"Then what shall we die for? Now You will listen to me. Listen! The Brethren will still be looking here, to us, to the Black Pearl to lead. And what will they see? Frightened bilge rats aboard a derelict ship? No. No, they will see free men! And freedom! And what the enemy will see is the flash of our cannons. They will hear the ring of our swords, and they will know what we can do! By the sweat of our brows, and the strength of our backs…and the courage of our hearts! Gentlemen! Hoist the colors."

Vintage Disney Christmas cards. I’ll be featuring a large collection of them in the run-up to Christmas. Most of them will be company/studio cards from the 1950s and 1960s, with a few exceptions. I just love the style of these.

Two years ago I featured Lucasfilm company cards, then it was Jim Henson and weird vegetables, so now it’s Disney.

Guardians of Childhood by William Joyce is one of the best book series I've read.

I really would love to see Dreamworks adapting the books into a Netflix series. Rise of the Guardians was good, but these books expanded that world in such a way that I want a series to delve into it.

On this day, in 1928, the groundbreaking "Steamboat Willie" debuted, catapulting Mickey and Minnie Mouse to stardom. Disney celebrates November 18th as Mickey's birthday, and today he and Minnie complete 92 years.

Mickey's status as Disney's corporate mascot must be one of the greatest tragedies of the company, since he became a spokesperson for their worst and most ruthless business practices. Mickey is now a symbol for corporate greed, and to many, nothing more than that.

But to me Mickey means so much more.

Mickey Mouse is the ultimate underdog hero. He's just a small mouse caught in a world too big for his own sake. He's a trickster, a mischievous rascal that refuses to loose his spark, refuses to loose his cheerfulness. He's optimistic, he's full of dreams, he's youthful. He has a heart bigger than himself.

Walt once said:

"When people laugh at Mickey Mouse, it's because he's so human; and that is the secret of his popularity. I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing — that it was all started by a mouse."

Early concept art for Mickey

During PBS' "American Experience: Walt Disney", writer Ron Suskind had this to say about Mickey:

"Mickey's a little bit in your face. Mickey's like, 'Hey! I'm smart, I can do anything, I get into trouble, but I can get out of it... I'm sort of rebellious, you know. I live by my own rules.' He's an adolescent dream, is what he is. Rebelling and making it work, that's Mickey."

Mickey Mouse is and will forever be may favorite Disney character. He, Jaq and Gus are actually the reason why I call myself the "Mouse".

Happy birthday, Mickey!
