joke post but i am actually 100% serious in my appreciation of (to us) unusual spellings in a time of non-standardization..... ESPECIALLY when it allows you to get an idea of how a foreign name was pronounced / how people understood it lol

a huge shoutout to the spanish for hearing the count of essex as the count of sex

Thinking about Henry V attending his first parliament as Prince of Wales at 13 years old and being bored out of his skull and imagining how much worse it would've been for Richard II, who attended his first parliament as Prince of Wales at 9 years old.

Thinking about Henry VI attending parliament as a literal infant too.

A contemporaneous biography of James VI by John Colville has a story about the king, then five years old, at his first Scottish parliament:

In Sterling, the King being conveyed to the Parliament house, and set at the board, by fortune he espied a hole in the boardcloth; so that as young children are always unconstant and restless, he pressed to attain to the hole with his finger, and asked of a Lord who sat near by him to know what house that was; and he answered that it was the Parliament house. "Then," said the King, "this parliament has a hole into it." Whether God inspired the babe then with prophecy at that time or not, I will not dispute...
