Fanfic: here’s a funny story
Canon: There was tension and pining, but they never even kissed.
Fanfic: Actually,
Canon: Torture the cinnamon roll.
Fanfic: Torture the cinnamon roll.
Canon: When they traveled they stayed in separate rooms
Fanfic: AND. THERE. WAS. ONLY. ONE. BED!!!!!
Canon: … and they were roommates.
Fanfic: oh my god, they were roommates…
Canon: They were international assassins who assassinated assassins.
Fanfic: But hot DAMN wait till you hear about this cafe they opened
Canon: They had a coffeeshop
Fanfic: but they were ASSASSINS
Canon: they were mortal enemies and attempted to murder each other on multiple occasions
Fanfic: bUT THEY GOT MARRIED AND ADOPTED CHILDREN
Everytime I reblog this has a new addition and it’s the best
Canon: They were straight
Fanfic: Lol
When the ending sucked, but fan artists and fic writers got your back
Do you ever become so wrapped up in Everybody Lives AUs that you forget that Everybody did not, in fact, Live
This has been a PSA.
I’m trying not to reblog posts on this blog but I feel that this is important to post here.
on a related note:
canon: character is seen eating curly fries in one (1) episode
every fic in existence: they’ve never eaten anything besides curly fries in their entire life. their entire world revolves around curly fries. they sleep in a nest of curly fries and took a carton of them to junior prom. there’s always a backup fry in their pocket in case they become hypofrycemic
Here’s the thing. Canon holds no real authority. Stories aren’t spoken into concrete production. Expensive means of production make it seem that way. But hear me out. Stories only really exist in people’s imaginations. With the canon, it’s all just a matter of whose imagination got the funding that determines what you’re seeing. So when canon turns bad, you don’t have to take that in as fact. You can be like, “Whose imagination are we in? It’s terrible here.” And you can go somewhere else. The trappings may be run on a shoestring. But the stories there are just as real.
YES YES YES!!!!!!!!! THIS!!!

Does anyone else make a distinction between “headcanon” and “fanon?”
For me, “headcanon” means any idea about a story or character that is not actually canon. “Fanon” is more specific and refers to headcanons that are widely popular within a fan community. So headcanon is more personal and individual than fanon, I guess.
