(Brooken Week is always the week of 10/10)
…
(Gwevin Week is always the week of 11/11)
It’s almost a year in advance, but the dates for Gwevin week 2021 have been announced.
Am I the only one that feels like Kevin crushing on Gwen comes out of no where?
Nothing against the ship itself I just feel like it happens to quick.
I’ve never cared for love at first sight tropes though. So it’s probably just me.
My mutishpper ass is probably going to ship them anyway but it just doesn’t feel well paced shoe wise to me
This is one of the most commonly stated complaints about the ship actually, and it’s a very valid one. Especially considering that prior to that moment when they run into each other as teens, they were very clear-cut enemies. There is no build up to their feelings, just a sudden and electric attachment.
Like most of the franchise, it’s bad writing.
But, I do have a headcanon to offer as possible explanation:
Kevin’s power is absorption. Both matter and energy. Gwen is made of energy. What Kevin is interpreting as attraction is actually just hunger. His body identifies Gwen as food and desires her in that capacity. Kevin, being half-earthling and disconnected from his alien heritage misinterprets his initial attraction to her as romantic instead.
As they continue to work together on the same team. Fighting aliens, saving the world, the family business, Kevin’s Osmosian instincts begin to recognize and see her as a member of the pack instead of prey, and she shifts from “food” to “partner” to “potential mate”. Kevin’s conscious mind just interprets all of this as the natural progression of a romantic attachment and doesn’t realize anything weird is going on with himself at all.
That explain’s Kevin’s half of the sudden and immediate attraction.
As for Gwen’s side... I mean... the narrative set Kevin up as the only significant man in her life that she’s not genetically related to, so... what’s a girl to do?
Plus he’s tall.
Submission for Gwevin Week Day 6 - "Camping"
Kevin is back from being Kevin 11,000 and he is taking Devlin and Gwendolyn camping. Kevin wants Devlin to get used to having Gwen around before they tell him the truth about where he came from. Gwen thinks the whole thing is just hilarious and wonderful.

Submission for Gwevin Week Day 5, "Passion".
Gwen is stressing over her mid-term papers and had writer's block. Hopefully Kevin (and his latest mutation with tentacles) can help her clear her mind.

Submission for Day 4 of Gwevin Week, "Deception".
Kevin Levin is a private investigator hired to recover some stolen property.
I started off trying really hard on this one, but about halfway through I started to get really, really, really, really, really, really, really really, really really frustrated with the 1940s slang and just wanted it to end.
So I ended it. Abruptly.
Overall, not my best work, but might be fun if you give it a chance?

Gwen would like to know why Kevin is putting vodka in their water filter.

Gwevin Week Day 2 - “Warrant”
Now that Kevin's back he wants to return to his old job as being a Magister ranked Plumber again. There’s just a small matter of the outstanding warrant for the arrest of Kevin 11000 that needs to be sorted out.

Submission for Day 1 of Gwevin Week, "Crash".
Something falls to Earth. Gwen is the one who investigates.

still refusing to ever believe gwen is not devlin’s mom. also indulging in my headcanon that devlin becomes hyperfixated on collecting my littlest pet shop figures and gwen supports him a lot uwu
Having trouble coming up with something for Gwevin Week day 2 “Warrant”. Like, you’d think it’d be obvious. Kevin’s a criminal. There’s gotta be a dozen warrants out for his arrest.
Now let’s get Gwen involved and turn that into a one-shot.
Moral of the story. Pick your battles.

One of the reason I love about Kevin is that he actually learns and RETAINS the lessons he learns.
There’s another episode where Kevin takes a book from Gwen’s house and puts it in his garage because it was a dangerous magic book and thought it wasn’t safe just out of her desk where she had it. The magic book is inevitably stolen and Gwen angrily explains to Kevin that her whole house is magically warded and shielded and it probably the safest place in all of Bellwood. So, yes, the book was perfectly safe out on her desk. Until someone with access to her house -Kevin- took it out.
We never see Kevin move or even touch any of Gwen’s magic stuff without clearing it with her first after that. In the whole series. Not even in Omniverse.
Unlike other cartoon characters, Kevin retains the lessons he learns and doesn’t make the same mistake twice.
Except absorbing the Omnitix. He does that one at least once per season.
I think it would have been cool to have an episode or 2 where the trio exchange powers. Like Ben gets anodites powers, kevin gets the omnitrix and gwen gets the osmosian powers.
Kevin would find it a little difficult in the beginning but would eventually get the hang of it since he has had experience with being those aliens before *ahem*
Gwen would pick it up pretty quick too considering she's smart. We all know she picked up how to use the omnitrix when she got it in that episode from ben 10 classic.
Heck she could even get better at them than kevin when she figures out how to use other forms of matter and energy like sound energy, heat energy, absorb water , fire ( i remembr seeing a post on this topic though a while back on how powerful Kevin's powers really are. Kevin could learn these things and probably will eventually but gwen seems like the type who thinks ahead and likes to know as much as she can about things so it would make sense that she would figure out the tricks of osmosian powers before kevin)
Ben would just run around confused and in between enemies screaming "SHIELD! SHEILD! SHEILD! " while crazily flailing his hands around cuz well ,its Ben.
I love this idea 100% and would have greatly preferred it to the crappy “Gwen and Kevin keep getting transformed into Ben’s aliens” episode we did get. At the end of that episode, Gwen asks Ben if he even tried to use either of their powers and Ben confesses that the idea didn’t even occur to him. It was not a true power-swap, it was just frustrating.
But a real power swap would be so cool!
And I agree 100% that Gwen would be an absolute BOSS at using everyone’s powers and she would learn them and master them really quick. Gwen is just too intelligent, analytical, and intuitive not to pick up a new power and start mastering it like riding a bike. Remember how quickly she picked up and started learning magic in the OS? And that was before she had the knowledge and foundation she has now. Gwen would be amazing with whatever power she has.
And it would be so cute to see Kevin wielding mana. He’s so much of a dork, you know he’d make up something similar to his own Lantern Corps rhyme. And he’d get to feel what power and mana are really like without having to worry about going insane. I also feel like, with his history of trying to control himself, Kevin would also pick up how to use a lot of power fairly quickly because he’s already spent most of his life trying to control his own powers. His mental strength has to be better than the vast majority of the fandom gives him credit. Kevin’s not as intuitive as Gwen, so he probably wouldn’t learn his new powers as fast as she would hers. But there’s no doubt in my mind that Kevin would master mana.
Loved this whole episode. <3
Gosh, I have so much to say about just this little clip!
Where to being...
Kevin is smart. He’s always been smart. Even when he was 11 and kind, sorta, completely off his nut. He knew exactly how to manipulate Ben almost immediately after meeting him. He came up with his own scheme to ruin Ben’s aliens’ reputations, he was a clever strategist when he and Ben were tethered together on that gladiator ship, he bargained with Vilgax and struck an alliance with an alien warrior who was 100x older than him. And that was all just in the OS, when he was still a small child.
Kevin is very smart.
Kevin does not need formal school.
But, in our society, not have a high school degree, or an equivalency shuts a lot of doors and can be a hinderance. Gwen understands this and she wants Kevin to succeed, so she offered to help him to get his GED. Kevin realizes that this is important to Gwen and Gwen is important to him, so he’s willing to do what he needs to do. Here in this scene, he’s not agreeing to get his GED for himself. He can just go into space any time he wants and no one cares if you never went to high school in space. But he’s not living in space, he’s living on Earth where his girlfriend lives and his girlfriend thinks he should get a GED. So he agrees.
How supportive they are of each other and how willing to understand each other’s feelings and work together is one of the reasons I love the Gwevin ship so much!
But, wait, I have more to say about this clip!
Another point in Alien Force and Ultimate Alien that I will never get over is Gwen’s mother, Natalie.
In this clip, we here her over the phone saying the phrases, “I always knew the Tennysons were a little weird, but...” and “...this is family. More importantly, it’s my family!”
Natalie strikes me as the kind of woman who places a lot of importance on traditions and appearances, and she probably came from a family that puts a lot of importance on tradition and appearances. We know Gwen’s dad is a lawyer (she mentions it in an episode once), and that her parents have more money than Ben’s. Gwen attends private school, and her family lives in a larger house than Ben’s does. So, Natalie probably married Frank more for his money and/or social status. “Rich white lawyer man”.
Natalie probably did not realize she was signing up for aliens and superpowers when she got married.
At another point in this same episode, Natalie makes a comment to Gwen, along the lines of “polite people don’t glow in the dark.” Which, in and of itself is a shitty thing to say in a world where there are more than one race that literally does glow in the dark and is something they can’t help.
But when Gwen, Natalie own daughter, reminds her “I glow in the dark.”
Natalie’s only response is, “Not around me.”
Which says to me that Natalie resents her own children to an extent. Maybe not consciously. They are her children after all. But it does seem very clear that Natalie’s love of her children is conditional on their appearance of being “normal”.
I honestly wish the show had delved deeper into that detail.
Sandra seemed so chill and accepting of the Tennyson weirdness. Aliens, and superpowers, and such. Gwen goes full alien and grown fifteen feet all to curb-stomp Zombozo and crew, and Sanda gets her a cotton candy.
Gwen doesn’t even go alien around her mother at all (that we see) and Natalie’s ready to get pissed at her at the drop of a hat.
A few days ago I made a post suggesting we hold Brooken and Gwevin shipping weeks for the Ben 10 fandom. I got a lot of positive feedback about the idea and a lot of people interested in participating in one or both. So, I made a side blog for it.
Please follow @brooken-gwevin-weeks
Prompts for Brooken Week will be going up within the next few days. Gwevin Week prompts will be up nearer the middle of October.
I do recommend following the blog as I will not be reflagging all the content to my main.
Hey, Ben 10 fandom, we should make some semi-official shipping weeks for our favorite ships. I’m already a participants of Tim/Kon Week in the DC fandom, and Fakiru Week in the Princess Tutu fandom. We should have a Brooken (Ben/Rook) Week, and a Gwevin (Gwen/Kevin) Week.
I suggest the week of October 10th for Brooken (10/10), and week of November 11th for Gwevin (11/11).
Who’s with me!?
EDIT: 10/10 this year falls on a Sunday, so Brooken Week would be Oct. 4-10, 11/11 is a Wednesday, so Gwevin Week would be Nov. 8-14
