As ever, Roman poets are pathetic in the best way.

This reminds me a great deal of Ovid's pure distress in the Ars Amatoria, Amores and Remedia Amoris. Some of his linguistic choices are bourn of pure desperation. For example:

"Hic tibi quaeratur socii sermonis origio,
Et moveant primos publica verba sonos.
Cuius equi veniant, facito, studiose, requiras:
Nec mora, quisquis erit, cui favet illa, fave."

- Ars Amatoria, Liber I, lines 143-146

"Here seek for yourself the beginning of friendly conversation,

And move first sounds to trivial remarks.

See to it, eager one, that you ask which horses come:

And without delay, you will favour whichever one she favours."

Ovid is giving advice on generic conversation starters. Surely everyone knows how to do this? It's very pathetic to need a reminder. (Translation is my own, so I apologise for the quality.)
