Look, Kilgharrah has many flaws (like everyone else in this show), but he genuinely loves Merlin. Especially after season 2. And that’s a fact u.u
“Before I do this, you promise me that you will not harm Camelot.” “I think there have been enough bargains, don’t you?”
BBC MERLIN ↪ 2x13 // 2x12
You know, I don't blame Merlin here, he did the right thing (Kilgharrah was imprisoned in a cave where he remained for over 20 years. That's terrible). And i don't blame Kilgharrah. He's been stewing in hatred, rage and grief for over 20 years. He saw his kind wiped out until he was the last, and he was left to rot in darkness, never to see the light of day, by a genocidal madman. Attacking Camelot was an irrational act of anger and revenge.
The fact that Merlin calmed and changed him (Kilgharrah genuinely loved Merlin after S2, imo) is awesome.
Soooo...the Great Purge doesn't make sense.
We all understand the reason of why exactly the great purge happened but the fact that not only the kingdoms wons but actually destroyed and killed almost all the magical creatures and powerful mages doesn't exactly makes sense.
We can assume that once upon on a time both magical and non-magical people coexist in the kingdoms. Which means we can assume that even non-magical people must have used magically made items and weapons. Which knowing Uther's hypocrisy must have been used against the magical people durning the purge.
Now keeping in mind that Uther most probably used surprised attack on most magical people in his kingdom to massacre them, there would still have to be people who fought back and defended themselves and others. There would have to be people who went into hiding before they could caught. There would have to out rage from not just the magical folk from the other kingdoms but from non-magical ones too. The High Priestess, the drangon lords, the druids and other powerful magical folks. The magical creatures like dragon and maybe some other's. All this against a human Army without any special power and they won? And not just won but actually annihilated all but ONE dragon? ONE high Priestess? ONE dragon lord? I can believe that Uther's army killed 3-4 dragons, took down few High Priestess (it was shown again and again that only magic (Merlin) stood any chance against an High Priestess (Nimueh, Morgause, Morgana), let alone a dragon) and killed a lot of magical folk because having magic does not directly make them all into fighter but to nearly wipe the almost the whole magical community?
I know one argument people might make is that most of them went into hiding. The druids were peaceful people so they choose to hide rather then retaliate. But even if some people choose to hide, some had to choose to fight - to revolt against their biased king. And throught the show we saw various magical people trying to get their revenge. So wouldn't the same have happened during the purge too? And that time instead of individual attacking the crown, it would have been proper groups revolting.
Even the thing with Kilgharrah doesn't make sense. Uther used Balinor to call the great dragon lord to Camelot in peace. Okay. He double crossed Balinor and instead attacked the dragon. Okay. He actually managed to capture said dragon and lock him away down in a dungeon with a simple iron shackle to his feet? While the dragon could still breath fire? Balinor only called the dragon to camelot because he thought Uther was calling a truce. So when he realized that wasn't Uther's intention wouldn't he have fought back. Told kilgharrah to fight back. At that time Balinor had no one. Kilgharrah was his only kin so Balinor would have probably put his safety above all, especially since that moment was the second time he was been betrayed. In season 2 Kilgharrah almost destroyed Camelot ALONE lol
In Merlin, apparently, one man's hatred was enough to kill magical creatures without anything.
Merlin + Dragonlord power
My favorite power of the show. So cool. It's so damn powerful and epic. His dragon voice gives me goosebumps every time. It gives me feelings of power :D Colin is so good and talented.
“Merlin is Emrys. He is the most powerful sorcerer who has ever lived. A man destined for greatness.“
I think that people love to hate Kilgharrah too much lol
I know Kilgharrah has MANY flaws, but just remember that he wasn’t the only one who spoke of prophecies and destiny.
I don’t think Kilgharrah was evil, or not worthy of trust. Kilgharrah had an agenda in the first two seasons; he was tired of being in chains. And he was in chains because he was betrayed. Kilgharrah was willing to make peace with Uther, but that tyrant tricked him, not to mention that all of the dragons and dragonlords were slaughtered.
So yes, he had an agenda. He wanted revenge. But after s2? Nah. I’m sure he truly loved and respected Merlin. He was his family. He was on his side.
Everything he said about Morgana and Mordred came to pass. He never lied about it. Even if Merlin didn’t know anything about the prophecy, nothing would have changed.
I don’t blame Kilgharrah if the writers forgot the main plot of the series (Albion and magic legalization).
Imo, the real villain of the series is Uther Pendragon. Not Kilgharrah. It’s all Uther’s fault.
This is possibly my most unpopular opinion within the Merlin fandom lol.
No I agree. I adore Kilgharrah. Shoot me down in flames I have a dragon on my side and I promise you his fire his hotter than yours.
People get frustrated I think because they simply don’t understand how a dragon’s mind works. They don’t think like humans and worry about all the complex emotions that can literally destroy a man from time to time. They’re almost above all that. It’s not that Kilgharrah doesn’t care about Merlin’s feelings, he’s just viewing it all from a different plane of perspective.
It’s a bit like, you don’t expect a pet snake to love you right? They don’t process and offer affection like a pet dog or cat would - but they are grateful to you for feeding them. Sorry, weird analogy but I hope it got the point across.
Dragons to me are the most prophetic and majestic creatures (usually of the end times). I’m a bit biased of course because I absolutely adore them but Kilgharrah was done right as far as I am concerned. He told Merlin what he could about the prophecy about to unfold… remember just like Morgana with her visions, dragons cannot see all the details… but they know the major things that have to unfold.
People rant and rage that Kilgharrah should have been more clear on what Merlin was supposed to do, or to leave him be and give him a break from his destiny - but remember, it’s always Merlin that comes calling for the dragon.
It’s Merlin that demands his help.
And Kilgharrah gives him Excalibur, blessing the blade with his fire.
He rescues Merlin from the Serkets in the Darkling Woods.
He swoops in there and also saves Merlin from the top of that tower. I can’t remember the episode and only vaguely remember the context its been over a year since I watched the series don’t judge.
And finally, he also comes when Merlin comes screaming for his help when Arthur is dying by the lake. He would have come sooner as well I’m sure in that episode but plot reasons Merlin didn’t think of that did he?
In conclusion I love the scaly bastard and I wish more of the fandom would do too. The effects team for BBC Merlin actually depicted a dragon correctly for once anatomically - with four limbs and a set of wings on his back. Most of the time Hollywood screws this up and gives us wyverns instead of TRUE DRAGONS.
For example, Daenerys’ GOT dragons are actually wyverns. So too is Peter Jackson’s Smaug, which I am still upset about to this day. Apparently it’s harder visually to rend a dragon in flight than a wyvern… I think that was the excuse given in a DVD commentary or something anyway.
So, yeah. Dragons are not sympathetic to stupid humans and their need to push the blame on others. They are here to guide and assist, and if you want to blame them for not being clear enough in their instructions, then perhaps the thing to remember is that the choices we make ultimately are our own.
We own them. Or we should do. And all the mistakes as well.
Yeees. And also....this dragon is a badass. When he killed Agravaine’s army like nothing? Damn lol

The way Merlin was written as a dangerous and powerful man in S4 finale - I adored it.
- He enchanted Arthur to get him to leave Camelot, saving his life.
- He calls Kilgharrah who comes and kills the troops of Agravaine.
- He killed Agravaine and his men like nothing (the most badass scene in the series)
-He made up the story with the Excalibur in the stone to make Arthur feel more confident.
-He tracked down everyone in exile and bring them to Arthur overnight.
-He sneaks into Camelot and he nullifies Morgana's powers with a straw doll under her bed.
-Ah, the look of utter fear and horror when Morgana saw Merlin/Emrys walking past her lol
-Later, he uses his magic to blast her back, which causes some stone and rubble to fall on her.
Merlin basically ran the whole show for Arthur and Arthur didn't notice, of course.
Oh, one last thing. He was fabulous:
Merlin's immortality is a curse.
He watched everyone he loved die, not only Arthur. Gwen, Gaius, Kilgharrah, his mother, the Knights. All of them.
What the hell......
Also, one thing that I feel really wasn’t wrapped up well at the end was what happened to Aithusa. It was clear that Kilgharrah was nearing the end of his life, but Aithusa was still young and had lost Morgana. I think that she would have returned to Merlin and been his companion for a long time; after all he was the last Dragon Lord.
I don't want to believe that Merlin is alone.
For five years we had been told that Arthur Pendragon and Merlin are destined to unite the warring kingdoms of Albion and bring magic back to the realm.
So...what the hell happened?
In the finale the Dragon states that Arthur has already built what he was destined to achieve.
Really? How? Why? So, is the magic allowed after Arthur's death? :/
Gwen seemed to have figured out that Merlin had magic, and after that she said she was pleased that Arthur was in Merlin's hands. So, Gwen allowed magic after Arthur's death?
But i thought it was Arthur and Merlin's destiny :/ Not Gwen :/ Why Arthur should be the "Once and future king"? I don't understand.....
Also, does Merlin ever return to Camelot after Arthur's death to serve and share grief at Gwen's side?
I can not believe that he has abandoned Gwen and Gaius.....
It all just felt so... incomplete and disappointing. The WHOLE series is about Merlin’s destiny (not Gwen, again) being to protect Arthur and basically building a kingdom alongside Arthur where magic is permitted. And the last episode, where we get hope that that’s gonna happen when Merlin finally tells Arthur about his magic, they just snatch it away from us by killing Arthur and not even before making magic legal. You can’t just hype the audience up for saying how Arthur will change everything once he becomes king and then not do it...
And yet, as i have already said, the Dragon states that Arthur has already built what he was destined to achieve. Mh, dear writers.....SHOW, DON'T TELL.
I also believe Aithusa is still alive in the modern days, with Merlin. He's not alone! I want to believe this.
