Would love to hear about the differences between the skull shapes, general locations, and colour palettes of all the coyote subspecies! Only if you would like to of course, as I understand there are a lot.

If there weren't so many I'd do them all but here's two of my favorite subspecies c:

Mearns' coyote (C. l. mearnsi) is a small subspecies located in the southwest (predominantly AZ) and often have this beautiful dark coloration.

The Northeastern coyote (C. l. thamnos) is a much larger subspecies on average and their skulls have a very unique shape compared to the other subspecies. They're located around the Great Lakes. The average color is the one shown below, but they often come in a red or blonde coloration.

These subspecies are often confused as hybrids due to their unique skull shapes. Mearns' on the left, the Plains coyote ("average" coyote) in the middle, and Northeastern on the right.

Mearns' are smaller with a more defined stop than the Plains coyote, while the Northeasterns are larger with more "wolf-like" features like wider zygomatics and larger mandibles.
