If your democrat friends start muttering about stolen election conspiracy theories, the time to have a sit down with them and express your concerns is NOW, while you still have a chance to reach them, not 6 months from now when they're fully conspiracy-pilled.

Here's some of the talking points and why they're bullshit:

  • '10 million votes don't just disappear!' -> Joe Biden's 81 million votes were a statistical outlier, sparked by the recent experience of the Trump presidency. The democrats failed to maintain that sense of urgency, but Harris still got more votes than Hillary Clinton, more than Obama and more than any previous democratic candidate. These numbers are not weird at all.
  • 'The Republicans tried to infiltrate election- and vote counting organizations!' -> yeah, they did, and yet hundreds of independent legal observers didn't see anything go wrong enough to raise any alarms. Independent exit polls are also very consistently similar to the counted votes. Tons of international organizations specialized in this stuff observed the election and didn't see a reason to raise the alarm.
  • 'But I know a dozen democrats whose mail-in votes were not counted!' -> In any election a certain number of votes are registered as invalid because something was wrong with the ballot. In a country the size of the US, that translates to many thousands of votes. The internet allows these people to find each other, creating the false impression that a suspiciously large group of votes was not valid.
  • 'Musk used Star Link to mess with electronic voting!' -> Electronic voting machines are not connected to the internet and dozens of independent media have already debunked this myth. It is absolutely impossible to use Star Link to fake election results.
  • 'There is voter disenfranchisement!' -> This is true. This has always been true, for every election. It's an issue worth talking about but it's not a special secret conspiracy that's unique to this election.

But just as importantly as the facts: sit down with your friend and talk about the anxiety that's behind their conspiracy leanings. Acknowledge their pain and fear. Help them find ways to feel less powerless and regain their sense of agency. Take them to a mutual aid event, involve them in a fundraising event for a marginalized group, invite them to a local community effort. If they spend more time feeling connection and empowerment and less time doom scrolling online, they're far more likely to stay in reality.

This one broke containment and that's good. The people I'm trying to reach are probably not my usual audience.

However, it is fucking annoying to see people in the notes going 'YES! We should be putting all the blame on the non voters instead!'. No, fuck you. Drop the conspiracy thinking but also drop the scapegoating. It's the Party's job to offer people something that they want to vote for, not the other way around.

It's time to face head on that the Democratic Party has failed people. By supporting a genocide, by not raising minimum wage and living standards, by not actually ending the pandemic, by pushing anti-immigrant ads and campaigning towards the right and taking their base for granted. They've failed.

There's multiple ways to move forward from this. Improve the democrats, join a third party, prepare to protest, or focus on mutual aid and community building instead: choose your own adventure. There are a lot of ways to make things a little less shit. All of them involve building bridges towards the people that have been failed by the Democratic Party. All of them involve solidarity and understanding.

Spending the next 4 years shouting at nonvoters or disappearing into a conspiracy is going to make things worse, not better.

i genuinely think that physically it’s easier to have hard conversations when you’re both facing forward, not having to look at each other. the catholic church knew this also

I can't stop thinking about this reddit post on soapmaking dude

I cannot express what an insane recipe that is. No one else could grasp it either

Like beeswax doesn't. It kinda just stays as beeswax in the soap. The lye has nowhere to go with it. That liquid seeping out of the soap? The brown and clear drops?? That's lye. That's straight up lye. This mf made the soap equivalent of the Chernobyl elephants foot.

Quick reminder that if you touch lye with your bare hands, it will react with the fatty oils on and in your skin to create soap molecules.

That means it will give you chemical burns while creating human soap.

OP’s comment about the soap equivalent of a Chernobyl elephant’s foot is on point.

Lye (aka sodium hydroxide) turns hydrocarbons/fats into soap.

You are a hydrocarbon.

Please be careful when making soap, because You are a thing that could be used to make soap. And nobody wants to bathe in human soap, no matter how much rosemary you put in it.

if your trans feminist theory link post doesn’t include anything by trans men it’s only half a theory. you can’t just define trans men out of your version of feminism

Avatar

there Has been a lot of work by feminists to talk about men's issues and needs However. this simply does not mean that All feminist spaces and feminists are good at doing this. like. feminism has, historically, had a lot of issues with how to address the relationship between women and men, and how to fit trans and imtersex people into an inherently binarist framework of gender relations.

once again there is no way to address certain issues in feminist spaces without talking about the treatment of men and masculinity as something innately suspicious and negative if not outright hostile. this has been an issue for years. i need people to stop going "why are feminist spaces so hostile to trans women and men! why are nonbinary people seen as male treated worse! why do so many men see feminism as a space hostile to their existence*!" and then get defensive when people point out that maybe we still have some work to do on creating a feminist vision that is not innately binarist, that does not view maleness and masculinity as The Other if not The Enemy.

*yes many cis men see feminism like this because it questions the patriarchy which they still rely on for a sense of identity and self worth, and they are intimidated by the amount of self-reflection feminism asks of them. this can be true at the same time that many feminist spaces do, in fact, make themselves hostile to men, and fail to really promote an anti-patriarchal male perspective that would make more cis men feel that feminism is "for them." many self-proclaimed feminists still rely on patriarchal tools like mocking penis size which is not only part of violent intersexism, but it's also a failed opportunity to resist an aspect of patriarchy which largely impacts men and show what we mean when we say feminism is for everyone. we CAN do better.

It seems like there’s this cycle of republicans making the economy bad and then people get tired of the republicans and elect a democrat and the democrat inherits a bad economy and then they sort of fix it somewhat and then people are like hey the economy is bad it was better during the Republican administration and then they elect a Republican who inherits a better economy from the democrat while he’s trashing it and then people are like hey he’s trashing the economy and then they elect a democrat who inherits a bad economy and fixes it somewhat and then people are like hey the economy was better when there was a Republican and then they elect a Republican who trashes the sort of better economy he inherited from the democrat and so on and so forth like forever I guess

Let’s be clear. I want the democrats to be better. They suck at a lot of stuff. They’ve done some stupid things. But Biden and the democrats stopped us from falling into a literal economic depression. They did some stuff that frickin worked. But the economy was better during the trump administration (because of the economy he inherited from the Obama administration) so let’s reelect that idiot what could go wrong surely his proposed tariffs won’t affect the prices that much in a country with a smaller manufacturing sector than it used to have that imports most of its consumer goods
