Understandable. I'm on like my third dnd character with that exact backstory. I have A Problem

Avatar

I used to think that I really didn't have much of a consistent type in the variety of D&D characters I've played over the years, but then I realized that I do in fact like to play elves with amnesia 😅 that said, my current beautiful problem character used to be the apprentice of the campaign's big villain, has memory loss twice over from two different sources (what the party has taken to calling Arcane Turbo Dementia and they are more correct than they know), and will be very shocked to discover what his old mentor has been up to over the many long years that he's missed. It's a fun setup because the DM and I are the only experienced players in the group, so I helped design the world and the broad strokes of the plot so that we could plant my guy in the party and set up an eventual reveal that will be truly heartbreaking for everyone involved, though perhaps for different reasons. I'm able to help teach the new players how the game works and be the hardest working support wizard ever to Vortex Warp medevac an overcommited ally, and also simultaneously plant clues that my guy conveniently forgets about. It's fantastic enrichment in my enclosure and I'm excited for the new players to develop enough grasp of the game to solve the mystery and have to decide what to do with the fact that their trusted comrade is in fact a former villain, much to his own surprise.

Very cool! I'm one of the less experienced members of my group. Although if I had a nickel for every time the DM decided to make the villain from my backstory the BBEG, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

It's always really fun to tie in backstory to the plot like that. The few times I've run a game I've done my best to do that, even suggesting backstory details so that I can slot them into the story better.

Ironically one of my characters with The Backstory is also a gestalt. They're an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer / Fathomless Warlock whose dad (the setting's equivalent to Cthulhu) created her a la Durge from BG3. All her spells are flavored around psionics and summoning tentacles or aberrations.

We're the crew of a privateer ship, and she ended up as captain due to good charisma, and I'm playing her as loyal to her crew/party. I'm thinking once The Reveal tm happens she'll decide to fight back out for their sake. She may be kinda evil and not care about the world, but she cares for her ship and her crew.

I hope everything goes well with your campaign, I like your character concept!

I'm into Gen 1/2 glitches, and after reviewing the Gold/Silver Decompilation, I think I have a working theory.

For link battles in Gens 1 and 2, the party data gets transferred before the start of the battle and the two games sync their RNG seeds (that's why it has to load for a few seconds). After that, each turn it only exchanges a 4-bit number.

Essentially, it sends over a number between 0 to 15, with 0-3 being the Pokemon's 1st through 4th moves, and 4-9 indicating switching to your 1st through 6th Pokemon. 13-15 are special actions (no action, struggle, and forfeit).

When a Pokemon faints, however, it's assumed that the next action it receives is a switch action. This allows you to switch to party Pokemon #7-#11 and #253-255. Obviously, these don't exist, which means it will send out a Pokemon from unrelated data.

My theory is that some hardware malfunction or glitch caused your Gameboy to enter a loop of sending over some number between 0 and 3. This would cause it to send out a Pokemon whose data comes from the cartridge's ROM.

Doing the math on the hex values and looking it up in the US Gold version ROM data, attempting to send out Pokemon #254 gives us... A Tangela.

It's Level 0 instead of 1 and only knows Wrap and Hydro Pump, but perhaps the details were lost with memory or you played on another version?

As for why it went first, I suspect this is because it just had a wildly high speed stat. A Pokemon's current stats are saved every time they change to avoid needing to recalculate them, so initially they would be unrelated to level and species. Checking the data, it's speed stat would have been 57,423.

After the Tangela faints, it then runs a check to see if every Pokemon in the party is fainted. It would see that your Drowzee is still healthy and thus continue the battle.

Since your Gameboy is stuck sending the same number over and over, it would then tell the other game to send out the exact same Pokemon: a level 0 Tangela.

The reason why it would still be healthy even after fainting is because it comes from the ROM. When switching a Pokemon in, it copies its data from the party slot to a special active slot. Then, when it faints or switches, it copies it back. But because ROM cannot be altered, it would not remember that the Tangela has fainted. Thus, the Tangela is immortal.

Had it continued, they would have fought the exact same Tangela, over and over, until they ran out of PP and Struggled themselves to death. Therefore and thusly I hereby crown you the true winner of that battle. Kinda.

Dream that Lokir from Skyrim became Self Aware

I dreamt last night that I was starting up a new playthrough of Skyrim. As my character was waking up on the cart, my character looked at Lokir. The camera then shifted to Lokir’s perspective where I saw that Lokir was having a Jimmy Neutron-style brain blast where Lokir learned he was a video game character in Skyrim. Then the POV switched back to my character.

Lokir then looked at me/my character and tried to tell me/my character that he knew was a video game character in Skyrim and that I had to listen to him and help him. However, Ralof said that it seemed Lokir hit his head in the ambush and was confused. I selected the option to have my character act oblivious to what is going on. Lokir then said to me “I know you’re playing along. I guess we have to wait until after the execution”. Ralof thought he was talking about meeting in Sovengrade after the execution.

At the execution, Lokir requested he be executed second as his only and final request. The Imperials decided to oblige. My character was then up first. Then was saved by Alduin and then the entire opening level in Helgan played out normally.

After the tutorial was over and my character exited Helgan, Lokir then caught up to me and started talking to me. I selected the option to say “Hey, you tried to get me killed first”. Lokir responded with “Firstly, I just said I wanted to go second. I didn’t say you had to go first. And Secondly, you know as well as me that this is a video game and Alduin would always have saved you so you could go play. The game is literally programmed to do that. But enough of that. I need your help to exit this game and enter the real world. I need you to go the co-ordinates -12, +27”.

I selected the option to say “what are you talking about? What game are you talking about?” Lokir responds in an annoyed tone with “Quit stalling. We don’t have much time. You know what I am talking about. This is Skyrim: ‘Arrow in the Knee’, “Do you enter the Cloud District of course you don’t’ Now can we move past this and help each other here?”

I selected the option to say “But why should I help you? I could just go and play Skyrim”. Lokir responds with “If you help me escape from this game, I’ll tell you when TES6 is coming out”. My character then began running towards those co-ordinates for some reason.
