Teach children that this is not ok

Teach children that there’s nothing wrong with this

I’m really not understanding why you think cultural appropriation would be ok, unless you are assuming that the girl in the picture is part Japanese.

Yellow face yet she’s using white makeup in the traditional style but okay.

Cultural appropriation isn’t a thing, hon. ☺️ Cultures should be shared by all means.

I disagree. The makeup is clearly reflective of traditional Geisha makeup which is yellowface and therefore racist. Furthermore, the girl is wearing a kimono, a garment that has for ages carried cultural significance. Assuming that she is white how can you think this is ok? And cultural appropriation isn’t a thing? What rock do you live under? I suggest you educate yourself on the differences between cultural appreciation and cultural appropriation.

I am japanese, in japan at this very moment. The only people who think culture shouldnt be shared are racists like you.

A vast majority of Japanese people actually enjoy other people making an effort to spread and enjoy japanese culture, and encourage it. Many make businesses in deliberately taking pictures of people in kimono. A common omiage (gift) for foreigners from japanese people is traditional japanese things such as kimonos, tea seats, shisa dog statues, ect.

And to top it off, basically 80 percent of japanese customs, traditions, and food, came from other countries. Japanese is an integration of different cultures, like america. Japan takes influences from places like korea, china, russia, and europe. If japan stuck to itself, there would be no tempura, japanese tea, tea ceremonies, kabuki, japanese bread, japanese curry, j- pop, anime, cars, or modern fishing techniques. The picture is not “yellow face” they are not making fun of asians. In fact, it looks like they put extra care and research into their work.

The only reason that you have a problem with this is because that little girl is white and you know that it is acceptable on tumblr to crap all over white people. The only racist here is you.

no offense but this is literally the most neurotypical thing i have ever seen

Uhhhh… no. This is what they teach you in therapy to deal with BPD and general depression. When I got out of the hospital after hurting myself a second time, I got put into intensive outpatient program for people being released from mental hospitals as a way to monitor and help transition them into getting them efficient long-term care. This is something they stressed, especially for people with general depression. When you want to stay at home and hide in your bed, forcing yourself to do the opposite is what is helpful. For me, who struggles with self harm- “I want to really slice my arm up. The opposite would be to put lotion on my skin (or whatever would be better, like drawing on my skin) the opposite is the better decision.” It doesn’t always work because of course mental health isn’t that easy, but this is part of what’s called mindfulness (they say this all the time in therapy)

Being mindful of these is what puts you on the path to recovery. If you’re mindful, you are able to live in that moment and try your best to remember these better options.

I swear to god, I don’t get why some people on this website straight up reject good recovery help like this because either they a)have never been in therapy so don’t understand in context how to use these coping tactics. Or b)want to insist that all therapists and psych doctors are neurotypical and have zero idea what they are talking about. (Just so ya know, they teach this in DBT, the therapy used to help BPD. The psychologist who came up with DBT actually had BPD, so….a neurotypical women didn’t come up with this.)

I have clinical OCD and for me, exposure therapy–a version of “do the opposite”–has been fundamental. I’ve had huge improvement in the last year, but I’m 100% clear that if I hadn’t done my best to follow this protocol I’d be fucked. I have a lot of empathy for that moment when you’re just too tired to fight and you check the stove or you wash your hands or go back to the office at midnight to make sure the door is locked. But the kind of therapeutic approach outlined above has been crucial for me.

It’s hard to do. I’ve weathered panic attacks trying to follow this protocol. But I’ve gotten remarkable results. I was afraid to touch the surfaces in my house, okay? I was afraid to touch my own feet, afraid to touch my parrot–deliberately exposing myself to “contamination” has helped me heal. I can’t speak for people with other issues, but this has helped my anxiety and OCD.

I feel that tumblr, in an effort to be accepting of mental illness, has become anti-recovery. Having a mental illness does not make you a bad person. There is nothing morally wrong with having a mental illness anymore than more than there’s something morally wrong with having the flu. However, if you’re “ill” physically or mentally, something is wrong in the sense that you are unwell and to alleviate that you should try to get better. While there is not “cure” for mental illness, there are ways to get better.

There was a post on tumblr where someone with ADHD posted about how much you can get done when you focus and was attacked for posting about being “nuerotypical” - when she was posting about the relief she got from being on an medication to treat her illness.

I saw another post going around tumblr that said something along the line of “you control your thoughts, why not choose to have happy thoughts” which again was shot down as “nuerotypical” but while you don’t have control over what thoughts come into your mind, you absolutely can and should choose to have happy thoughts. In DBT we call this “positive self talk”.

I’m in DBT to help treat PTSD stemming from child abuse. The abuse and abandonment I experienced destroyed my self esteem and created a lot of anxiety over upsetting other people. DBT has taught me to recognize when my thoughts are distorting realty ‘no one likes you’ and answer back ‘plenty of people like you, you don’t need everyone to like you, especially if the relationship doesn’t make you happy’, to respond to the thought ‘I’m so worthless’ with ‘you’re really great and have accomplished something’

And it’s not easy to challenge your thoughts, it’s a skill that’s learned and it’s hard to force yourself to think something that doesn’t seem authentic or even seems wrong to think - it’s hard to be encouraging towards yourself when you hate yourself - but you force yourself to be aware of your thoughts and push back when you fall into unhealthy patterns

That isn’t “so neurotypical” that’s recovery.

Not shaming mental illness doesn’t mean shaming RECOVERY.

Pro-Recovery isn’t anti-disability.

Do not shame healthy behaviors as “neurotypical”.

Learning healthy behaviors and taking steps to treat mental illness and disorders including taking medication if that’s what works for you is important. You shouldn’t be ashamed if you have mental illness, but you shouldn’t say ‘well I’m not neurotypical therefor I can’t do anything to get better’ - while there is no cure for mental illness, there is a lot you can do to get better, to function better, to manage your mental illness and be safer, happier, and healthier for it.

lmao okay so I have “neurotypical” blacklisted (because I can’t. I literally can’t do it. You people are so fucking aggressive about healthy people and it disgusts me.) But I saw this for an instant and my heart just sang. Mental illness sucks. Trust me. I know. It also sucks when you try to discuss it with people who don’t understand. Believe me, I know how that feels, too. But unfortunately, being a person has requirements. Things you’re not going to want to do. Some days it’s going to be Too Hard. I understand that. But I’ve done it, the whole “It’s Too Hard” thing. For almost an entire year, I barely left my bed, let alone my house. I dropped out of school and didn’t have a job and mooched off my savings until I had to move back home. That is NOT okay. It’s NOT healthy, it’s NOT safe and it’s NOT something that should be played off as “just little ~*~neuroatypical~*~ things”. If you have the urge to live this way, fucking seek help. Being mentally ill should be more widely understood. I agree. But it’s not something quirky to live with. It’s a fucking nightmare. Get help. Take meds. Ignore the little voice saying otherwise. Mental illness is not something to just learn to live with. You have to develop coping mechanisms and move on with your life. Yeah it’s fucking hard. Yeah, some days you’re gonna feel like you deserve a medal for doing your laundry and no one’s gonna understand it. It sucks. It’s not fun. But do your fucking laundry.

I’ve learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone who can be loved. The rest is up to them. I’ve learned that no matter how much I care, some people just don’t care back. I’ve learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it. I’ve learned that it’s not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life that counts. I’ve learned that you can get by on charm for about 15 minutes. After that, you’d better know something. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t compare yourself to the best others can do, but to the best you can do. I’ve learned that it’s not what happens to people that’s important. It’s what they do about it. I’ve learned that no matter how thin you slice it, there are always two sides. I’ve learned that it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be. I’ve learned that it’s a lot easier to react than it is to think. I’ve learned that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them. I’ve learned that you can keep going long after you think you can’t. I’ve learned that we are responsible for what we do, no matter how we feel. I’ve learned that either you control your attitude or it controls you. I’ve learned that regardless of how hot and steamy a relationship is at first, the passion fades and there had better be something else to take its place. (Amen to that!) I’ve learned that heroes are the people who do what has to be done when it needs to be done, regardless of the consequences. I’ve learned that learning to forgive takes practice. I’ve learned that there are people who love you dearly, but just don’t know how to show it. I’ve learned that money is a lousy way of keeping score. I’ve learned that my best friend and I can do anything or nothing and have the best time. I’ve learned that sometimes the people you expect to kick you when you’re down will be the ones to help you get back up. I’ve learned that I’m getting more and more like my grandma, and I’m kinda happy about it. I’ve learned that sometimes when I’m angry I have the right to be angry, but that doesn’t give me the right to be cruel. I’ve learned that true friendship continues to grow, even over the longest distance. Same goes for true love. I’ve learned that just because someone doesn’t love you the way you want them to doesn’t mean they don’t love you with all they have. I’ve learned that maturity has more to do with what types of experiences you’ve had and what you’ve learned from them and less to do with how many birthdays you’ve celebrated. I’ve learned that you should never tell a child her dreams are unlikely or outlandish. Few things are more humiliating, and what a tragedy it would be if she believed it I’ve learned that your family won’t always be there for you. It may seem funny, but people you aren’t related to can take care of you and love you and teach you to trust people again. Families aren’t biological. I’ve learned that no matter how good a friend someone is, they’re going to hurt you every once in a while and you must forgive them for that. I’ve learned that it isn’t always enough to be forgiven by others. Sometimes you have to learn to forgive yourself. I’ve learned that no matter how bad your heart is broken the world doesn’t stop for your grief. I’ve learned that our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but we are responsible for who we become. I’ve learned that sometimes when my friends fight, I’m forced to choose sides even when I don’t want to. I’ve learned that just because two people argue, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. And just because they don’t argue, it doesn’t mean they do. I’ve learned that sometimes you have to put the individual ahead of their actions. I’ve learned that we don’t have to change friends if we understand that friends change. I’ve learned that if you don’t want to forget something, stick it in your underwear drawer. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t be so eager to find out a secret. It could change your life forever. I’ve learned that the clothes I like best are the ones with the most holes in them. I’ve learned that two people can look at the exact same thing and see something totally different. I’ve learned that no matter how you try to protect your children, they will eventually get hurt and you will hurt in the process. I’ve learned that there are many ways of falling and staying in love. I’ve learned that no matter the consequences, those who are honest with themselves, get farther in life. I’ve learned that many things can be powered by the mind, the trick is self-control. I’ve learned that no matter how many friends you have, if you are their pillar, you will feel lonely and lost at the times you need them most. I’ve learned that your life can be changed in a matter of hours by people who don’t even know you. I’ve learned that even when you think you have no more to give, when a friend cries out to you, you will find the strength to help. I’ve learned that writing, as well as talking, can ease emotional pains. I’ve learned that the paradigm we live in is not all that is offered to us. I’ve learned that credentials on the wall do not make you a decent human being. I’ve learned that the people you care most about in life are taken from you too soon. I’ve learned that although the word “love” can have many different meaning, it loses value when overly used. I’ve learned that it’s hard to determine where to draw the line between being nice and not hurting people’s feelings and standing up for what you believe.

what happens when i can’t sleep..

you. listen to me. this is it okay? it’s over.

it’s time to walk away. it’s time to be alone.

you are going to be alone. and you are going to feel it scrapping your insides and its going to make you cringe and you are going to hate it, you are going to be bad at it. you will try to find refuge under the skin of others, you will use them as umbrellas to avoid getting soaked in the storm. i am not telling you to dance in the rain. i know how unrealistic that sounds. sit in it though. let it take over you, and then watch it go away. experience it. understand that it goes away.

it always goes away.

you are going to be furious. you are going to throw things, break them, and then for a second you might feel better. and then you are going to be sad. you will cry. it’s okay. cry. cry because he used to call you wiffey and you believed him. cry because he told you he loved you. cry because you wanted him so bad. it’s okay to admit this. cry because he held you and squeezed you and fell asleep on you and cry because he took this all away with the first fuck you. cry because he hurt you and the people you love and because he listened to his ego more than to your heart. cry because he let you down. because he cared about being dominant more than loving you. because he made you feel like a worthless penny when you would have done anything for him. cry. cry some more. but don’t cry because it’s over. people don’t change. stop giving chances. people who hammer bitter sentences and insulting words on the walls beneath your skin, don’t deserve love. don’t cry over someone who has the least respect for you. someone who uses your body like a walk-in-closet and confesses his love only in privacy. you are not a secret.

you are a fucking masterpiece.

you deserve someone who not only sees this, but wants to show it to the world. it’s over. you can smile now.

listen to me. i know you feel different now. though don’t let this change you. he isn’t worth it. not one bit. no one who chooses to hurt you over and over again, is worth it. it’s okay to miss him. but realize it’s not him you miss but the idea of him: what you thought he was. forgive yourself for putting him above everything and everyone when he never even fought for you. forgive yourself for chasing someone who found amusement in being chased and took you for granted. forgive yourself for convincing your heart that he was the one.

understand this: people that are unstable and lost and unaware of who they are, are incapable of loving. his claims don’t make a reality. he never loved you.

understand this: everything he said about you was a projection of what he felt about himself.

listen.

whatever happens next, i know what you are capable of. don’t be a warrior. don’t fight. don’t battle the demons, don’t walk around with your arms and fists up. don’t turn hard. I’m not asking you for a promise, i am giving you an order: heal yourself. you have to. you can’t let this turn you into a monster. heal yourself and come out stronger and brighter and wiser. and don’t look back.

once you realize your worth, you will realize there isn’t anything to look back on anyways.

listen to me.

this is it okay? you are free.

Reminder: You are under no obligation to look pretty.

Not when you are laying around the house, not when you go to the grocery store, not when you sit in a classroom, not when you go to the gym. You are never obligated to get dressed up just so you are pretty for others.

Pretty is not the rent you pay to exist in the world as a woman.

That last line. Wow.

so fundamental that it bears repeating

I wish people would stop saying “It’s July. Well done for wasting half a year.” Did you make someone smile in the past six months? Did you stroke a cat or throw a stick for a dog? Did you learn a new fact or teach someone a new joke? Did you laugh, cry, scream or sing in the past six months? Because if so, congratulations for not wasting your time at all.

i hate when people are like “only dogs can give u love and affection cats are cold and elusive” like okay dog person if you had ever actually owned a cat you would know they are the neediest fucking creatures on the planet

cats will literally sit on your head until you pay attention to them

Avatar
mammacarnage

That proves the point, they want attention, they want you to pay attention to them not them!

cats show affection and love in their own way

for example

  • actually holding eye contact with you and blinking slowly is how cats ‘kiss’
  • cats choose to sleep or sit next to you even if you’re busy when they have a million other places to be because they like your company
  • they consider positive attention love
  • when they ‘headbutt’ you it’s called ‘bunting’ and it’s how they show affection
  • when they knead you it’s because they feel comforted
  • they think of you petting them as grooming- it makes them feel good so they will ask for you to pet them (or demand) especially if they’re feeling sad
  • cats like to step on you because they mark you with their scent from their little feet telling other cats BACK THE FUCK OFF THIS HUMAN IS MINE
  • cats will lick you or groom you because they want you to be clean and happy
  • they bring you dead things because they don’t want you to starve

cats think of humans as parents whereas dogs think of humans as the alpha dog

;w;

People have to realize that cats and dogs aren’t the same animal. They’re completely different. Just because cats don’t jump on you when you get home doesn’t mean they love you any less than dogs.

They are both cute!

I am so tired of being told that i am too old for the things i like. No cartoons. No toys. No fantasy animals. No bright colors. Are adults supposed to live monotonous, bleak lives ? I can be an adult and still love childish things. I can be intelligent and educated and informed and i can love stuffed animals and unicorns. These things are not mutually exclusive. Please stop making me feel bad for loving the things that make me happy.

Speak up, even if your voice shakes. Secrets only have power over us if we choose to keep them inside, in the dark, outside of anyone’s view. I can’t promise that every single person you tell your stories to will end up being a great, nonjudgmental, and healing listener, I can assure you that the pain of keeping them inside is going to be a lot worse than speaking them out loud. It’s through experimenting alone we find loving people who become our friends, who help us in our process of vying to know that we are not alone, who can lift us up when we are in darkness, and who can cheer with us when we see light again (and again, every time this cycle repeats). And sometimes, your secret, your story will let someone else come out of the darkness and say, “Me too - I’m so glad I’m not the only one.” So speak, even if your voice shakes, because you will either find the kind of support you needed all along, or you will find someone else needed you all along (and that in itself is healing).

Never fail to share a kind word if it’s on your lips out of fear of rejection; our world needs love more than it ever has. Never hold in a personal story of struggle because you fear it would make you unlovable or undesirable; when you know a person’s whole story, if you ask me, it’s almost impossible not to love them. Never fear, even though the potential reality of hurt cannot be denied; the hurt you would have of holding it in, building shame and having it become an essential part of you, is certain. If you feel like you have no one who would listen, just know you’re incorrect: even if there were literally nobody else, the person who wrote this would listen to you.

Speak your bold truths because the consequences of not doing so outweigh the risks. The renewed hope, benefits, and connections that you’ll get in return are far greater than you could ever expect.

When somebody says that “a man likes to feel like a man,” all I hear is “A man likes to feel superior to you and it’s your job to make him believe it.”

Someone said this to me once, that a man needs to feel like a man, I replied “well I’m not stopping him” and had to watch this fragile creature try to explain to me that my strong personality could demean men.

Like, if I have to pretend you are a strong man and cater to that then clearly you’re not that strong dude.

It’s funny how science fiction universes so often treat humans as a boring, default everyman species or even the weakest and dumbest.

I want to see a sci fi universe where we’re actually considered one of the more hideous and terrifying species.

How do we know our saliva and skin oils wouldn’t be ultra-corrosive to most other sapient races? What if we actually have the strongest vocal chords and can paralyze or kill the inhabitants of other worlds just by screaming at them? What if most sentient life in the universe turns out to be vegetable-like and lives in fear of us rare “animal” races who can move so quickly and chew shit up with our teeth?

Like that old story “they’re made of meat,” only we’re scarier.

HOLY SHIT THEY EAT CAPSAICIN FOR FUN

YOU GUYS I HEARD A HUMAN ONCE ATE AN AIRPLANE.

A HUMAN CAN KEEP FIGHTING FOR HOURS EVEN AFTER YOU SHOOT IT

humans are a proud warrior race with a pantheon of bloody gods: Ram-Bo, Schwarzenegger, etc.

More seriously, humans do have a number of advantages even among Terrestrial life. Our endurance, shock resistance, and ability to recover from injury is absurdly high compared to almost any other animal. We often use the phrase “healthy as a horse” to connote heartiness - but compared to a human, a horse is as fragile as spun glass. There’s mounting evidence that our primitive ancestors would hunt large prey simply by following it at a walking pace, without sleep or rest, until it died of exhaustion; it’s called pursuit predation. Basically, we’re the Terminator.

(The only other animal that can sort of keep up with us? Dogs. That’s why we use them for hunting. And even then, it’s only “sort of”.)

Now extrapolate that to a galaxy in which most sapient life did not evolve from hyper-specialised pursuit predators:

  • Our strength and speed is nothing to write home about, but we don’t need to overpower or outrun you. We just need to outlast you - and by any other species’ standards, we just plain don’t get tired.
  • Where a simple broken leg will cause most species to go into shock and die, we can recover from virtually any injury that’s not immediately fatal. Even traumatic dismemberment isn’t necessarily a career-ending injury for a human.
  • We heal from injuries with extreme rapidity, recovering in weeks from wounds that would take others months or years to heal. The results aren’t pretty - humans have hyperactive scar tissue, among our other survival-oriented traits - but they’re highly functional.
  • Speaking of scarring, look at our medical science. We developed surgery centuries before developing even the most rudimentary anesthetics or life support. In extermis, humans have been known to perform surgery on themselves - and survive. Thanks to our extreme heartiness, we regard as routine medical procedures what most other species would regard as inventive forms of murder. We even perform radical surgery on ourselves for purely cosmetic reasons.

In essence, we’d be Space Orcs.

Our jaws have too many TEETH in them, so we developed a way to WELD METAL TO OUR TEETH and FORCE THE BONES IN OUR JAW to restructure over the course of years to fit them back into shape, and then we continue to wear metal in out mouths to keep them in place.

We formed cohabitative relationships with tiny mammals and insects we keep at bay from bothering us by death, often using little analouge traps.

And by god, we will eat anything.

  • We use borderline toxic peppers to season our food.
  • We expose ourselves to potentially lethal solar radiation in the pursuit of darkening our skin.
  • We risk hearing loss for the opportunity to see our favorite musicians live.
  • We have a game where two people get into an enclosed area and hit each other until time runs out/one of them pass out
  • We willingly jump out of planes with only a flimsy piece of cloth to prevent us from splattering against the ground.
  • Our response to natural disasters is to just rebuild our buildings in the exact same places.
  • We climb mountains and risk freezing to death for bragging rights
  • We invented dogs. We took our one time predators and completely domesticated them.
  • On a planet full of lions, tigers and bears, we managed to advance further and faster than any other species on the planet.

Klingons and Krogan and Orcs ain’t got shit on us

We drink ethanol (in concentrations high enough to be used as an effective as microbicide or a solvent!) for the express purpose of achieving blood toxicity and disrupting normal brain function… AS A RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY!

On the same subject, we also deliberately incinerate assorted substances and then inhale the particulate-heavy smoke and vapor resulting for the same effect. EVEN IN THE FACE OF SAID SUBSTANCES BEING CARCINOGENIC, BECAUSE WE JUST DON’T GIVE A FUCK.

Humans do not have biological castes. Kill their commander and another will take its place. Soldiers left alone on a planet will start farming and manufacturing to survive. Farmers and manufacturers will take up arms and kill you if pressed. Just because two humans look different doesn’t mean they cannot do each other’s jobs.

Breeding does not kill them. A single human can mate dozens or hundreds of times in a lifetime. They often do so as recreation. Xenobiology team six believes they do not have a mating season but this is too strange to be true.

Their appendages are not designed for hitting, so they developed special training to make them very good at hitting anyhow.

The proteins making up their bodies are toxic and cause prion disease. Do not touch anything humans have touched. Do not consume earth foods. Fire does not adequately remove this contamination.

Humans perceive sixteen times the colors we do. Do not hide in bushes or vines from humans. They can distinguish your pelt from the foliage with ease.

We tried venting waste gas into the tunnels to kill the humans when they attacked. Turns out they breathe it.

Everything on their planet came from a single biological strain. They developed comprehensive genetics BEFORE they developed space travel.

They lack radio receptors and cannot be brought into compliance with right-thought simply by broadcasting to them. Even after we learned how to translate it into sound-waves one of their hatchlings drove the Great Authority mad by responding to every demand with a single question: “Why?”

I am speechless

We are the real terror to the aliens. That’s why they don’t come around
