If I see one post after tomorrow bragging about not voting Harris because of some performative activism bullshit, I’m gonna snap.

there is so much to unpack about dinner scene but it comes down to two people finding themselves in unexpected pseudo-familial dynamic born out of grief and loneliness

sofia asks if she can help in cooking/changes plates and then be still for millisecond, almost bracing herself for harsh reaction because that how it was with carmine. but sal is not like her father. she doesn't have to walk on eggshells in case she makes him upset, she can actually relax a little bit and eat in peace.

and i love all the parallels and anti-parallels between these dinner scenes from 1x04 and 1x06 :

  • grand room vs kitchen
  • sal actually cooking the meal vs carmine getting the prepared food
  • soup (symbol of warmth/intimate dish) vs roasted hunted meat
  • carmine/sal both pour her wine (as in she's the big girl sitting at adults table)
  • carmine positioned at the head of the table vs sal choosing to sit next to her
  • sofia in proper dress/hair done vs nightgown/hair disheveled

all the food x sofia scenes post-arkham were a build up to this scene with sal so audience would see how she's more considerate to him -> actually mindful of his opinion about herself ; cause sofia was eating like time was running out, not caring what people would think about her and here she's makes herself to slow down and actually enjoy the meal like!!!!!!!!!!!!! so much to unpack!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This scene was really beautiful and I really appreciate this lovely breakdown of it. 🖤

I feel like with more time together, in a better world, they could have had a good criminal partnership. Even when Oz was doing his usual “try to turn my enemies against each other” shtick, trying to poke at Sal’s masculinity, he didn’t budge. He said “Once we take Sofia’s drugs to her,” making a point to show Oz he wasn’t like that.

> “mannish features”

> look inside

> literally just common physical traits among women of colour

you can’t separate transmisogyny from racism. the radical feminism movement is so overwhelmingly white because their idea of what a woman is is so thoroughly steeped in white supremacy.

Hard take but I think it’s better that Bojack did NOT die in The View from Halfway Down.

Him dying would go against the whole theme of having to live with your mistakes. Also it would’ve just been too depressing, especially for people who relate to Bojack’s struggles. What would him dying accomplish? What message would that send across? “Sad horse guy tries and fails to become a better person and to get better while struggling with mental illness, trauma, and addictions, then he finally starts making real progress and just dies.” That’s just depressing. And I know the show Bojack Horseman is kinda depressing, but there’s always an undercurrent of hope. Bojack dying would destroy that hope. Because yeah, Bojack did a lot of terrible things, but he always has the potential and the desire to get better. And maybe you hate him, that’s totally fair. Maybe you think he crossed the point of no return long ago. But the show says no, he actually can get better despite all the terrible things he’s done. And no, it doesn’t undo any of the terrible things he’s done or the pain he’s caused, but it does means he can at least stop hurting people so much, and maybe even help some people. And we do see him helping people and being a lot nicer in season 6, even though he still has a lot of flaws and ends up backsliding. He always has the potential to get better again, unless he dies.

What do you want Bojack to die for? His mistakes? The people he’s hurt? Because him dying wouldn’t undo any of the terrible things he’s done, and I don’t really think it would the people he’s hurt much peace either. In fact, considering a lot of the people he’s hurt have complicated feelings about him, I think him dying would actually give them less peace. Especially if they knew he died by suicide. Because while he’s alive they can cut him out of their lives, maybe tell themselves they hate him and that he’s a terrible person, and just be done with it. But if he dies, then there’s always these kind of thoughts like “is it still okay for me to still hate him? I may have hated him but I never wanted this. Was I too hard on him? Was there something I could’ve done better? Was I in the wrong for cutting him out? …why did it all have to go wrong?”

And yeah, it is possible that some people would get peace from his death. But probably not most of them. Especially not Hollyhock, who already knew about all the mental health struggles he had dealt with and already had a penchant for blaming herself.

And what of the people still actively in his life at that point? Todd, Princess Carolyn, Mr. Peanutbutter, and Diane. His death would’ve done nothing but hurt them, especially Diane. She was affected badly enough when she thought he might be dead but it turned out he actually wasn’t, imagine how badly she would’ve been affected if he’d stayed dead. I can’t think of any way his death wouldn’t helped anything or anyone.

In conclusion, Bojack staying alive in TVFHD was for the best, and his dying would’ve been bad for both the characters and the overall narrative of the show.

Things that happened in BoJack Horseman

  • A deep exploration of the 5 stages of grief through the stories of 3 people across time.
  • A realistic depiction of domestic violence, subtrance abuse, and how it all starts beautifully.
  • A story of a child Hollywoo star getting wrecked by life and fame which leads to an early death while also serving as a commentary of child celebrities and the way the industry can effect them.
  • A 50 almost taking advantege of a 17 year old and the long term effects on both of them.
  • A 20 minute monologue by the main character which is just a eulogy to his abusive mother (that got nominated for an Emmy).
  • A historically accurate story of a women from a luxurious family getting traumatized, and victimized by misogyny which leads her to a misrable life and becoming an abuser herself.
  • The full story of a couple getting married all the way to a divorce while unpacking why the marrige failed.

Also things that happened in BoJack Horseman

  • After many rewrites and changes, a movie ended up being a bimonthly curated box of snacks mid production.
  • Someone openned their own very unsafe DisneyLand, almost got sued but was saved because of a typo in the document copywriting DisneyLand.
  • An adult women dated 3 kids in a trench coat (which may or may not be a real adult).
  • A Hollywoo celebritie opened a store foor Halloween store for January with no floor, and Andrew Garfield fell down.
  • A character joined improv class that turned out to be a cult.
  • Character Actress Margo Martindale drive's another celebritie's bout straight to a ship full of spaggeti. Now the spagetti is cooking due to an ad that is actually a mirror, and because it's cooking, it's sinking straight to a city underwater. The Hot Sexy Killer Wale Uber and a celebritie who has just a bunch of spageti strainers laying around can stop it, but that person went to see a movie fir two hours.
  • A sex robot became a CEO of a company.
  • A Hollywoo celebritie challenged the governor of california to a ski race of which the winner will be the governor. His represent then does a bunch of legal gymnastics to make that happen. Said celebritie than admits to have no idea how to ski. In the end just some guy wins the race by accident and immediately resigns.
  • A house fell underground with celebrities in it so everyone kills and eats Zach Braff.

Popstar

I cannot explain how it does it so well but Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping always fucks me up, like all the flashbacks of them as kids, ESPECIALLY Owen and Lawrence getting Connor his turtle is so sweet. Even though its a mockumentary that's primarily a comedy its just so well written.

Hey guys, if you ever wanna make a loud conservative really upset when they start babbling about banning books for puritanical reasons, recite Ezekiel 23:20 to them. Act like “What a filthy passage, I don’t want my child reading such a nasty book!” They never know how to respond lmao

Oh in case you’re wondering, it’s “There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.”
