This is the last I'm gonna say on it for a while, since I know I tend to get a bit fixated on this when it comes up.

The reason modern art is popular among intellectuals both as a class and self-professed (yes yes besides the money laundering) is that inherent in it is a disdain for common, everyday people.

These pieces that convey nothing on their own, no emotion, no impact, no meaning without their attendant note cards, essays, and youtube videos are designed, deliberately, to be inaccessible to any normal person happening by and looking on them. They're there to be rejected by anyone who isn't part of the "in" crowd, or who doesn't desperately want to be part of the "in" crowd.

It's hilarious how often their defenders are also some sort of self-professed communists or socialists or progressives, because it just upholds the pattern of samesaid communists, socialists, and progressives having a deep hatred of the genuine working classes or any creatives that don't tow the line.

It's like a test they're doing, to see who's willing to twist their mind into the right shapes to obey the narrative. The seething disdain for art that can communicate in any way without being explained (and accepting such an explanation without question) is similarly a seething disdain for people who aren't interested in listening to said explanations and accepting them without question.

Like evangelicals who reject any criticism of the church as a denunciation of God, they dismiss any criticism of modern art as an interest in only realism, ignoring that there are numerous hailed classical and contemporary artists who don't work in a realist manner and whose work is widely appreciated by the masses, because it still conveys genuine meaning, emotion, and feeling.

It's the reason so much of the current modern art discourse relies on its defenders directing you to youtube, tiktok, or other forms of online essay. It encourages the outsourcing of thought to others, and then congratulates you for being very clever for doing so.

The country isn't getting more rightwing, ordinary people are just tired of being lied to and taken advantage of.

A friend lately sent me some statistics showing that between UK, US and Germany the general population actually becomes more left wing with it's views.

The only exception included was South Korea.

It's just that the left moves away faster than the views of the population shift in it's direction. What lefties call "far right" is at this point what the left used to be in freaking 2005-2010.

Women also move left a lot faster than men creating the divide which is historically unheard of among people from the same generation.
