“Lightwoods. They always have to have the last word.”

“I did not make a pie,” Alec repeated, gesturing expressively with one hand, “for three reasons. One, because I do not have any pie ingredients. Two, because I don’t actually know how to make a pie.”
He paused, clearly waiting.
Removing his sword and leaning it against the cave wall, Jace said warily, “And three?”
“Because I am not your bitch,” Alec said.

“It’s not like it’s one big bad thing. It’s a lot of little invisible things. When Magnus and I were traveling, and I’d call from the road, Dad never asked how he was. When I get up to talk in Clave meetings, no one listens, and I don’t know if that’s because I’m young or if it’s because of something else. I saw Mom talking to a friend about her grandchildren and the second I walked into the room they shut up. Irina Cartwright told me it was a pity no one would ever inherit my blue eyes now. It’s not like a stab wound you can protect me from. It’s a million little paper cuts every day.”

The law is hard but it is the law, and I respect that. But I’ve realized that i have to listen to my heart.
Hey, I know the tmi book fandom has mixed feeling about book!Alec (he could be a bit of an asshole), but let’s forget that for a moment and relive some of these legendary quotes:
Preach:
What a savage:
1st part: deep and important
2nd part: sass
well
see? savage
same alec. same
i don’t even have an observation this just made me laugh
adorable
and of course
i saved the best for last
“Malec should break up. It would be a good way to show how they were in the books.” What toxic, childish and terrible rep for lgbt+ couples? Sure.
How they were in the books?
You mean that somehow a 400 yo had not developed the ability to talk to his partners in a normal or healthy way?
You mean that Alec immediately started accusing Magnus of sleeping with too many people when he learned he was bi?
You mean that Magnus had the same approach to relationships as a 20 yo white American, when he is in fact a 400 yo Indonesian?
You mean that instead of talking, Malec were either shown fighting, or shown snogging (in extras)? Other interactions include on-page biphobia and homophobia mentions.
You mean that the reason why Alec took Magnus back after all of it was because he thought his life would not be interesting with another person?
Is that what you mean by…….
“how they were in the books”????
👏👏👏👏

I’m currently going through City of Bones for my paper again and I just realized that Alec’s experience in this book is literally:
“… but Jace ignored him.”
“Simon ignored him.”
“… but Clary ignored him.”
He gets kicked, insulted, yelled at, dragged out of bed two times and almost killed in the end.
City of Bones did not have a lot of good days for Alec Lightwood.
“alec reached down and took magnus’s hands. magnus let alec pull him to his feet, a questioning look in his eyes. before he could say anything, alec drew him closer and kissed him. magnus made a soft, pleased sound, and gripped the back of alec’s shirt, rucking it up, his fingers cool on alec’s spine. alec leaned into him, pinning magnus between the table and his own body. not that magnus seemed to mind. ‘come on,’ alec said against magnus’s ear. 'it’s late. let’s go to bed.”
I’m so glad Alec has a personality in Shadowhunters. I spent the first five books searching for his personality, glad I found it
Yeah, the streets rose in two perfect waves in the night Crashes on my left and one on my right It’s all fire and brimstone baby, so let’s go outside.
How are Jace and Alec still even bonded after they’ve been separated twice in the books? With Jace dying then coming back and then a crazed lunatic having Jace under his spell. Poor Alec felt losing his Parabatai twice and we never really get to witness his reaction first hand when it happens. I hope they will in the show, Parabatai bonds are so freaking strong lol.
Yeah, apparently being dead for “only a few minutes” doesn’t count and since Alec was in the heat of a battle in that moment, he felt “something” but he just dismissed it. He simply dismissed his fucking parabatai bond beginning to break? Just like that? He didn’t even know Jace was dead? Jace had to TELL him? Oh yeah, their bond is “normal” and not “speciul!!1!!111!” like Jem and Will’s, so why the FUCK not, right?
What the EVERFUCKING FUCK, CC! Pardon my French but this is such a shitty piece of terrible writing!
And yeah, Jace being consumed by the heavenly fire? Yup, no effect either, pft! By that point I wasn’t even surprised anymore. Dear God, this makes me still furious!
tbh honest Alec is so badly written in those books - and I don’t mean badly as “he is a bad/boring character” but as “the author never gave much thought or really developed him the way he should have been”, especially considering he was “supposed” to be Jace parabatai, but this has in fact no impact in the books nor is it even clearly visible at any point?
Yeah, but Jace was SPECIUL, didn’t you know? His SPECIULNESS made the bond superfluous because nothing could stand up to his GOLDEN ANGELIC SPECIULNESS!!!11!1!!! And Alec was TEH GHAY and that was enough, and when he couldn’t be TEH GHAY, he was useless, because his character was all about TEH GHAYNESS!!!11!1!!!
Seriously, the parabatai bond and Malec are the perfect examples of fandom picking up something and running with it DESPITE the author’s best efforts to squash it.
omg you made me laugh so much - especially when it’s sadly enough pretty much the level of character development we get in the actual books for both of them haha
