Of Wolves, Potions, and Goat Cheese - Chapter IV

Chapter IV - A Potion Girl in Castle Town

It had been a week since Hyrule Castle was set ablaze. For a couple days, the entirety of Castle Town was fraught with worry over their monarch. What had become of Princess Zelda? The castle was laid under siege mere days before her coronation was to take place! Just as suddenly, the world became engulfed in a perpetual, orange haze. Nobody could distinguish night from day, the only possible indicator being the clocks on the walls of their homes. Thankfully, those seemed to still be running. Attempts to leave Castle Town were swiftly thwarted by dark monsters, seemingly changed by the haze that shrouded all of Hyrule. For a week, it had been like this:

The people of Castle Town were trapped in the city’s stone walls, both resident and foreigner alike.

For the first three days, the entire city was in a panic. Hordes of people piled to stockpile on hot spring water, meat, and produce, fearing the thought of having to leave their homes in the next little while. Even the snobbiest, highest end shop in town received an inordinately high spike in business, as a result of the people’s reactionary purchasing. Most importantly of all, they practically raided the only potion shop in town, swiftly buying out all of the medicine that was in stock. Red potion, blue potion, and bandages were the biggest sellers during the frenzy.

By the end of the week, however, all seemed to move on from the initial shock of the invasion. In fact, after an announcement was passed down from Hyrule Castle, calling for an inordinately early curfew as a result of the invasion, business seemed to carry on as usual for the restless city.

All, that was, except for Fae Kelda.

Fae squinted as she opened the curtains to her bedroom window, heaving a heavy sigh at the sight before her.

Perpetual twilight, as usual.  

The redhead grumbled and slid the curtains shut, and her thin lips jutted out in a huff. Closing the curtains was the only way to mimic the dark of night these days, and it was the only way Fae could hope to get any shuteye. Rubbing the sleep out of her eyes, Fae shuffled out of her bedroom, clothing in hand, and into the one bathroom in her tiny home. She slumped over the sink and started the faucet as she grabbed her toothbrush, and she sighed once more at the sight of her reflection.

Her hair was horrifically short and choppy, still tousled from her tossing and turning in bed. Fae mumbled to herself as she started brushing her teeth. Why did she think shearing her long hair away was a good idea a week ago? Why was one person’s comment about it enough to set her off like that, to make her go to such an extreme so quickly? Fae doubted there was any way to salvage it, but it was still no excuse for her to not brush it out.  

She sipped some water and spit out the toothpaste, wasting no time in brushing out the horrifically short mess that was now her hair. It was an unnaturally bright red in a world of auburn, and it made the girl stick out like a sore thumb whenever she left her home. Thankfully, everyone was far too occupied with another, more pressing matter to notice her when she first left the house. For a few days, it was perfectly reasonable—Hyrule Castle was on fire, after all—while for the rest of the week, everyone was just... too busy going about their own business to care.

Fae supposed she should have been lucky, then. Her father scarcely left the house for the same reason; unnaturally red hair. Though, for him, it was much more likely to turn heads, given that he was over seven-feet-tall...

I finally finished my ref for Fae! She’s going to be a central character in my fic, and I really hope y’all like her 👉👈
