Hey, you are not an embarrassment for not knowing how to do certain household chores/basic self-care. They do not come naturally to us. A lot of it takes practice! Maybe you had a neglectful guardian. Maybe you had one that was very coddling and never thought to teach you. Maybe you haven't lived in a place where these things were available to you or needed. Doesn't matter. It's okay to not know and far more common than you might realise.
That said, this website provides very simple instructions on how to do everyday tasks such as making your bed, using a washing machine, cooking different foods, washing dishes, taking a shower, etc. All you have to do is use the search bar to find the task you're struggling with, and it'll come up with what you need + other related how-to's:)
If you're having trouble navigating it, let me provide you with some examples:
- How to clean dishes by hand
- How to make your bed (with visual demonstrations of each step!)
- How to fold clothes (with visual demonstrations of each step!)
- How to take a shower & dry yourself off (also provides ways to shave beards, armpits, legs and genitals)
- How to shave legs, armpits, beards, pubic areas, etc. (a more in-depth guide)
- How to mop the floor
- How to sweep the floor
- How to swallow pills
- How to make small talk
- How to make eye contact in different situations (or how to avoid it while still looking natural)
It's also perfectly okay if these don't help or aren't appealing to you. Unfortunately, nothing helps everyone.
Also if the reason you don't know is developmental , intelectual or learning disabilities making you struggle even if you've been taught a bunch of times , you are so cool and awesome too :^) [smiley face ]

You are not superior to the person who is nonverbal. You are not superior to the person who needs a carer. You are not superior to the person who wears diapers. You are not superior to the person who can't manage a job or an education. You are not superior to the person who is intellectually and/or cognitively disabled. You are not superior to the people in psych wards and group homes. You are not superior to the person in the wheelchair. You are not superior to the person on disability benefits. You are not inherently superior to any of these people just by virtue of being more capable in comparison. Leave your ableism at the door or don't enter
Just a reminder to anyone who will listen! There’s a huge cold front coming up in America right now and I want to remind everyone to NEVER use or rely on a gas stove to heat up your home. You will die. If your power goes out, the best thing you can do is cover your windows, or get to an area in your house with no windows, and bundle up to the best of your ability to conserve heat. I know generating heat with whatever you have sounds good in theory, but we lost a LOT of people to carbon monoxide poisoning in last years Texas Freeze because many relied on gas stoves and other propane heat sources. A lot of people went to bed and never woke up. Please be aware of the things you can’t see, like fumes from your generator, built up gas when starting a car in an enclosed space, and of course, the excess carbon monoxide that can be generated by leaving a gas stove on for too long.
Safe things you can do to stay warm inside:
- Hang blankets or curtains up over the windows. Put towels across the bottoms where the gaps are. Same with the front and back door if there's a draft.
- If the power goes out, or if your heating doesn't work, get everyone into the same room, including your pets, and close the door. If you have a tent that'll fit in the room, you can set that up and sleep inside it. You could also make a pillow fort by draping a blanket over a table and hanging out under it. This'll help trap your body heat and keep everyone warmer.
- If you still have access to hot water, fill as many bottles and jugs with hot water as you can (Leave a gap at the top, because water expands when it gets colder) You can use them to warm your hands and if your tap water is safe to drink, you can drink it when it's warm to help maintain body temperature.
- Try not to drink anything that's cold, it'll make you colder.
- Alcohol does not actually make you warmer, it just brings your blood closer to the surface which is why it makes your face feel hot. But that just means it's easier for the cold air to draw that heat out of you. It will make you get colder faster.
- If you have a winter coat, great. Put that on. If you have even just a raincoat? Put that on! You'd be shocked at how much heat a rainjacket can trap!
- Do not let candles burn while you sleep. If you must burn candles, make sure there is at least one person awake at all times, and sleep in shifts. Don't burn your house down to stay warm.
For posterity, this post is from December 23rd, 2022. If you live in most parts of the United States, get fucking ready to stay warm.
I wish I could blaze a post telling people to test their smoke alarms but I have literally no money so if y’all could help me spread this the old fashioned way
Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors
This could save your life.
BOOST.
Absolutely vital information to have if you live where the waters freeze over.
I especially appreciate this guy's commitment to actually showing the steps himself. That cold-shock response is a bitch and willingly subjecting himself to it couldn't have been fun.
I don’t live anywhere near water like this, but I am still memorizing this knowledge because:
* I might use it in a story someday.
* Any knowledge that staves off the dying is good knowledge.
Some kids passed away today in my region from falling in icy water, so thought it was important to boost.
Also! You can get Naloxone (also known as Narcan or Evzio) for free at most pharmacies. CVS, Walgreens, and RiteAid are all a part of a program that provides Narcan for free. If you or someone you know takes any type of opioid for whatever reason, it is always smart to have a few of those on hand. It works like nasal spray and has instructions on the packet.
Needle exchanges too! You don’t have to be a PWUD to go to an exchange and ask for naloxone training and supply, it’s free, anonymous and they’ll teach you on the spot
Also it’s important to have multiple doses of narcan on hand. A normal heroin overdose might need 2-3 doses before paramedics arrive. A fentanyl overdose can take like 10 narcan doses, like you gotta have a stash.
shana tova to every jewish person reading this may we have a wonderful new year filled with growth i love all of you
non-jews: it’s erev rosh hashanah, the evening before our new year! wish your jewish friends shana tova, or happy new year today :)
i'm jewish and two of my closest friends are a muslim woman and a christian woman, and today we decided that this weekend would be a more opportune time of year than the month of december to say "happy holidays" since it's good friday and easter sunday, passover, and ramadan all happening on one weekend, rather than like. hanukkah, christmas, kwanzaa, new year's, etc. happening roughly over the course of 4-6 weeks. so. happy holidays to anyone celebrating this weekend :)
I dont know who needs to hear this
But I sure did:
You can and absolutely should modify the chore/self care task if it makes life easier. Sit on the floor while doing laundry. Clean dishes while in a chair. Sit in the shower.
Save your spoons. Accommodate your fatigue rather than fighting it.
king stuff
That’s so sweet
This is the purest joy i have seen in a while 😊
my client just said "there's bigger fish to fight" which is objectively a much better idiom
Sometimes it is your fault.. Sometimes you don’t listen well enough, you’re selfish, you’re rude and you aren’t always right. Sometimes you fucked it up and tbh that’s okay. It happens, learn from it, apologize and keep it moving. Just because you fucked up doesn’t mean you’re a bad person. Don’t dwell on it
no but this is so important.. it’s so important to just accept you can fuck up you’re allowed to fuck up. you’re allowed to be wrong and it won’t be shameful, it won’t be the worst thing to happen. you’ll either let it go or learn from it and not let it happen again and that’s good.
