Tribute to my late grandma who was born in the year of the dragon. It’s my first Chinese New Year without her and I miss her so much.

When my parents divorced and essentially abandoned me for their new families, it was my grandma and grandpa who made sure I still felt loved. Without their care and guidance I probably wouldn't be here today. 

Thank you, Grandma, for everything and more.

In mine and many other east Asian cultures, the dragon traditionally symbolises things like power, wealth and strength (imperial symbol and all)

I think we often forget that in the story of the Great Race, the dragon came in fifth because it'd stopped to give people rain. Then it'd stopped again to push a rabbit adrift on a log across the wide river so it reached the shore safely (that's why the Rabbit year comes before the Dragon).

Dragons aren't meant to just be powerful - they are meant to do good with such power, and to help those in need.

So in this lunar new year, I hope you gain more power, so that you might be able to help others. I pray you have abundant resources so you may give to yourself and those around you. I wish you courage, endurance, kindness and generosity, for yourself and your people.

I hope you, and I, will be rain givers, life preservers, joy bringers.

I hope we will be dragons.

Happy Lunar New Year, fellow goblins!

Today (10th February) officially marks the first day in accordance with the lunar calendar. This year belongs to the Wood Dragon. 🪵🌳🐉 💖

Those born under the only mythical animal zodiac sign are said to be charismatic, intelligent, confident, and ambitious. They are natural born leaders who are innately lucky and gifted, but may become arrogant due to their skills. This can lead to setbacks and failures if they are not careful.

Wood Dragons in particular are characterised for being full of energy, passion and dedication. They have dreams of changing the world and are good at coming up with innovative ideas and implementing them.

Wishing all of us the very best year to come, and may the Wood Dragon bring us lots of happiness and positive change in these turbulent times. 💖

Happy Lunar New Year! We officially enter Wood Dragon year 🐉

For the occasion, I found fitting to revisit this past post showing a dragon made of straw <3

This fantastic art piece was created by artist and designer Ayako for the Shimadakara (“Island Treasure”) Art Festival in Urama (Okinawa).

As explained in this article:

The title of the piece is read as “Ryu Miyagi”, although it is written with the same kanji for Ryugu-jo, an undersea castle from Japanese folklore ruled by Ryujin, the dragon kami of the sea. The dragon structure is situated on a hill overlooking the village next to a private residence, and when the wind blows, the island palm within the dragon moves and winds like a living creature.
