Happy K/S Day!
“I definitely designed it as a love relationship… That was the relationship I tried to draw. I think I also tried to draw a feeling of belief that very few of us are complete unto ourselves. It’s quite a lovely thing… Where two halves make a whole.” - Gene Roddenberry
From Letters of Note: in which it is revealed that space husbands exists at least in part because Gene Roddenberry was like, Jeez Isaac Asimov how do I make Kirk more likeable? And Asimov was like, You should probably make him really obsessed with Spock. Yeah, people will like that. And have them save each other’s lives more? And dress up in weird outfits. For mission reasons. I don’t know just make sure that it’s impossible to think about one of them without thinking about the other. Now go do what I said I’m the master of hard science fiction I know what I’m talking about.
(Also, in which many jokes are made at the expense of William Shatner[’s ego].)
Gene Roddenberry, Author’s preface for the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (via buckybearys)
"If we cannot learn to actually enjoy those small differences, to take a positive delight in those small differences between our own kind, here on this planet, then we do not deserve to go out into space and meet the diversity that is almost certainly out there.”
