210 years ago on 28 January 1813, Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" was published.

HAND FLEX SCENE EXPLANATION:

So, during the Regency period, in high society, touching on bare skin was a big no. As you can see in the beginning of the scene, all the other ladies wearing the gloves. Thus, he performs such an intimate act by touching her hand.
