note to myself OUT LOUD:  DO NOT BE AFRAID TO WRITE LIKE YOU HAVE NOT WRITTEN BEFORE. LEAVE IT BEHIND. DO NOT RUSH. ONLY PULL WRITING FROM THE SOUL. FORGET YOUR OLD SELVES. ISN’T THAT WHAT THIS NEXT THING IS ALL ABOUT? WHAT FEELS ROTTEN TO WRITE, TOSS. IF YOU DO NOT NEED TO SAY IT, DON’T SAY IT. FIND YOUR TRUTHS. CHALLENGE YOURSELF. LISTEN TO LIFE. RESPOND TO LIFE. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED? GET. BACK. TO. YOUR. SOUL.

“Writing is writing what you cannot know before you have written: it is preknowing and not knowing, blindly, with words. It occurs at the point where blindness and light meet.”

Hélène Cixous, from Three Steps on the Ladder of Writing.

what do you mean by “the idea that prose exists is bad writing advice”?

One of the biggest revelations of my writing career was reading the Italian surrealists of the 1970s.

It showed me just how much you can DO with language. Specifically Calvino's "If on a winters night a traveller" has this gorgeous way of flowing in and out of prose and verse until the line is completely blurred. A huge part of Calvino's work is him showing the audience how there really is no line between the two.

I'm of the opinion that what we think of as "Prose" is really just a very specific poetic structure. The definition of prose itself is "writing without metrical structure" but that's just not true! You literally cannot avoid metrical structure! Grammar and punctuation are both ways of organizing metrical structure! It's just more complicated than "only five syllables per line".

The idea of prose implies that there is some sort of line between prose and poetry, but there really isn't, and I feel like the structure we impose on writing can be limiting.

this should be a tweet but I don’t want to deal with people on Twitter. everyone stop having every character in your fiction talk like their goal is to get an A in therapy.

I love cathartic conversations too and that is why I am begging you: stop hunting them to extinction by making them constant, characterless, and corny as hell

YES

Here is what you do:

1. Find the thing the character wants to say, their deepest and most fundamental truth.

2. Congratulations! That’s the one thing they cannot, under any circumstances, say. Imagine they’re under a fairy curse if you have to.

3. But they want to. They want to so bad. So it’s going to bleed into everything they do say, everything they do. What would you do for someone if you couldn’t say you loved them? That you hated them? That you love them but the things they do remind you of their father?
