so I was considering trying to volunteer with a local practical support network but they, completely understandably, want a character reference that you're yk, not likely to be a narc or whatever, and I am faced with the realization that I have lost touch with just about everyone I have ever been friends with in my entire life and I have no idea who to put in?

but also that explains my shitty mental health the past several years, I have a social network of half-a-dozen people I'm related to and a scattering of internet friends who don't live anywhere near me

which is a little depressing

but the husband is taking me out to see venom, so that'll be fun 😅

Can we talk about how in zombie shows/movies/books they always find a veterinarian and not a surgeon? Are veterinarians deemed more likely to survive the apocalypse?

Yup.

  • One of our professional skills is ‘not being bitten by patients’
  • We actually have a good broad knowledge base for both surgical, medical, and GP things
  • We’re used to improvising equipment because a lot of stuff is just not made for animals
  • Meat safety is part of our training
  • Our cars are often full of equipment, especially in mixed practice
  • We probably weren’t in the human hospital at the initial outbreak

a lot of really annoying media discourse on tumblr comes down to people having a hard time accepting that both of the following are true at the same time:

  1. for any work of fiction interesting enough to be worth talking about, there will be multiple equally plausible and valid interpretations that are possible - and by interpretations here i don't just mean headcanons about minor details, i mean how you read the core themes and character arcs. and very often some of those equally valid interpretations will directly contradict each other and that's ok
  2. not EVERY interpretation is valid, some are genuinely just dumb as hell and unsupported by the text

Ignoring the joke (sorry), that IS a curious one because! Any of the compound words mentioned above would, if switched from exocentric to reg compound, have the boring-ass -er ending and the noun positions would trade places, right? I.e. thriftspender, pocketpicker etc. The meaning remains the same.

So fuckface would turn into Facefucker. Buuuut. That changes the meaning entirely! It implies that the target… let’s call him Wulfric, is a fucker of faces. However og Fuckface means Wulfric’s face is the face in need of a thorough fucking, and definitely on the receiving end. Poor (lucky?) Wulfric. So would that still make it a true exocentric compound noun? Since it doesn’t keep its meaning? SO FASCINATING!!!

As an aside, the German word for Fuckface is Backpfeifengesicht, meaning a face in need of a slapping. While less severe, it’s endlessly more delightful and pleasing to say.
