dewey neuter day

not expecting any big changes but it was recommended to go ahead and do by the behavioral trainer (who works for the behavioral vet) because it likely won’t make things worse

i haven’t worked with him on much since we saw the trainer last mostly because we went on a two week vacation. he’s tolerating the muzzle training very well though. once that’s done, i’ll feel much more comfortable doing some on leash training with the other dogs.

we’ve essentially given this until my child is ambulatory to work. if dewey is not manageable by then, we will have to rehome. which breaks my heart, of course, but i can’t be breaking up dog fights with a toddler

one of the bits of rhetoric that has popped up in the Mediocre Dog Breeder Community is like. "well companionship is a legitimate dog purpose, and i breed my dogs to be companions. therefore i don't need to prove them in any way"

and i'm like ok. if your dogs are such nice companions, why can't they pass a CGC (or the UKC equivalent i can't remember what it's called). why can't get get some basic obedience titles. why can't they get accepted to do therapy dog work. why can't you breed dogs that are able to handle the hustle and bustle of strangers and unfamiliar dogs at a conformation dog show

all those things are relevant to being a nice companion dog! like come on lol

Stop bringing your reactive dogs into public spaces.

So as a service dog handler with a formerly reactive dog... I disagree.

So before anyone starts yapping about reactive dogs in grocery stores and on Flexi leashes. I agree with you, if you cant control your dog then they don't need to be in public. However I have met some amazing handlers with reactive dogs who have control of their dog, even if there dog is barking and lunging at my service dog. They are working on training their dog and give me and my service dog space. Just because your reactive dog is reactive does not mean they don't deserve to go exploring, it's not the dogs fault they are reactive. Just because they have behavior issues does not mean they should be shunned from society. People need to learn to not pet a dog that has a do not pet patch on, no matter the reason. I have met people who put do not pet patches on their dogs, because they don't feel like talking to people. Their dog is fine, no behavior issues. Reactive dogs cant even have the chance to become less reactive unless they are able to go out and interact to an extent with what is making them reactive, then the handler gets a chance to train them in public.

just felt like putting down my opinon as a service dog handler, cause I do think reactive dogs should be allowed in public if they are under control to an extent. (pet friendly places only duh)

i bring a very “you’re describing a shih tzu or perhaps a chihuahua” to the “what dog breed should I get based on these lifestyle needs” conversation that people who were hoping I’d say “corgi” really don’t like
