What is the cannibal starks theory👀

oh it’s not a theory it’s just like. recognizing the elements/appearances of cannibalism in the starks’ storylines. like in the varamyr prologue, we know that it’s seen as an “abomination” (at least in haggon’s eyes) to eat the flesh of man while in the skin of your animal. whenever varamyr does eat human flesh, it’s painted in a horrifying light, as an example of him forgoing his humanity. arya has already hunted men as nymeria, grey wind was notoriously violent in battle, bran has most likely been fed human meat by coldhands, and rickon is currently on the island infamous for cannibalism. cannibalism (thematic or literal) is just kind of a connecting thread throughout their stories. it’s also a semi-popular speculation that jon may attack/eat people out of fear or anger while he’s stuck inside of ghost at the beginning of twow. jon does have warg hunger instincts/shared physical sensations with him:

It was a hunger inside him, sharp as a dragonglass blade. A hunger… he could feel it. It was food he needed, prey, a red deer that stank of fear or a great elk proud and defiant. He needed to kill and fill his belly with fresh meat and hot dark blood. His mouth began to water with the thought.
[…]
“Come, Ghost,” Jon told the wolf. “With me. You're hungry, I know. I could feel it.”

- jon xii, asos

The taste of hot blood filled Jon's mouth, and he knew that Ghost had killed that night. No, he thought. I am a man, not a wolf. He rubbed his mouth with the back of a gloved hand and spat.

- jon iii, adwd

I’m a fan of the idea that jon will struggle with his humanity after getting… un-second-lifed, and I hope we get to explore more of these darker aspects of skinchanging with the stark kids in general

Arya III, A Game of Thrones

This is the first instance we see of any Stark [kid] exhibiting warging qualities. And it’s my beloved Arya Stark who thinks she is dreaming (something that doesn’t change for quite a while haha) but she’s actually inside the mind of a Red Keep cat.

The gift was strong in Snow, but the youth was untaught, still fighting his nature when he should have gloried in it.
-p. 13, A Dance With Dragons

holy shit this entire prologue is so interesting

it’s dropping so much information that i’m assuming is gonna be important in the next book, with Jon’s death

first off, you have all of the stuff going on with wargs becoming their animal when they die, which probably means that’s what’s gonna happen when Jon dies, with Ghost

second, i’m assuming Jon’s gonna come back a little different. this is supported in this piece from the prologue:

“They say you forget.” Haggon had told him, a few weeks before his own death. “When a man’s flesh dies, his spirit lives on inside the beast, but every day his memory fades, and the beast becomes a little less a warg, a little more a wolf, until nothing is left of the man and only the beast remains.”
-p. 13, A Dance With Dragons

he said that this happens every day, and we know that if Jon’s revival is gonna be anything like the show, it’s not gonna happen immediately. he’s gonna spend some time stuck in Ghosts skin with no way out and likely not much of an idea of what’s happening. he’s had no teacher to tell him of what happens when wargs die, so he doesn’t know about what Haggon’s describing here. along with the confusion and panic and cocktail of other whirling emotions Jon’s gonna feel when he comes back to life, he’s likely going to have a better grasp of how to warg and how it feels to live inside a wolf, which leads me to my next point-

three, that first bit i copied above has to have some meaning. i refuse to believe grrm just decided to put it in just ‘cause. so, i’m thinking that Jon’s gonna come back to life with a fairly firm grip on his warging abilities (though maybe with less skill on how to slip back out of Ghost’s skin, which would really be something) and it’s going to effect the plot in some way. though i’m not sure how yet, and feel free to reblog with your own theories on how you think this could happen

anyway that’s all i have to say about the Dance With Dragons prologue for now

I’m super into this theory/concept. I love wolf!Jon. And I’ve played with the memory concept in my fic Dark Sister, Dark Nights. The are a few more things to bring up. When you come back, you tend to fixate on whatever was motivating your last moments. Lady Stoneheart is an example of this. All she wants is revenge on Freys. In his last moments Jon was thinking of his Stark family or wanting to protect them. hmmm...  In the prologue, Haggon also talks about mating when warging. It’s a BIG no-no. But he does it anyways. He slips into One-eye’s skin and mates with Sly. If this isn’t code for Jon and Sansa idk what is?  Then there is the question of ‘where is Lady?’ Sure we know her bones are back at Winterfell. But what happened to her spirit? Bran as Summer talks about still sensing her stuck in the halls of men (or something like that...)  So we’ve got wolfyJon with memory loss and a lot of rage and a sense of wanting to protect his Stark family. Sansa shows up either at the Wall or at Winterfell and you bet Jon can sense Lady in her. He also won’t really remember her as his sister. Maybe a faint memory but nothing concrete. Plus, we don’t know what she will look like. Will her hair still be darker? Will it have faded? Her red auburn could remind him of Ygritte.  I also have another sleeper theory that Ghost was not from the same litter as the other 5 pups. His eyes were open when they were found. So is it not possible that he is a little older? Wolves are known to adopt other pups. So why couldn’t that be the case here? Regardless of what happens, Jon being more Ghost-like is going to be very very cool IMO. Even if it has nothing to do with Jonsa, even tho I hope it does and can see it being foreshadowed.

I don't know if Sansa will ever warg but I think the remaining direwolves will be immensely protective of her and Ghost will listen to her most.

Then again when it comes to Northern mythology, there's a recurrence of the Age of Heroes and perhaps in the most unexpected moment during the War for Dawn we might see Sansa do something as a defensive instinct.

Well, it's canon that warging for an extended period of time fucks with your brain, so even if Jon doesn't literally die, he's at least going to be a little more.. wolvish

I expect so.

Luckily Ghost is this kind of wolf:

It was Ghost who knew what to do. Silent as shadow, the pale direwolf moved closer and began to lick the warm tears off Samwell Tarly's face. The fat boy cried out, startled … and somehow, in a heartbeat, his sobs turned to laughter. (AGOT, Jon IV)

Also:

At the base of the Wall he found Ghost rolling in a snowbank. The big white direwolf seemed to love fresh snow. (ADWD, Jon VII)

Not to mention all the times he is described as cuddling with Jon to comfort him and keep him warm.

If Bran loses his powers, do you think his siblings/direwolf will be affected?

Hi anon!

Yes, I think Bran losing his powers will be tied to a larger move on his part in dismantling the power of magic in the North. There's no point in only Bran losing his power. He may be a powerful warg and greenseer, but others could be as well. Plus, the origin of this "gift", as Varamyr refers to it, is likely tied to the first Long Night, so ending the second Long Night might require giving it back. Fully.

In order to make the sacrifice truly powerful, it can't just be the "evil" power that Bran has abused. It seems cheap to have Bran sacrifice his warg powers but let the other Starks keep their telepathic connection to their fluffy wolves that make them more powerful than other people. It has to hurt. It has to be a true loss, a true sacrifice paid in grief.

Perhaps there is a connection to Lady in there. It was Nymeria who bit Joffrey to defend Arya. It was Lady who died for it. Both girls lost their wolves.

You can't end an overall oppressive power like warging but make an exception for the wolves we like. It's going to have to be all or nothing. It may feel very unfair, even, just like what happened at the Trident. But it would serve an actual purpose this time.
