Excerpt:

She noticed the child had one hand behind his back, while in the other one, he held an angular wooden toy. Something about the object must have struck a chord with Guts. He drew his lips back over his teeth.

“Damn,” he growled. “You again.”

As though in confirmation, the boy’s hair suddenly blanched white.

“Why did you leave me?” he asked. “I only have this to play with now.”

He held up the object, which Farnese could now identify as a toy castle.

What?

Excerpt:

“I’ve only sent the video to you so far,” he says, swiping the back of his hand across his nose. It comes away red and sticky. “Whether it stops there or not is up to you.”

“I don’t understand you.” Guts looks like he wants to deck him again… but he sublimates the urge on the closest wall. It’s giving mafia don whose second cousin died in a territorial dispute. Some paint flakes off; some drywall crumbles. “Damn you! You’re the king of Silicon Valley. Falconia Inc.’s stocks are doing numbers this year — and from what the press is sayin’, you’re set to take over Kushan Enterprises, too. Why isn’t that enough? Huh? What do you want from me? Why the fuck isn’t that enough?”

“That’s a good question.” Griffith’s lips twitch sadly. “I don’t know.”

People talk about love at first sight like it’s some grand cosmic phenomenon, but as far as Guts’s relationship with Griffith is concerned, it was a decision. A decision that Griffith made. Yeah, true, it’s not like Guts was immune to Griffith’s charms, but he wouldn’t have initiated jack-shit on his own. Griffith had held the reins from the beginning.

Griffith will always hold the reins.

The first time Griffith has a vision, it’s while he’s petting a stray dog, a dark and mangy little critter covered in scars. When he looks up, he sees the towering figure of a man – clad all in black and wielding something too big to be called a sword.

That did the trick: the woman was promptly forgotten, and Griffith had Guts’s undivided attention. “I still don’t understand.” Guts realized he was whispering, even though it was just the two of them in the castle garden. “When did we get married?”
