Ancient Hearthian (Outer Wilds) Pattern

I got so many requests for the ancient Hearthian from Outer Wilds, and they really are so much simpler than the Nomai - but also, my notes and pics are a bit less detailed, and I've been so bad at even getting on my computer lately - so lemme try and cobble this together so anyone interested at least has something to work with!

Technical stuff: 3mm crochet hook, 9mm safety eyes, Red Heart Super Saver yarn in Jade, probably... but any nice shade would do!

Body:

They start as one long piece that kinda looks like a tadpole! A lot of the shaping is just by gentle smooshing it, but there are a few rows where you increase or decrease unevenly to contribute to it... I'm not even sure how much it really makes a difference tho!

  • 6 sc in a magic circle
  • inc 6x to make 12 stitches
  • (3 inc, 3 sc) 2x to make 18 stiches (and a slightly elongated oval rather than circular cross section when looking face on)
  • (2 sc, inc) 6x to make 24 stitches
  • 9 rows of 24
  • Add eyes and begin to stuff
  • Across the "top" of the body (wherever you choose that to be) do (1 sc, 1 dec) 3x, then 15 more sc to make a row of 21 stitches
  • Again across the "top" of the body do (1 sc, 1 dec) 3x, then 12 more sc to make a row of 18 stitches
  • From here, it's slow decreases (still at the top) and stuffing as you go:
  • (1 sc, 1 dec) 2x then sc around to make a row of 16
  • 1 dec then sc around to make a row of 15
  • 1 dec then sc around to make a row of 14
  • 1 dec then sc around to make a row of 13
  • 1 dec then sc around to make a row of 12
  • 2 dec then sc around to make a row of 10
  • 1 dec then sc around to make a row of 9
  • 1 row of 9
  • 1 dec then sc around to make a row of 8
  • 3 rows of 8
  • 2 dec then around to make a row of 6, fasten off and hide tail

Feet and Legs:

It looks like I really winged it a bit here, so let me try and figure out approximately what I did - the main idea is I think I made a very small tube for the feet, then pulled the tails through to the center, chained into a random stitch, and and did a few chains up and down to give it a short leg, then used those tails as well to sew them on to the body... I'm afraid I can hardly tell what I did for those legs, even looking at it in person, like it might just be a few knots... I am hoping that for here it isn't too much trouble for you to improvise something that works well for you!:

  • 4 sc in a magic circle
  • 3 rows of 4, then close off and pull the tails through the small cylinder, out the center
  • chain into a random stitch, then into an adjacent stitch,
  • sc "around" these two for 2-3 rows, to make a short leg
  • use the rest of the tail to sew onto the body.

Very messy, possibly blurry.... but hopefully this at least gives a bit more inspiration.

Ok, again, I apologize, it's not my best pattern, but I hope it will give people a starting point! Don't hesitate to ask questions if you need them, although as I mentioned, I'm not on tumblr much now a days. Don't forget to check out my Nomai pattern here! And as always, give me a tag here or @ erin.gurumi on instagram if you make one! I love to see them!

Here is my latest crochet project!! And thrifting, sewing, crafting... I knew from the second we were going to move to New Zealand, my "Halloween" (they don't really celebrate it here, but I feel like these costumes are going to be pretty versatile) costume for the family would be Lord of the Rings inspired! So here's our little fellowship - an elf, a dwarf, and a hobbit!

I of course was excited to crochet / yarncraft an epic beard - there are many examples online, I just sort of winged it.

For the cloaks and robes, I thrifted mostly duvet covers, bedsheets, and pillowcases. There are a bunch of cloak tutorials on youtube, but again, I mostly took some inspiration, and worked with the limitations of what I had. A lot of the rest of the clothes were thrifted / we already had.

I also made the leaf pins, trying to make them look a little like the silverfern that is so prominent here in New Zealand, the beard-rings and One Ring out of foil (the gold foil was off a Whittaker's chocolate bar!), elf bracers out of a thrifted purse, and elf ears from some felt and wire I had in my craft stash!

This was really fun to do! It's not a high quality cosplay or anything like that, but the cloaks have great swish, and I'm gonna get some use from them, I'm sure!

My first amigurumi in quite a while! Made during the little one’s nap times as a thank you gift for my husband’s boss, who’s been hosting us after a big move!

I've been fighting to find time to crochet in the past 9 months (and incredibly, it's only getting harder!) I've also noticed that since having a baby, my crafting interests have definitely shifted! It's so much harder to find the bandwidth for amigurumi, but can you believe a baby hat can be whipped up in like half an hour!? Here's a little snapshot of my crafting postpartum!

"Milestone blanket" letters/numbers:

I didn't even realize I wanted to do these until Solly was born, and thought if I did some crochet it would add a more personal twist! I am glad I did because the time really does fly by and it's nice to look back month by month and compare how he grows! I used the amazing free patterns from HappyBerry Crochet, following along on her youtube videos is a delight! I then used this really helpful tutorial on stiffening with cornstarch from Heart Hook Home to keep them in shape, which is helpful now that Solly has very grabby hands!

Baby blankets:

I actually made two blankets after baby came! One for little Solly and one for his slightly older cousin! I used this super helpful tutorial by Em's Fiber Arts and of course the letter tutorials from HappyBerry again! I've always wanted to use an Ombre yarn, but of course with amigurumi that doesn't make a lot of sense - a baby blanket was the perfect opportunity!

High contrast mobile:

This was actually mostly done pre-baby! I freehanded the striped sphere around a cat toy, the ring has a little shaker of pellets, the tiny balls have a bell in them, and the checkerboard that I made with this pattern from Dream A Little Bigger has some crinkly plastic in it! I didn't have the idea to put them on a hula hoop over the crib until it was necessary, but they really helped reset the brain an angry little baby for the first few months!

Christmas tree:

Our little New York apartment never had room for a Christmas tree, but I thought it would be fun to have a little decoration! I actually crocheted around a circle of plastic cut from a grocery store cake box and freehanded a cone shape - I used some weird fat yarn for the tree and some weird pompom yarn for the garland - sometimes you just have to dig around in your stash to see what you have!

Hats:

Once again I used RepeatCrafterMe's owl hat pattern as the base. I made a little bear hat with the leftover yarn from Solly's blanket, a little Christmas hat, and of course the Grogu hat/ears for Halloween! I free-handed the ears for the two ear hats and just kinda winged it on making the longer tail of the Santa-style hat!

I have been very busy! But I really wanted to hop back over here and show some crafting stuff I'm proud of, especially since while it was hard to find time to craft for the past 9 months, it's getting even harder! Here are the Halloween costumes I made!

Obviously I jumped at the opportunity to do a Mando/Grogu costume for my husband and baby, to go with the Jedi costume I already had! Here are the parts I actually crafted, rather than bought/thrifted:

Grogu ears:

I modified the hat part of RepeatCrafterMe's owl hat, and free-handed the ears!

Grogu robes:

I modified this free pattern for a baby jacket I found, using an old pair of my husband's khakis and the lining of one of those fuzzy sweaters!

Mando helmet:

I used this amazing cardboard and duct tape template and instructional video from DustFilms, I was kinda sloppy with it but it still turned out amazing imo!

Jedi robes:

I made these quite a while ago, using the patterns/info found on this old fansite, and here (only seems to be available via wayback machine).

It is so incredible to me that all these patterns and templates have been put out on the internet for free, some are even decades old!! This is why I like to share my crochet patterns for free - I hope they help other people on their crafting journey!

I've been working on a tiny cute critter (that's not made of yarn!)... I had a baby! While I was pregnant, I wanted to crochet my little friend's first toy! There's this very cute thing called "preemie octopuses", in which volunteers craft little octopuses to donate to hospitals - the idea is that preemie babies in the nicu are comforted by grabbing the tentacles instead of their wires or iv lines.

Since I had no idea what to make for when my little one arrived, I decided to make one of these (even though we fortunately didn't expect or ultimately have a preemie!) I figured newborns would like something similar!

I vaguely looked at the patterns available here , although I didn't follow any of them exactly - and full disclosure, the octopus I made wouldn't qualify to donate to a hospital, as they are quite strict about what types of yarn you can use! I am totally in awe of the awesome people who make these to donate!

PS: This will be the reason I'm even less active on my tumblr (I was barely active before, but now I'm busy busy!) Thanks to all the people who love looking at my stuff and using my patterns - I will probably be able to lurk from time to time and I love to see what people are saying <3

Nomai (Outer Wilds) Pattern

Solanum, my beloved! (just kidding!) I am so happy to share this pattern for the Nomai from Outer Wilds - it is a bit of an involved pattern, and probably not for beginners, but I will do my best to explain what I did! Please feel free to message me if you have questions. As always, if you use this pattern, please link back to my page, and tag me here on tumblr or @ erin.gurumi on instagram! I love to see what people make!

Technical stuff:

I used a 3mm crochet hook and these yarns:

  • Loops and Threads Impeccable in Walnut Tweed (horns)
  • Red Heart Super Saver in Warm Brown (face)
  • Red Heart Super Saver in Cream (hair)
  • Red Heart Super Saver in Paddy Green (space suit)
  • Red Heart Super Saver in Gold (trim)
  • Raspberry scrap yarn (glove/shoulder/thigh)
  • White scrap yarn (boots)

^Head: Rather than the usual amigurumi method of starting from the top/bottom of the head, I started from the front of the face and worked toward the back - this let me make the back of the head in the cream color to better match those ancient Nomai murals!

  • 6 sc in a magic circle in Warm Brown
  • inc 6x to make 12 stitches
  • (1 sc, inc) 6x to make 18 stitches
  • (2 sc, inc) 6x to make 24 stitches
  • (3 sc, inc) 6x to make 30 stitches
  • 1 row of 30 stitches
  • Add eyes (I used 12 mm cat eye safety eyes), and nose/mouth (you can do embroidery, paint, etc... I used marker!)
  • Switch to Cream, 8 rows of 30 stitches
  • (3sc, dec) 6x to make  24 stitches
  • (2sc, dec) 6x to make 18 stitches
  • (sc, dec) 6x to make 12 stitches
  • dec, until closed, stuff and finish off

^Ears:

Make two of these of course! To make a teardrop shape like this I start with a round amigurumi shape then kind of flatten it down -

  • 6 sc in a magic circle in Warm Brown
  • inc 6x to make 12 stitches
  • dec 1x to make 11 stitches
  • dec 1x to make 10 stitches
  • dec 1x to make 9 stitches
  • from here, decrease until the shape is closed, then add one sc to the top to make it extra pointy - flatten the drop and attach to the sides of the head!

^Legs/torso

This is the usual method I use to make "standing" humanoid amigurumi, where you make two legs and then connect them by crocheting around them - this time it was a bit more involved because of the many color changes and doing a couple rows of crocheting in the back loops so that I was able to attach her tabards and collar

  • 6 sc in a magic circle in White
  • inc 2x then (inc, sc)4x to make 10 stitches
  • 1 row of 10 stitches in White
  • change to Green, 5 rows of 10 stitches
  • change to Gold, 1 row of 10 stitches
  • change to Raspberry, 3 rows of 10 stitches
  • Stuff and finish off one leg, stuff and keep the other leg

Torso:

As I'm making the torso, rather than counting how many stitches until I get to a dec, I just eyeball where the decrease will go (for example, in the center of the back, or behind a leg)

  • On right leg, color change from Raspberry to Green, chain 1, slip stitch into left leg, sc around both legs (~20 stitches - if it ends up more, just decrease in back to that)
  • 1 row of 20 stitches
  • 1 row of 20 stitches in back loops (important for adding the tabards!)
  • 1 row of 18 (one dec behind each leg)
  • 1 row of 17 (dec in back)
  • 1 row of 16 (dec in back)
  • 1 row of 15 (dec in back)
  • 1 row of 13 (one dec in front, one in back)
  • 1 row of 12 (dec in front)
  • change to Cream, 1 row of 12 in back loops (important for adding the collar!)
  • 1 row of 12
  • Finish leaving a long tail for connecting the head

^Front Tabard

This is where it gets a little wonky, as I was really just eyeballing the widths of the front and back tabards and using what I had available in terms of the backloops. I also found that crocheting one way resulted in the "flaps" tending to point upward rather than downward, but... I'm not sure if it has to do with how you hold your hook?

  • Holding ami upside down, attach yarn by right leg with a slip stitch, sc 4
  • turn, sc 4 (repeat 11x, or however long you want the tabard to be)

^ Back tabard:

You know, I realized part way through that in the back of the Nomai space suits, they actually have two separate bits of fabric (it's super hard to tell from the front!) So I think if you wanted you could make it more accurate you can split the rest of the back loops in half and do this twice, it is basically the same as the front!

  • Holding ami upside down, attach yarn by left leg with a slip stitch, sc ~13
  • turn, sc 13 (repeat 13x, or however long you want the tabard to be)

After finishing both the front and back tabards, I crocheted around it with the Gold yarn. Just slip stitch the yarn into one of the stitches (it looks like I started in the back left corner) and crochet around, possibly going into the back loops at the waist if you need to! In the bottom left pic you can see I tried with a White trim first and didn't like it, so I switched to the Gold!

^Collar:

Quite similar to the tabards, except that I went around the neck a couple times to make the shoulder and back collar before starting to crochet back and forth to make the longer front piece.

  • Start with ami upside down, attach yarn at ami's right shoulder, sc around the back loops (12 stitches)
  • On second round, increase in every sc, (24ish) -
  • Stop when you are where you want the collar's front piece to start (I would say ~ 2 stitches past the center of chest) chain 1 and turn, sc 3ish across (or however many you want , chain 1 turn, sc across again (only two rows tall).
  • Attach Gold in the back and add trim similar to the tabards

^Arms:

Straightforward, but a bit of a pain due to all the color changes in such a small space! Believe in yourself!

  • 6 sc in a magic circle in Raspberry
  • 1 row of 6 stitches in Raspberry
  • change to Gold, (inc, 2 sc)2x to make 8 stitches
  • change to Green, 4 rows of 8 stitches
  • change to Gold, 1 row of 8 stitches
  • change to Raspberry, 3 rows of 8 stitches

At this point I attached the arms to the body, saving the head for later (I probably could have attached the head now, I just didn't want to while experimenting with her antlers and hair)

^Antlers:

I was surprised at how not-bad these turned out, as I really was winging it... I used the foundation single crochet (fsc) stitch (look up tutorials for this!) and some futzing with the orientation of the pieces to make the "branches" - I honestly don't know how necessary it is, but here's what I did:

Lower antlers (make 2):

  • 5 fsc, turn piece upside down, 2 fsc
  • finish off and re-attach yarn with slip stitch at turning point, 1 fsc

Upper antlers (make 2):

  • 8 fsc
  • finish off and re-attach yarn with slip stitch 2 stitches from end, 1 fsc

Upper connector (make 1):

  • 5 fsc, leave tails for connecting

I used a candle to VERY CAREFULLY burn the fuzz off the antlers, so they would be a bit smoother and shinier. If you want to do this, please be cautious, mindful of the type of fiber your yarn is made of, and if you are little, have an adult help!

I then attached the connector to the two upper antlers (just using the tails and knotting them together, but I am sure a dab of hot glue or fabric glue would work fine!) and attached all antlers to the brown yarn of the face, then finally attached the head to the body! As for weaving in ends, ugh I just tried to tie them off and hide them as best as possible!

Adding hair: I reached the image limit, but adding hair is pretty straight forward - What I do is cut lengths of yarn ~2x as long as I want the hair to be (in this case about 7 inches), and then use the crochet hook to thread them through a stitch. If you want them to be more secure, you can tie a knot, but I never bother since my plushies aren't handled very heavily. Since the back of the head was already done in Cream, I didn't feel like I needed to add hair until all the surface was hidden, so I just added until I liked how it sat! Make sure you add hair under her chin for a cute lil goat beard!

PHEW! That is a lot! Let me know if you try this pattern, especially if something seems unclear or wrong/missing, as I am not sure I did a great job explaining all of it! And please, tag me here or @ erin.gurumi on instagram if you end up making her, I would love to see! Outer Wilds is such a special game and I am very happy with how she turned out! Good luck!

Anonymous asked:

Could I possibly get the Boba Fett pattern from you please. please let me know. Thank you

All my free patterns are here!

While I never wrote up the Boba Fett pattern, I did write up the pattern for the Mandalorian, which was an improvement on the actual shaping for Boba Fett - all it would take is for you to choose different colors... I've seen other people use my pattern to make both Boba and Jango, which I think is awesome!
