A fishman!McCree AU that I’m sharing ‘cause I thought it was different enough from my usual aimless fishman-meets-humans stories. ----- In his youth, McCree was part of a ragtag pack of fishmen that viciously harassed humans mostly just because they could, and because they saw the ocean as their territory and them non-scaly, finless folk don’t belong there. The group was finally captured by Overwatch, but McCree was recognized as being particularly clever and a quick study. So it was decided that he would be educated enough to be used for underwater missions for Overwatch. It was rough going at first, for McCree was none too pleased at being shuffled around between various tanks and forced to learn the ways of the humans. There were plenty of escape attempts, but those were obviously wasted effort given that fighting on land is pretty hard when you have no legs, need your arms for walking and your head’s only a few feet from the ground. Despite this, he did manage to get some good damage in with his calculated tactics and sharp teeth. Even though he was causing trouble, many couldn’t help but feel impressed - especially Reyes, who thought the loudly hissing fishboy thrashing around like an upset earthworm would do just fine after enough discipline. Fortunately, it didn’t take too long for him to take a shine to humankind and their world. McCree eventually became close friends with plenty of Overwatch’s members and settled into comfortable routines with how his life was managed. He took pride in completing missions to the best of his ability and greatly enjoyed the many commodities that could only exist on land – the food, entertainment, etc. After Overwatch shut down, he was unwillingly released back into the wild, but… He’d been living with humans for more than ten years, with only a little bit of contact with other fishpeople. It was only natural that he couldn’t fit in with his own kind anymore. As the years continued to pass, he tried to keep helping humans out in the ocean, with mixed results. Some were afraid of him and treated him like a dangerous animal; others were kind and offered him meals to reward his good deeds. (Not much else you can give someone who lives in water…) I’ve got a bit of a branch here: In the more realistic version, McCree lost his arm due to a conflict with either other fishmen or a human. The past few years have been even more of a struggle than before thanks to that, and he’s really lonely and desperate for human interaction. Someone from the old days finds him wandering around on a beach somewhere and “brings him home”. He’s given his prosthetic arm and the news that Overwatch is possibly coming back together. In another version, I considered going the Little Mermaid route and have him willingly sacrifice his arm to a mysterious being in order to become human. Is it science or magic? Whichever it is, McCree has to adapt to having a human body and is conflicted on whether this was a good idea or not. Being warm-blooded is pretty darn nice, though.
Horrible story time! Have you ever played or watched SOMA? Great game. This might be a mild spoiler, but… I’ll just say that it’s got various robots in it who have the memories of humans, and they are in such denial of being robots that they actually perceive themselves as having human bodies. This denial is supposed to prevent them from going completely insane, which is what happens to most of the people who ended up accepting that they aren’t human anymore. I’ve seen a couple of jokes about McCree secretly being a robot in old posts from before he was ever shown without the prosthetic arm. What if…that was true…and McCree didn’t even know.
McCree didn’t just lose his arm. He was killed. The original Jesse McCree is dead, and the one in present time is an extremely advanced android (not sure if Omnic? Omnics seem to be a very specific type of android) that had McCree’s memories put into it. He’s so convinced that he’s a flesh-and-blood human that he doesn’t properly process when non-human things happen to him. His thoughts just kind of skate over it. He thinks he feels hunger, pain and fatigue, but it’s all in his head. None of it is real. His memories are just plugging in what he thinks he SHOULD be feeling. When people question his seemingly unnatural strength and durability, he’ll give casual responses about how he’s just blessed like that, or his training paid off. Just like in SOMA, whenever the topic of him being a robot is insisted to him, he becomes increasingly more aggressive and violent until he blacks out. Upon regaining consciousness, he can’t remember the most recent things that he’s seen and heard. This happens every time he needs repairs. Normally he’s pretty good at avoiding the kind of damage that would require repairs, but when he does take an especially brutal hit, he always sees open flesh and blood instead of the machinery and lubricant that’s actually there. So he’s utterly baffled when whoever’s treating him pulls out wrenches and other equipment that you wouldn’t use in human surgery. He can’t be an android, that’s just ridiculous. Isn’t it? ISN’T IT?? After he’s patched up, he either has false memories of being treated as a human or doesn’t remember the session at all. I don’t know how many of the other Overwatch members would know about this. His death occurred during the time of Overwatch’s disbandment, so I don’t even know if he was made into an android by someone affiliated with them or not. …I think I actually made myself cry a little the first time I explored this concept. McCree was having one of his denial fits at Angela. After he wakes up after the blackout and, seeing that Angela appears upset, concernedly asks what happened… She just has to lie through a smile to keep from setting him off again. *breathes slowly*
People’s memories not working properly always messes me up. People around those people wanting to help them and not knowing how messes me up even more. Why did I do this. Curse you, scientific exploration.
So here’s the result of this conversation. This is what happens when I plan on writing two pages: You get eight instead. ^ - ^;;
Even though it’s an Old West AU, I must admit that there isn’t too much Old West in this because I don’t write that setting it’s focusing on Jet first waking up and the contents of the abduction. But after spending so much time on it, I still wanted to share. Everything after this point would involve the cyborgs meeting Gilmore and having adventures across the country.
I hope you enjoy it!

Stars Out of Sand - First Steps
Jet Link’s spine arched in a sudden spasm, his breath drawn harsh and desperate as if he had been drowning. Though his eyes were open, he could barely register any sight. His instincts were too focused on getting his breathing back to a normal rhythm. After a few moments of flailing, he was suddenly aware of a pair of gigantic hands clasped onto his upper arms. A different kind of panic burst inside, and this time instinct of the acquired sort set him into fighting mode. For all the good it did him. With his thoughts scrambling to come together, it was all too easy for the huge looming stranger to pin all of the frantic redhead’s limbs to the ground. He could do nothing but helplessly heave in air. A few more moments passed, and he finally realized that the other man had been speaking in a low, reassuring voice for the past minute.
the Zero-Zero Gang
The not!cyborgs bios as per the old west AU…so far. This is prior any research so things are subject to change as I learn shit or alter the plot. They still have their numbers as code names should they need them, and they received their number in the order Gilmore recruited them.
Dr. Isaac Gilmore A medical doctor and inventor both. After a lucrative career and amassing a fortune in New England Gilmore decided to head out to the frontier to bring the newest scientific advancements to where it was needed most. He found a beautiful country beset by evils and decided to use his wealth to do something about it. With Ivan’s help, he began to gather a group of people to form a team that would maintain justice out west.
001 - Ivan Whisky A genius child who was traveling with his father, Gamo. Despite his intellect, Ivan was still treated as little more than a child and none would listen when he said his father was responsible for his mother’s death and his fear for his own life. Only Gilmore listened to his troubles and obliged Ivan when he begged Gilmore to take him away. Ivan was intrigued by Gilmore’s want of justice and together the two formed the team. Ivan is Gilmore’s “Number One”.
002 - Jet Link Jet was from a poor family in New York who traveled west to attempt to make a better life. His parents were killed in an Indian raid and Jet eventually ended up leading a group of train robbers known as the Blue Rose Gang. Gilmore found him when the gang betrayed him and left him to die by the tracks. Jet was given a choice: join Gilmore’s team or be handed over to the law. Jet gave his word to follow Gilmore for two years, after which he was free to go. Aside from fighting for justice he’s tracking the Blue Rose Gang for revenge. He has a history with Joe.
003 - Francoise Arnoul Francoise was traveling across America with her brother Jean. When on the frontier Jean disappeared, leaving Francoise with no money or way to find him, much less return to France. Francoise is skilled in gathering and analyzing information through what she sees and hears, noticing details and patterns that others miss. This and her education caught Gilmore’s eye and he offered her a place on his team: work for him and help maintain justice and aside from the pay and a place to live, Gilmore would help her look for her brother.
004 - Albert Heinrich A German immigrant and a war veteran, Albert was a sharpshooter and a sniper for the army before his lost his right forearm in combat. He lost his fiancée to roving bandits while he was away soon after. He spent months drowning his sorrows and picking fights in an unconscious effort to die before Gilmore offered him a place on the team. After Hilda’s senseless death, the idea of having a purpose and helping others not suffer as he did was appealing and he leapt at the chance. Gilmore makes him various prosthetics for the purpose of combat, one even capable of firing a rifle again.
005 - Geronimo Jr. Understanding that the only way to deal with white people was with white money, Geronimo left his home in the southwest to make his fortune, as well as attempt to unite the Indian tribes. He was unlucky in his endeavor and found himself on the plains. Upon being offered the role of chief in an exploitive ‘Indian show’, Geronimo assaulted a man and fled town. Gilmore, having seen the altercation, decided he needed such a strong man on his team and followed to make him the offer. With the promise of pay and through Joe a connection to the Lakota, Geronimo accepted.
006 - Chang Chanko Chang came to America to make a new life for himself but instead found himself forced to work on the railroads to pay off his traveling debts. He learned to use explosives when the railroad needed to pass through mountains. It was a miserable existence and he escaped as soon as he was able. He settled in a town on the prairie and attempted to work as a cook with the intent to open his own restaurant, though no one would have him. Chang’s knowledge of explosives and cooking gives him a rudimentary knowledge of chemistry, and for this Gilmore was quick to offer the dishearten man a place on his team. Chang is also the team cook, keeping the large group well fed.
007 - Great Britain Despite his initial successes back in England, Great Britain had nothing but bad luck on his tour through America. His shows in the east did terribly and soon avenues were turning him down. With hope for better luck with the ‘culturally starved’ peoples of the frontier, he headed out west to find he was just as unwanted and could barely scrape out a living for himself. He fell to drinking and lost even that much and was soon destitute. Gilmore found him and helped him dry out before offering GB a place on the team. As an actor, GB is a master of disguise and skilled in reading people.
008 - Pyunma Pyunma was captured and brought from his home in Africa and sold as a slave in the south. He managed to escape and fled west, hoping to make enough money as a free man to buy his way back to Africa. While wary, he took Gilmore’s offer to join the team not only for the pay but to help end such injustices that happened to him from befalling others. Pyunma often acts as tactician and his growing up in another culture and his time as a slave allows him to consider perspectives his teammates often do not have.
009 - Joe Shimamura Why and how Joe’s mother ended up traveling alone and pregnant is unknown, but she found herself among the local Indians and stayed with them after giving birth, though she died soon after. Joe was raised among the Lakota, accepted but never feeling truly one of them, but as a half-Japanese boy raised among the Indians he would find no belonging among white men either. Eventually he left the Lakota to make his own way and ended up making a name for himself as the fastest gun in the west. It was a title he came to loathe as it gave him no more purpose or belonging than before and sent glory-seekers after him. He accepted Gilmore’s offer to join the team in hopes to put his skills to good use and maintain justice for everyone in the west. He has a history with Jet.
Ahh, I love AU profiles! These are all very good.
I'm a bit surprised that Albert's backstory and loss of Hilda doesn't involve a crash of some sort - whether on horseback, or a wagon, or even a train. Ah well. I like the rifle arm idea. That must freak out a bunch of the rogues he ends up fighting. ...Oh, wait, I think I misread that. You meant he'll be able to USE a rifle again, not that his arm IS a rifle. Oops. ・ v ・;;
The biggest surprise to me is Joe's backstory involving him being raised by the natives. Wasn’t expecting that kind of dynamic. "...but as a half-Japanese boy raised among the Indians he would find no belonging among white men either." ...Half-white, half-Japanese struggling with prejudices in the American Old West... ahh... *whispering* Gun Frontier crossover, Gun Frontier crossover...
Ficlet: Eye Spy
Fandom: Cyborg 009 (2001)
Characters: Great Britain, Jet Link, Isaac Gilmore
Summary: Apparently Jet’s head comes off.
Notes: Pure and utter nonsense.
This put a big smile on my face and is one of the the types of fanfics I enjoy most: characters having fun with their powers. The emphatic voice I imagined for Jet when he said, “Hell yeah. Old crappy cyborg with wireless eyes and Pong!” is bringing me tears of mirth. (I remember seeing you talk about the UV lens issue before, and that still makes me sad. Someone needs to start a fund to buy Jet some brown eyes!)
Gilmore should be relieved that his children who have suffered so much are being happy and enjoying themselves. :’)
I wrote a thing wtf
Based on that goofy idea I had where the cyborgs fail in Re:Cyborg and the world ends. Pockets of humanity survive and view the cyborgs as gods who over the centuries came to believe it themselves. Just a random scribble that popped up when I was listening to this.
I just finished watching the Mythos arc, so the concept of the 00 Numbers thinking they’re gods hurt me more than it would have any other day. ; A ; At least they’re having a peaceful time in this particular vignette.
Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: GaoGaiGar Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Soldato J 002, Pizza - Character, Renais Kerdif-Shishioh, Tomoro Summary:
When Soldato J chooses to retake the mantle of Pizza he expects to regret his decision. Fortunately for him, his team refuses to abandon him.
Note: I think I’m the only 3G fan who actually prefers J to Pizza, but anything that gives the bird-boy angst is fun to tackle! inspired by a discussion thread from @chiauve .
Actually I do favor J over Pizza by just a little, since it was during the second half of the show the dreaded CLICK that made me go from liking the show to loving it occurred. Though they do alternate xD
And bird boy angst is always good >:)
Very nice read! (When I saw the title, I was actually expecting a humorous story. XD) Good work, Karkael! I couldn't help grinning at the part where it said that JP's students know him as the best pilot in the galaxy! I'm glad that J-Pizza is able to live a good, fulfilling life. Though I must say, I did quite the eyebrow-raising at the claim of Pizza being only semi-sentient. HMMMM? What's that about? Anyways, I'll definitely go check out your other fics on AO3.
I'm very surprised to see you say that you think most fans prefer Pizza over J! I've always thought it was the opposite, and that I was alone in my Pizza-preference! What actually got me wanting to watch GaoGaiGar in the first place was seeing pictures of J. Everywhere I went, people were greatly praising him. There were gifs, fanarts, fanfics and discussions of headcanons, but there was next-to-none of these things for Pizza. So I thought J seemed pretty darn awesome and was fully prepared to endure the long, thirty-episode-wait to get to him. But after Pizza's first few appearances...I became completely, utterly enraptured. Everything about him - his powers, his physiology, his psyche - was a fascinating kaleidoscope to delve into, pick apart and be inspired by. I thought, 'If he's this great while an antagonist, then how amazing is he gonna be when he becomes a good guy!!'
..........He did not meet my expectations. The end. (I still read fanfics about J anyways, though.) ((Sorry for hijacking a post that's supposed to be about your fanfic, but seeing you and Chiauve stating your preferences made me want to offer mine as well. ^ - ^;;))
ficlet: The Link Trainer
Been saving this one for today! Jet’s exclamations while playing with his new toy are too adorable! And I feel like this is a perfect portrayal of his father.
Hope everyone has a good Christmas!
