Since it's getting close, and very close indeed, to Halloween, I thought I might share a little spooky sketch!

These two are a couple of my original characters: Isabella Mallory and Elwin the Skeleton. They have adventures together in the Underworld while trying to find a way to get Isabella home.

And of what duos I've got, this one fits Wirt and Greg most.

So I drew them dressing up a bit! Isabella with Wirt's hat and cape, looking on with a bit of a smile. Elwin with a pumpkin on his head (skeleton!) and holding a teapot triumphantly over his head.

I thought it was fun. :)

The return of Elwin! And Isabella, of course :)

🖊 Travers

Sad dad characters intrigue me a lot. :>

*gasp* A character ask has been sighted!!

(Oh, same about sad dad characters, I always love em <3)

So Travers is from my project "The Prometheus Curse", and he's the first ghost that the Halwendes (the main kid characters) meet. There's a whole thing with that, and with the other Othryan phantoms, and i could talk about both easily. But there's one particular odd thing about him that I want to talk about today:

The sound-words.

See, as a ghost, he was sent back for a specific purpose. And generally (unless their purpose is to tell someone something), sent ghosts aren't supposed to talk to the living. So they can either be silent the whole time... or talk in words that are unintelligible to normal humans.

So Travers mostly uses sound-words. Meaning he makes strange (albeit still human) noises instead of normal words. Which can be a little off-putting if you've never encountered a ghost before.

(And he actually did use sound-words sometimes when he was alive! Back then, though, it was more for his daughters (who always got a kick out of it) than anything else.)

In the book, it was very interesting to write. I had to make meaning implicit in how he said his sound-words or what he did, rather than the actual dialogue (which he didn't have). But then I also came up with patterns for specific names he would say, because he's been doing it so long that patterns start to slip in, making it a little easier to know who or what he's talking about, if not the details.

The other phantoms can understand him just fine, though. And Baron. He's magic, so he can hear what he means to say.

OC-Tober Day #4: Favourite Drink!

I tried looking up what might've been around back in Naphtali's day (see results in last night's post), but I eventually went with my gut. My gut was historically accurate, by the way. Apple cider was definitely a thing back then - ever since the settlers got apple trees! So I say he's always liked apple cider, ever since he was a kid, and still gets all happy when he gets to have it.

(It was kinda funny drawing him, though, with the little tiny mug of cider in his big hands XD)

Wow, this is actually perfect timing, because I just finished Book 1 of the AU the other day!

Okay, so Wayland is really cool. In fact, he used to not even be in his own story - just in the AU, as the medieval version of an actual character/the Quirin to Azarias' Hector - but I liked him so much I put him in one anyway! The same one as Azarias, actually.

But that's enough backstory. Now, on to the actual character!

In writing Wayland, I've noticed that he's... well, a little at odds with himself. He's a peacemaker who must act as a soldier. A father at heart who cannot find a home. A faithful friend who finds he must take up his sword against those he cares about.

And he hates that! He WANTS to find peace, he WANTS to have a family, he WANTS to keep his friends. But the wars he must wage keep him from doing that. He can make peace for others, but never for himself. And it seems like everyone he tries to hold in his heart is eventually lost, either to their enemies or to themselves.

And that's only the first book! I have a whole bunch more story mapped out for this AU, and, well, he gets it pretty rough before the end of the whole thing.

But... he will find it. I think Wayland will find the peace he's looking for. I think he'll find the home he's longing for. And I think he'll find the friends that won't go away... or that come back in the end.

I really like this guy.

🖊️ Lina!

Thank you!!!

Okay, so one cool thing about Lina is that she remembers things. And I mean, she has a good memory normally, and remembers all kinds of names and games and funny facts, and things people said or did that even they don't remember.

But, when she's dreamwalking, she can remember way, way more than when she's awake. I think it's because her subconscious is closer to the surface, so her already-good memory is like, CRAZY now.

So, since she has this newfound depth of memory, she's recalling all kinds of stories about her family, and all their fun little traditions and family rituals, and talking about them to Mr. Guardian as they go along on their journey.

That... ends up being really important, actually. I didn't realize that when I was developing it, but it kinda is a big deal. Thematically and literally.

It also sets her apart from some of my other little kid characters! In "Prometheus Curse", for example, I have Ruth, who's a few years older. And she notices things, picks up on what people are feeling, even when nobody else sees anything. She can tell if someone is nice, even if they seem scary, and she can tell if someone's not telling the truth.

And that's not Lina! She can't always tell if somebody is bad or good, and she can be fooled, and she can struggle over whether somebody should be trusted or not.

But where you can't fool her is memory. She'll remember how the real person acts, and that's how she'll see through the disguise. She'll remember the stories she's heard all her life, and that's how she'll realize this is not a good situation. She'll remember the words you said, the promise you made, and that's how she'll decide to trust you.

She's a little like her mother, I think. The familiar is where she gets her strength.

More propaganda for Naphtali! I thought I'd share a little of his Origin Story (in a meta sort of way).

So, way back in January of 2020 (before the world went nuts), I was playing around with these music challenges. You know, create a character from a shuffled playlist kinda thing. I was working off of this one in particular:

And HOO BOY.

First song (the appearance one) was the freaking Grinch song. And not just any version, but specifically the Jim Carrey Grinch song.

(That's where the weird looks and features came in: I decided to take as many of the lyrics literally as possible. I accidentally got a bit of personality too, in that he's very pleased with his looks. He also does silly voices.)

Second song (the personality one) was "Grim Grinning Ghosts", and specifically this version:

(VoicePlay was a huge favourite of mine for years - thanks to this video, a lot of the ghost characters look like the members of the group!)

So from here, I got that he was spooky, and a bit silly and mischievous, but maybe not even really realizing he was spooky? And that he lived in a haunted house and socialized with ghosts all the time. (When I first came up with it, his now best friend was a ghost too!)

The third song (the rather vaguely worded "partner relationship" one) was just called "Enchantment". No lyrics, just music and whispery sounds. Like so:

I don't know why, but the vibe I got was "housekeeper".

At the time, she was just his assistant or something, but she was under some kind of enchantment, and also whispered a lot. Nowadays... most of that is still accurate, I guess. Except that now, there's a LOT more to their relationship than just assisting. ;)

By now, I was starting to get the idea that this was an unusual guy. Grinch, ghosts, AND enchantments.

But then I hit the "family" song.

And suddenly, this monster guy with a haunted house and an enchanted housekeeper has three 1970s kids showing up on his doorstep, and he has no idea what to do with them.

That's when it started to stick.

Then, fifth and finally, I had the name song. This one took a good bit of research initially, but I took my cue from the title:

"Prometheus" and "Flint" seem to have always been around (both having to do with fire). However, his middle name was harder. I almost named him "Corydon", "Baltair", "Boris", or (I can't believe I considered this one) "Alphonse".

In the end, I finally settled on "Naphtali". And am I glad I did!

It's funny, though, because after I gave him these names, I started thinking. I like tying in names with themes. But what happened was that, not only did I find themes to tie in, I ended up discovering some extremely vital plot points, the makings of the book, AND the very title of the story: The Prometheus Curse!

Of course, he's gone through a lot of changes since then (I think I was initially getting the vibe of some spooky supervillain way out in his haunted house all alone - back before I drew him, anyway!). And everyone else has changed and grown too. But I still love this story, and this world, and especially these characters.

In a way, this silly challenge gave me the entire story.

Or, it might be more accurate to say, if Naphtali hadn't come along, dancing to the music of these five songs, The Prometheus Curse wouldn't exist.

Vote for Naphtali, y'all! Keep him going to the next round! :D

Protagonist [Spaceland Pilgrimage @raincloud-the-33rd-frog]

A young starkitten forced into the unknown when his family is separated by unknown, dark forces. With his faith in the great Space Emperor's future kingdom [yes, this is an allegory!] to inspire and guide him, Protagonist is following the Cross-star where he hopes he can be reunited with his family in the new kingdom. But his faith and the true purpose of his mission shall be tested! Overall, Protagonist is a very upbeat fellow who would go literally to the end of the universe to save the animals he loves, but he is also incredibly naive, and slowly realizes that things are much harder than they seem. :')

Prometheus Naphtali Flint [The Prometheus Curse @eruanna1875]

A cheery monster showman (who's apparently immortal, if the hole in his chest is any indication), the Master of the haunted house of Othrys. Very energetic and kind of a dork.

Oh yes, he would be graciously appreciative for the support. It would be terribly impolite to do otherwise!

(His response would probably be doffing his hat with a sweeping bow and crocodile-toothed grin. He's like that.)

!!!

Thank you for the interest!! And yes, I do have a few stories available... though most of them are just me exploring bits of character and storyworld. I have some on @saved-for-me-own-stories (I did a couple of OC-Tobers on there).

I also have an AO3! Most of it is just fanfiction, but I put a few of my originals as well (Eruanna1875 is my main and CuriousHappeningsHereabouts is more original stuff). I even have the first five chapters of Prometheus Curse (Naphtali's story) on there!

Unfortunately, I don't have much of "Lina and the Locust" out yet... but I'm hoping to finish the draft I'm on by the end of the year! I was thinking about posting more character content on here, too, so maybe I can take the tournament as a kickstart for that! (Maybe I'll post the first few chapters of L&L too...)

Thank you again @larissa-the-scribe! I'm so honoured that you want to know more about my stories! :D

Lina Lane [Lina and the Locust @eruanna1875]

A five year old girl with dreamwalker wings, trying to say goodnight to her father. Bubbling over with stories about her family and unshakeably hopeful.

Loch [Loch, Stock, and Gun Barrels @larissa-the-scribe]

The smallest little (autistic-coded) guy, despite being a centuries-old scottish water fae with a dragon friend (named Friend). Accidentally ended up in America, and is doing his best to learn about this new place by reading the New Testament and the Constitution--which might have been useful, if he hadn't ended up in the Wild West. He is now following around an outlaw and getting vocally bewildered by all the laws this guy is breaking.

Loch moves to round 2!

Congratulations @larissa-the-scribe!! Loch is absolutely amazing, and he deserves this (if it wasn't my Lina, I would've voted for this boy, no question)

I was a little busy yesterday, but I finally made time today to draw this!

Lina very much likes the lake boy. She's probably forgotten there was even a contest. (They've definitely swapped dragon stories by now.)

Elysia Autumnbrook [Moonshiners (dnd campaign) @provider-of-guardians]

Elysia is a faun ranger. After failing her duties as a Tamer, she was cast out from her home, Mapleshire, bearing the mark of Pluto, so others would know to avoid her. Left to fend for herself, and unable to bring herself to trust anyone else or make a new home, she took up archery for self-protection, and wears a wolf skull to hide the scar she was given.

Elwin Clay [Underworld Stories @eruanna1875]

A noisy little kid skeleton who decides to attach himself to the much-annoyed Isabella. Has bound up his own broken bones in the past and left the rags in place (also kinda turned some scraps into a bad bandana). Hangs around the circus train wreck, but avoids the circus skeletons.

Elysia moves to round 2!

Avatar
eruanna1875

I kinda figured you were gonna be the one to get to Round 2, but also? I looked through your Elysia art, and she seems really cool?

Anyway, since I could tell, I spent the last hour (ish) before the results came out to make this!

Elwin is very excited for another "skeleton" with a cool cape to be "the winner" (I don't think he quite gets how this works).

So congrats, @provider-of-guardians and Elysia on moving to Round 2!

(Slow response, sorry lol) aaaaaaa this is so cute!! I had to draw something in return, lol X3

Elysia’s not good with people, but who can resist a sweet kiddo? <3 (Also idk how to draw skeletons fORGIVE OTL)

Major props to @eruanna1875 and Elwin! This skelly boy will remain in our hearts!!

I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner, but ACCKKKKKKKK IT'S SO GOOD, you drew Elwin perfectly, THANK YOU!!

Mr Guardian [Lina and the Locust @eruanna1875]

A winged sentinel of the Underworld who is befriended by Lina, and who promises to keep her safe as he helps her find her father... who he (apparently) looks like. He gently warns Lina of the dangers of this land, and is very bad at hiding how much her trust means to him.

Nabikio tiz Lucard [Silen Fah @vellatra]

A telekinetic vigilante

Avatar

IT'S TIED

Also, I find it absolutely mind boggling that it's literally two dark haired guys with swords and wings who travel through the Underworld and fight bad guys.

Like.

HOW.

How did we end up like this? How did these exact characters end up in the same post?

HOW?
Avatar
vellatra

Nabikio looked ahead down the dark passageway, toward the approaching torchlight and the crescendo of battle cries. "Sounds like a lot of them," he said softly, trying not to scare Lina. He drew his sword, and glanced at Mr. Guardian. "Together, then?"

Yes the odds are pretty funny here! Either way it goes, what a good match. May the best dwarf winged underworld swordsman win. ;)

THANK YOU, THAT'S SO COOL, OH MY GOSH I CAN'T STOP GRINNING
