hufflepufflyme replied to your post “Gymnophoria + Malec?”

Beautiful~

thank you so much! Alec & Izzy are so pretty together

Right on! Hopefully they got your point. Loved the potluck comparison. Really simple to understand and 100% correct!

and thank you too, tho for entirely different reasons.

I like making sense and I’m not always very good at it outside of fiction *laughs*

I AM HERE FOR THIS

THEY ARE GREAT AREN’T THEY?

/When I played the game the first time, they wandered off as Grey Wardens together because honestly they’re both much happier that way, even tho for fic I thought it more realistic they’d get caught up in their responsibilities and duties instead. At least for awhile.

I'd be partial to Grey Warden Alec too, because the templars are just one branch of the Chantry, and then you'd have to figure out how the rest of the Chantry fits into it - Shadowhunters are a hidden organisation fighting a force that's kind of absolutely evil (demons), so the darkspawn also seem like an apt opponent.

Yeah, and they use that fighting absolute evil as an excuse for all sorts of sins... plus they’re almost always willing to give their own a second chance. (You even make more with a chalice/potion/ritual that might kill you instead of converting you!)

It’s a good comparison

I see Bioware&Shadowhunters talk, I immediately follow. Just saying. Because I've been thinking about a story involving a First Enchanter Magnus and a newly appointed Knight Commander Alexander for a while now, but never got to writing anything down.

OH MY GOODNESS YOU HAVE GOOD TIMING

I prefer the Grey Warden Alec because the sacrificial impulses balanced by morally questionable actions fits Nephilim so well, but the Chantry and the Clave bear more than a passing resemblance to each other, so I can see the appeal. (The power dynamic can be hard to navigate though, which again would fit the original setting to a point.)

OH, Grey Wardens to replace the Werewolves maybe? So Luke could still be a former Templar who is now a Warden and you’d get all that interesting dual-perspective going on. And Valentine is obviously a power hungry Templar then. That does work.

Seelies as the Original Elves? Immortal, weird magic, interdimensional travel?

(Does that make vampires into demons? I feel like I’ve just made vampires into demons/fade spirits. oops. sorry Raphael & Simon.)

Your favourite non-canon ship, for the ask meme?

Avatar

hmm. I’ve answered for Mass Effect and Doctor Who already?

I’d like to say, for all that the marriage is potentially canon, a relationship for Alistiar/Anora is not, and I really enjoy the non-canonical assumption that they became a proper power!couple over the years, because they have very complementary strengths/weakness.

(Alternatively, I have a lot of feels about polyamorous Blackwall and his relationships with both Solas and Loghain but that’s really specific to my own unwritten world!state so it’s hard to flail about them with people.)

Thank You!

So on this, my 20,000th post, I just wanted to take a moment to thank all the people who have been so kind and giving here on tumblr, with this, a slight retrospective of the gifts I have received (or art I have been blamed for?) for my OTP, Sebastian Vael and Adelaide Hawke.

(Not that all of you haven’t been wonderfully helpful and inspiring in other ways, filled commissions and written me fic and rec’ed music and beta’d writing and fangirled and ETC. ... but it’s hard to make a nice clean commemorative photopost for that.)

So, in order, my sincerest gratitude to @rosewaterhag, (who got me on tumblr to begin with), @atomicpen, @forgefaerie, @cheesiestart, @syllogi, @at-firstblush, @akuracain, cheesiestart again!, and @whyswhoswhats and her amazing headmorphing skills, even if I have hit the tumblr mention glitch with her name. <3

And a continuing thank you to all past, present, and future followers and followed, people who have encouraged and (metaphorically) held my hand and given ALL the e-hugs. (And the occasional physical one, though never nearly enough of those.) I love you. Y’all are amazing, and I don’t know that I would have made it this far without your support.

so I sort of implied (if not outright promised) a Blackwall meta post today

but I’m not entirely sure what I want to say anymore

I just wish, honestly, I’d managed to write more of the fic I had planned for him and Erana, because then I’d have something to build off of here. (The bits I keep working on are even more out of order than things I usually do, tho, and it’s hard to figure out how to finish them up, because do they work without the stuff I haven’t written yet that’s supposed to happen before them? Or don’t they? I can’t tell, because I have some idea of what the missing bits /are/ after all.)

Erana is never angry regarding Revelations. (She is so angry at the entire rest of the world she doesn’t have anything left for Blackwall?) Because, as she tells him by quoting the Vir Bor-Assan at him (bend, but do not break) everyone has stumbled beneath a weight that was too much to bear (except maybe Cassandra, Erana is entirely unsure that Cassandra has any idea how to bend) has done things they regret in order to withstand the pressure. And I feel like it’s an important story to have, for Blackwall, to contrast with all the people who /do/ feel personally betrayed by what he does and did. (And I totally get why most people would, it’s just ... not what Erana did. And really, he’s a terrible liar, so it’s not like he was good at betraying the people he cared about. Which is oddly endearing, right? That’s not just me?)

Clearly the way I figure out characters is relational, just like the way I discuss and meta is reactionary. (honestly that’s how I fic too, it’s something I need to work on.)

SORT OF unrelated, but all in a piece in regards the not writing, gosh I wish I could manage to write more Loghain and Blackwall because Loghain is one of the few other people with a reputation and history as heavy, or heavy enough to know what it feels like, anyways.

(Have I mentioned he’s in the DAI epilogue in my head? Maybe I should just give up on the long-fic in my head and write a bunch of ficlets and see if they eventually tie together? That’s kind of what happened with Adelaide/Sebastian after all.)

Anyways. Blackwall is the person who least thinks Thom deserves a second chance, but he’s stubborn enough he keeps working for it anyways, can’t bear the thought that it could all end now, (for every possible instance of now) when he still needs time to keep trying to help someone, anyone, everyone, needs to keep turning other people’s lives around before they end up anything like he was. (And I am basically a sucker, apparently, for anyone whose interpersonal conflicts are actually all internal conflicts other people happen to get in the way of. If that makes sense.)

Also, it’s gratifying to see someone who does keep going, even when he isn’t entirely sure why. He keeps showing up, hoping to find an answer. That’s a good end line to have, a good goal for a type of person to be.

The nature of the Veil

I never post meta because I prefer to write it out, but Wikipedia has some really great animations of the harmonic series.  I saw it and thought… what if this is how the Veil works?  What if the Veil is the dissonance that disrupts the consonant, harmonic nature between the real world and the Fade?

Fundamental

First overtone

Second overtone

Third overtone

There are waveform animations over at Wiki, but this presents a few ideas to me regarding partial breaches of the Veil/thinning of the Veil.  I’m not going to go much farther than this conceptualization because I don’t think truly this is how magic works in Thedas, but when the Inquisitor says, “The Veil is more like a vibration,” this is what I think about.

that moment when you ask patrick weekes about this and he replies with “spoilers”

That is brilliant.  What if THIS is the Chant?

If you overlap them as well they can become constructive or destructive.

Yes… I started thinking about the Veil being an anti-soundwave which creates a dead space between the Fade and the real world, and then my brain went off on the music of the spheres and vibrations and M theory and dimensions and um… This doesn’t explain how mages open the Veil and pull from the Fade, or why blood magic thins the Veil, but it’s an interesting concept and what if those circles around Solas in his tarot card are soundwaves?

That’s such an interesting theory! And maybe the destruction would be destructive interference? Or maybe constructive with the harmonics. That would be such an interesting take on the science of magic then? The ability to channel energy or sound waves. Hell the rift mage path would make a lot of sense then. (kinda like biotics in ME with dark energy?)

Force magic would make sense that way!  I love force magic.  Could you explain more about how this would explain rift magic?

Off topic a bit… Doesn’t the name Corypheus mean composer/ conductor ?Bioware’s just toying with us now.

Adelaide Hawke

Adelaide is motivated by conflicting desires when it comes to how she presents herself: a lifetime of camouflage, of blending into the background on purpose, of necessity, of wanting to be safe and keep her family safe, contrasted with a deep and abiding love of rich colors and textures and knowing she could show off, just a little and would probably be completely capable of pulling it off? There’s just a hint of self-doubt there, because of course she never has actually let herself do that. Instead she has leathers and basic raw blouses and trousers and practical boots and is both entranced by and terrified of the way her options change once they’re in Hightown, and especially once she’s Champion, and no longer has to hide, no longer can at all.

But that doesn’t mean she’s safe either. So she tends towards long trousers still, split or short skirts she can run in, long sleeves and sturdy fabric with fancy embroidery. (And if her heels are too high to run in, you can be damn sure they’re easy enough to slip off that she can stab you with them. Not that a mage needs a back up weapon very often, but it’s better safe than sorry.)

But when she does indulge? She goes all out.

In modern terms, she’d have been the first person to buy black pumps with bright red soles, suits with bright patterned interiors but very respectable cuts, and/or the cool grey jacket with a jewel-tone shell beneath it. She likes tweed, and suede, and raw silk. Mostly relatively basic separates she could mix and match. Plus the occasional splurge on very fancy shoes to balance out the rest of the mostly practical sneakers and ankle boots and low-heeled pumps. Modern Adelaide would mostly be adorable, rather than armored.

Theia Hawke

Theia adores soft fabrics, pastel colors, dresses and drapes and robes and shawls but sometimes the bodice is surprisingly low cut, or tighter than the usual style, or there’s an edge of steel hiding somewhere on the edges. (Frequently literally.) She likes to make sure she is clearly feminine, and sexual, but frequently projects an entirely false image of innocence in order to make sure that even the people who know better are likely to underestimate her.

Like, lilyxandra’s rose gown is maybe a little too on the nose, so to speak, and would need a slightly different cut to accentuate Theia’s larger size, but it does pretty much scream Theia whenever I see it.

But she is perfectly well aware of how to change her fashion to suit her circumstances and goals, and the almost violent use of it to surprise and manipulate people is something that eases, a bit, once she’s Inquisitor.

That said, one of her favorite games (even when she’s generally less prone to power plays) is meeting unexpected visitors/messengers in basically her nightgown or a flimsy robe and looking at them through bashfully lowered eyelashes, because they’re usually so busy stuttering apologies they tend to tell her more than they are supposed to about whatever brought them to her door. (Alternatively the particularly obnoxious self-important ones are so clearly either ogling her or feeling superior she can get more out of them than they mean to let slip and she can then blacklist them from ever coming to the Inquisition again. She really enjoys being powerful.)

Erana Lavellan

Erana’s main goal, once she realizes she’s going to have to present herself to shem all the time, once she’s accepted the responsibility of Inquisitor, is mostly to make sure they never forget that she’s Dalish, and that they chose her to lead them despite it, and that she and her Inquisition are strong in ways they dare not ignore.

So she wears the Inquisition’s sigil, though she hates the echo of Chantry oppression that it represents. She wears bright colors and bold patterns, high-cut coats and long trousers to emphasize her height, the length of her arms and legs, her face. Never a mask or a hat to shadow her vallaslin. Basically she is on a continuous quest to be as un-Orlesian as possible and make them like it.

When she’s not being Inquisitor, she does indulge, just a little, in the fact that she can have clothing that doesn’t have to stand up to travel and fighting and camping and weather. She likes green.
