Was it always SPLASH MOUNTAIN?
We know Walt Disney World was built in 1971, including many of the life-long classic rides, such as Splash mountain. But, did you know it was not originally called Splash Mountain? The ride is based on the Disney feature film Song of South, and so named Zip-a-Dee River Run (because of the song). It was not until the mid 1980's when newly appointed Disney CEO Michael Eisner that this changed. He wanted to include an animatronic of Daryl Hannah as the mermaid from the 1984 Disney hit Splash! When the Imagineers talked to him that it was not the way these attractions worked, as this would mean to mix 19th century creatures fro the Deep South and an eighties mermaid in on sole ride. Still he was not completely fulfilled by the name of Zip-a-Dee River Run, so he asked, if there was a Space Mountain, a Big Thunder Mountain and a Matterhorn Mountain, why not name it Splash Mountain. It remains today a perfect match for the ride.
Did you know: Walt had kids from all over the world bring a jar of water from their ocean/lake/other body of water, had them dress up in their attire and pour their jar of water into the water that travels you through It’s a Small World. Walt himself even poured some water himself.
