Random stuff I found on my desktop(that(I think)I never posted here). Most of them are experiments, exercises and random (restaurant)doodles.
Found this tutorial online, so I thought I try one too. Didn't spend much time on it(in fact I made this really fast), since this is just a test. There should be more inbetween steps of building the character, more expressions and different angles and poses. Added the ears just in case. Ears are my idea and not an official design, since I don’t know how his “real” ears look like. So it is just pure guessing. Also for those who want to draw more cartoony in general(or just want to draw Merlock better), I would recommend not from copying people me(there is the danger of copying my mistakes), it is better to study how they draw him in the movie, study classic cartoons and exercise. For learning cartoony drawing style, the Preston Blair books are the best! If you want to go deeper into animating the "animator's survival kit" is the book for you!
In general it is the best to find out why the drawing/character look so good and what the artist tries to express, instead of blindly copying something. Another reason why I made this is because I cannot find any model sheets, turnarounds and development art of Merlock(if you have some, or know links, let me know!). For this tutorial, keep in mind that this is how I personally draw Merlock. If you pay attention to the cartoon movie, you will notice that his style keeps changing.
