happy catra day

love how catra is this extremely smart strategist and calculated fighter and how that translates to being the fatale esque character when interacting with rebellion characters pre season 5 but in reality with her walls down you see she’s just a socially awkward lesbian with anger issues. like even in s2 when she’s just with scorpia in the northern reach and she absolutely Cannot pick up what scorpia’s putting down when she’s asking catra about hanging out sometime (aka a date)

so much of adora’s inner conflict in s5 being that she wants so deeply to live and just be with catra (& how that’s when she’s at her happiest and most at peace even when everything is at it’s peak with horde prime) but she thinks she’s not allowed to want that; if she cares about catra and the planet she needs to die for them not be happy and let herself be loved. she can’t even voice it aloud, not even when they’re at the heart she just comforts catra but shows it through action, letting catra stay with her, an ounce of ‘selfishness’ because she yearns for catra’s comfort and presence. adora’s arc is so intertwined with lesbianism in our world; repression and ‘duty’ being impounded into us to the point where it feels like you shouldn’t even be thinking about another option.

the fire scene in mystacor is funny and cute for obvious reasons but adora’s facial expression versus catra’s after catra jumps into the fire and pushes her out is just always stuck in my head

sure catra can and will present herself as this suave fatale especially in their enemies phase but adora knows that’s not who she is (hence why glimmer’s interpretation in roll with it is just ridiculous down to the dress) deep down. like s4 catra is fun but it was fully her trying to be something’s she’s not. she’s scrappy with anger management issues but has a good heart and cares a lot (she even sees it as too much that’s why she shoves it down so often) and i think an even bigger thing is her not fitting into traditional gender roles.

shadow weavers “catra confuses and distracts you” spiel to adora obviously translates to homophobia in our world but also that this is kind of a typical thing put upon girls that are gender non-conforming; maybe it’s my personal interpretation but i think as a child she’s tomboy coded but that point especially fits as she grows up and makes her horde outfit stand out against all of the other cadets. (Not color wise but styling wise) combined with the fact that she wears a suit to princess prom and takes scorpia to try and make adora jealous all while leading their dance. and then the emphasis on her specifically wanting to protect adora herself. so it’s so interesting that as time goes on in the horde she shoves down all of these aspects of who she is identity wise; especially in season 4 by straightening her hair, her nails (though claws) are typically longer and her outfit resembles the typical female horde uniform for her position (which also can be seen as more traditionally feminine) and I think that’s a really underrated part of the show’s text. Like exploring being a lesbian and gender presentation under the horde regime which was inspired by christian religious cults.

catradora music headcanons I have

- adora is truly a (mostly gay) pop girly like t swift, chappell roan, MUNA, renee rapp are some of her absolute faves (also probably listens to girl in red like think of the big lesbian artists at the moment that are in the pop genre or close-ish to it)

-catra is listening to rock/alternative bands both the popular ones and the ones you haven’t heard of alongside riotgrrl music. but also she’s definitely into like mitski and maybe phoebe bridgers on the side

i love the small details in s5 catradora, the overprotective-ness over one another in shot in the dark right after they’re on good terms because they’ve come too close to losing one another completely, catra specifically looking out for adora in her own way because she knows adora will push herself too far and that shadow weaver worms herself into adora’s head, adora comforting catra every time glimmer teleports them all because she gets motion sickness, catra moving her bed far away from everyone in the rebel hideout but adora moving her’s right next to catra’s…

adora would totally get cuteness aggression over catra while they’re in brightmoon…catra just minding her business and adora randomly has to kiss all over her face or something because catra is cute ™️ and she is in Love

i think it’s interesting how adora and catra’s different forms of abuse affect their outlook on humanity; catra doesn’t really believe that there’s good in the world as a whole and is in constant state of self-preservation so she doesn’t care to fight for what’s seen as morally right most of the show, adora has complete faith in world but none in herself when it’s not tied to other people & values pretty much any good civilian/person’s life over her own. she’s always willing to die for a good cause and puts what other people want above her own wants. they’re both very extreme but only grow from that as they come back together. catra remembers the positives in her relationship with adora and realizes that she always cared about her, then begins to do the right thing because while there’s bad in the world, there’s also good. she doesn’t have to shut herself off from everyone and align herself with an oppressive regime to be safe as there’s safety in connection and humanity. her relationship with adora isn’t perfect and bad things still happen but she continues to do the right thing and protect her + other rebellion members out of love and knowing that despite her own extensive pain, good still exists in people and etheria can and Deserves to be salvaged. after adora allows herself to fight for catra again and express her love she breaks fully the confines of her controlled destiny as she-ra. for the first time in the show she allows herself to consistently want things that aren’t related to her duty. and once she hears that catra loves her there’s a push to believing in herself once again as she doesn’t need to martyr herself to matter to other people, she can just exist as herself in order to be loved and that can co-exist with her love for the world and it’s inhabitants neither one coming before the other.

adora is generally a kind person but she has such an obvious soft spot for catra and it’s so cute… catra will be all grumpy or just nonchalant or something and adora’s just smiling this Specifically For Catra ™️ smile or even with catra’s antics in the horde in their serious training regimens we see that adora still can’t help but still gaze at her fondly like she was whipped!! she would consistently be annoyed with anyone else but she just folds when it comes to catra

we talk about adora processing her trauma after leaving the horde but I think as time goes by catra processes what she went through as a child even more (as she already knew she was being abused) all while consistently being re-traumatized. like obviously adora leaving plays a role in her shift in demeanor but even after that in s1 there’s still a much lighter vibe to her character, after that she’s constantly forcing herself to relive the cycle of abuse over and over again. and then looking at her sympathy for shadow weaver/ her seeking sw’s validation at every turn in s1 & 2 versus her having a visceral and physical reaction to her presence in s5…
