Cryptid of the Day: Namazu

Description: The Namazu is a massive catfish of Japanese folklore, said to create earthquakes with its devastating thrashing and lives in the mud under the islands of Japan. Though mostly mythological, some still believe in the fish, with some thinking it’s a misplaced Mekong Catfish.

OK, but now I want to know how oarfish are earthquake predicting

in Japanese folklore, when large numbers of Oarfish are seen it means a big earthquake/tsunami is coming.

this doesn’t seem to actually be the case but it’s a hella cool story.

There is *some* truth to the “If fish are in unexpected places geologic things are about to happen” because fish ‘hear’ subsonic tectonic plate noises better than we do, and have demonstrably changes thier activity during siesmic events.  This is particularly noted in japanese freshwater catfish, which nomarlly camp at the bottoms of lakes or tanks, but will surface at the first signs of an earthquake, often picking up pre-tremors hours before a quake. HOWEVER, they don’t make a good prediction tools becuase they are MAD SENSITIVE to seismic activity, and will surface for ANY slightly-louder-than-usual noise, including rock concerts, unusual air traffic and fireworks on the other side of the lake system. So you get constant false positives.

Local japanese fishermen in the lake systems generally agree that seen One or Two fish out of place is nothing the worry about but if EVERY fish is acting weird shit’s about to get real.  The most reliable and earliest earthquake warnings will still come from your local seismologists though.  Sign up for the phone emergency alerts and have your earthquake kit acessible and you’ll be fine.
