Who else spent way too long in Spinda’s Cafe?
Thought I’d post these here as well! Just fleshing out some personality for Jaune and Iggy from the Double-2-Single one nuzlocke I’m running with some friends on discord!
Jaune is relaxed by nature, but is kind of a perfectionist. When things go wrong in our out of a dungeon he tends to have minor breakdowns. He isn’t sure why he’s like this, but it’s likely due to some lasting trauma from the future.
Iggy, on the other hand, crushes easily. At one point or another he’s likely had a minor crush on almost everyone in town. His current Pokemon of affecting is Spinda from the cafe. Jaune teases him about his crush, but is also his go-to wingman!
My piece for the @pkmguildzine ! This a digital PDF zine dedicated to the Mystery Dungeon series, with proceeds going towards the Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center and will be available until July 10th. My piece is centered around the Spinda Cafe, a new feature that was added in Explorers of Sky (my personal fav of the series)

They use gummi doping drink.
#005 - Spinda’s Cafe
All right, let me be explain myself; I beat Explorers of Time around twice, and this is my first playthrough of Explorers of Sky. Gummies tend to pile up in my Storage because I don’t use them very often, so when I found out you could make them into drinks, I basically just spent twenty minutes using up all of the gummies I had in storage.
Spinda’s café!
- PMD: Explorers is the only game so far to have its story structured into chapters. PMD Rescue Team and Gates to Infinity just have the protagonists live out the story, just taking out it day by day.
- Rescue Team had Friend Areas, Gates to Infinity had Paradise itself, and Explorers had Chimecho’s Assembly. In Sky, team mates would wait in the cafe.
- The protagonists/player characters from Rescue Team and Gates to Infinity are pulled from the human world, to save the pokemon world. Gates to Infinity tries to go for extra immersion by mentioning the friends and family and actively up bringing up travel between their world and ’our’ world/ the real world, at least near the end of the game.
- The player character from Explorers is a human from a paralyzed future. The player has a past but its own with Grovyle, Celebi and others from that future. They’re not so much trying to save their world as much having already ‘lost’ (the planet is paralyzed) and wanting to give others a chance even at the cost of their lives.
- Humans are considered myths and fairy tales in their worlds.
- The player characters in Rescue Team and Gates to Infinity is not the only human turned pokemon in their stories. The player character in Time is the only human encountered, though the concepts of humans is still around, if only as fairy tales.
- If I remember correctly, the player character is Rescue Team readily gives up their memory and voluntary become a pokemon. A human was cursed into being a pokemon for abandoning his partner, Gardevoir. Being a human is a plot point and essential for overcoming the challenge in Gates of Infinity. The human in Explorers was a human but got turned and got amnesia was an accident by botched time travel.
- The protagonist of Explorers has a special power that could only be accessed by having a trusted partner. I can’t remember if it’s a human only power or if it’s necessary the trusted partner be a pokemon (Grovyle, your partner)
- The cause for mystery dungeons popping up for each game was 1) human abandoning Gardevoir 2) no actually it was a meteor 3) time going out of whack 4) everybody’s distrust and despair
- The partner character for Rescue Team wants to help out pokemon in need. The player character for Explorers wants to become a Explorer and in particular figure out the mystery of the relic they find. The partner character wants to build a Paradise for other pokemon.
- Partner character from Explorers also has their living quarters by Sharpedo Bluff before apprenticing with Wigglytuff’s Guild.
- Partner character goes from cowardly wimp to confident explorer.
- Finding the relic is proof of entry for Hidden Land and then Temporal Tower.
- Chapters 1-9 take place with Wigglytuff’s Guild and its main antagonist is Team Skull. Chapter 10 is Dusknoir, thought it takes a couple of chapters before the main plot gets into gear. I think there were 20 chapters in all.
- Every game has post-game after the player character comes back, but the Explorers had the longest and most events. Arguably, with the most personality left in tact for the partner.
- Your partner will consider you, their partner, to be their dearest and most invaluable person in their life.
these were taken from memory so sorry if i get things wrong. i was going somewhere with this but i forget what exactly. something about story structures and plot.
