Your 20s are as a confusing time as your teenage years, because you have this realisation of new responsibilities and adulthood but you still feel like you’re a child, and you keep on looking at adults to tell you if you’re doing something wrong except you yourself are an adult now, and you keep second guessing yourself through things with faked confidence while also having a nervous meltdown inside, and it feels so freeing but scary at the same time, kinda like the first time you cross the road by yourself.
SPOILERS FOR THE FOLK OF AIR SERIES
Note: This is in no way discriminating against any other fae books.
So my favourite fae book/books will probably always be The Folk Of Air Series. First of all I love how our mc Jude stays human till the end of the series. Although she admits it’s a weakness for her it is also a strength; Jude knows she can not live in the human realm anymore however she loves the magic and admires the fae, however never once does she hate the fact that she’s human. She thrives on being human, using her skills ,her brains to navigate the world of the fae. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing but so many series have the mc becoming a mythical creature, so seeing Jude reman human was a breathe of fresh air for me.
The fae: Holly Black makes the fae in her stories be like the ones we heard about in bedtimes stories when we were children. They have horns, tails, fangs and claws and different coloured skin and it’s just so beautiful to read; she doesn’t make the fae these “perfect” human beings. She makes them beautiful in her own way, and kinda shows that beauty literally comes in all sizes shapes and colours.
Morally grey characters. All of the characters have this, they don’t give give reasons for the things they do; if they do something bad then it’s bad . That’s it. No justifications, nothing. Lying, stealing and backstabbing is a common theme throughout the series but guess what? That’s exactly how the real world works as well. Yes Cardan and his gang was horrible, I actually hated him in the first book. But that’s also what makes us like him so much. Because he admits to being horrible, because that is WHO HE IS. A lot of his childhood shaped him to be who he is but the thing is the fae we’re brought up to be exactly like that. Jude isnt the perfect heroine either . She has a hard time trusting people ( I can understand why), she’s rash and young, and will not hesitate to murder you ( literally ).
So yeah I flipping love this series so much to the point I’ve re read it so many times.
