Absolute Batman #2 - Bruce And Friends Play A Game

Bruce finally meets up with his childhood friends for a game of cards, which he also uses as an opportunity to pick their brains about one of Black Mask's henchmen's masks he "found" while repairing the damage left behind by their battle with Batman....

---

The idea of a lower income Bruce having grown up with several members of his (regular universe) rogues gallery is fun, but I do think that it's kind of hilarious that Oswald is also really buff in his own way here. What comes from their mutual friend, Waylon, owning a gym I guess.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight - The Kryptonian Age #6 - Diana Meets Another Familiar Face

As Diana heads north by boat from the South Pole, it turns out that a mysterious Stranger has appeared in the hold.

---

I really really like the design of this version of Wonder Woman, even if she's thus far not really had a lot to do in the story. Also, kind of funny that this is the second Elseworld story in several years where he's impersonating another DC character.

Cornered and betrayed, The Question and Batwoman must rally a ragtag  group of allies to retake the Watchtower from a surprising villain—as the  true mastermind behind the conspiracy to take over the Justice League’s  headquarters stands revealed.

Man, it's odd being able to see Kate's eyes while she's in costume. IU wonder if she'll discuss how in her recent Outsiders series she kinda discovered how she, Renee and everyone they ever knew are all fictional characters in a serialised comicbook setting?

Baby Doll! Making her first appearance in the comics proper, it seems.

To be honest a little disappointed that this is just a mini-series. Ah well, maybe if it does well it'll get extended like the Poison Ivy book.

A thing that I thought was interesting in a tragic way in the Penguin show, is that Oz repeatedly made the argument of how the accomplishments of working people are often stolen by wealthy, powerful people while the people who helped them get there die in anonymity.

Without going into spoilers, I do think that it's interesting how in the Matt Reeves' Batman universe both the Riddler and the Penguin style themselves as "men of the people" who even manage to gain a level of popular support, but are ultimately just motivated by their own self-interests which come to hurt the very communities that they claimed to be representing.

Admittedly between the two Oz is the only who who explicitly tries to make an (arguably insincere) appeal to class solidarity, while the Riddler is more a disaffected person that feels society as a whole let him down in more of a generalised, Unabomber kinda way.

It's also kind of notable that Oz seems to believe in some level that things can be made better and will do things that while ultimately are self-serving also benefit enough folk around him that he can create the illusion of actually improving things for other working class people, whereas the Riddler's language and actions talk of the corruption inherent in the system but ultimately does nothing constructive to fix these issues (even trying to have the newly elected progressive, anti-corruption mayor shot), and as the events of the Penguin show those predominantly effected by his flooding Gotham were Gotham's lower income neighbourhoods.

I know that there is as of yet no plans for a season two of the Penguin (dependant on Colin Farrell's schedule and the events of the Batman Part 2), but if there is one, I think I can see where it might go...

He is coming back, although I've not really heard when (besides a separate animated show I think?). Considering how the JLI is a thing in the new DCU (a corporate-backed one by a currently good Max Lord is appearing in next year's Superman), I guess he could show up filling in for Ted Kord's Blue Beetle next time the JLI show up OR if that Booster Gold show ever materialises maybe they build on the friendship that developed between him and Jaime there. Maybe.

Ah sweet, new Zatanna series! And one that also stars Madame Xanadu and Mikey from the Paul Dini book (a character who I can see being handled a heck of a lot differently in the 2020s than the 2000s when he was created) from back before the New 52 reboot.

Also, mild yay for John Constantine not being involved thus far. Like, I like John, but not EVERY Zatanna story has to have him lingering in the background somewhere (Xanthe showing up could be fun though).
