An app that organises your time for you?!?!?

The app’s called Timeful and basically it organises your time for you. All you need to do is put in what you need to do by when, how long you think it will take you and when you’d prefer to do it (morning, afternoon, evening), and then the app schedules a time for you.

If you tell the app that you’re going out with friends from 6pm to 9pm tomorrow night then it’ll reschedule everything to suit that. Input your sleep times and your most productive times and it’ll reschedule everything to suit those too.

You can organise your to-do’s into one of six different colours, which helps you balance your life (like at the moment, I see too much green, which probably means I need to have some more “wellbeing” stuff on there).

(sidenote: I do the IB and I’m thinking of assigning a colour for Creativity, Action and Service, so I make sure I’m doing a bit of each every now and then.)

AND NOT ONLY IS IT FREE BUT IT’S ALSO REALLY PRETTY TOO.

SO GO DOWNLOAD IT OFF THE APP STORE RIGHT NOW.

Study tip:

Use 2 notebooks when taking notes: one for in class and one for copying the notes at home. The one in class, make it messy with add-ins, subtext, etc etc! Take down as much info as you can. Then, after class, take those messy, hard-to-read notes and re-copy them into your home notebook. These are the ones you study off of so make them neat and clear to understand!

4 Legal Ways To Get Free Textbooks.

1. Open Culture:  Not a large a selection, but high quality texts. If you just want to skim a book to brush up on a course you took in ninth grade, download one of these. I have yet to be disappointed.

2. Book Boon: Provides free college-level textbooks in a PDF format. Probably the widest range of subjects on the web. The site is also pretty.

3. Flat World Knowledge: The worlds largest publisher of free and open college textbooks. Humanitie texts are particularly difficult to come by, this site has a great selection in all disciplines.

4. Textbook Revolution:  Some of the books are PDF files, others are viewable online as e-books, or some are simply web sites containing course or multimedia content.

5. Library Pirate: I’ve always had an addiction to torrent based pirating. When this site opened a few months ago, I went a little overboard. After dropping two hundred on a paperback spanish textbook, I downloaded the ebook version illegally. I also got a great Psyc text i’m obsessed with.  It will be interesting to see how this site grows- they already have a great selection.

College bookstores completely rip off their students, so ALWAYS reblog free textbooks!

1. Wally (iPhone, iPad) I personally love this app cause it’s easy to use, beautiful to look at, keeps my receipts and isn’t cluttered with useless features. You can divide them into various categories/subcategories, add in your income, see your balance as well as see your spending habits graphed into beautiful pie charts. 2. 30/30 (iPhone, iPad) This app is mostly intended for study sessions but I use it to keep track of routines, particularly for housework. I tend to procrastinate and dilly-dally when doing laundry/dishes/etc and sometimes I just need to GET IT DONE. You can allot how much time you want to spend, and save these lists/routines for future use.  3. IFTTT (iPhone, iPad) IFTTT stands for If This, Then That and you can use it for ANYTHING. Statements are called “recipes” and allow for a more productive use of your time by eliminating routine actions. I currently use “If raining tomorrow, then remind me today to bring an umbrella” and “If tagged in Facebook photo, then save in iOS Photos”. Alternatively, you can use it to automatically transfer tagged screenshots/notes/etc to dropbox/google drive/etc.  4. Evernote (iPhone, iPad, Macbook) I think everyone knows what Evernote is. It has a ton of features including journals, notes, lists, whatever you want. I use it to keep my 2015 goals and lists (books to read, movies to watch, music to get, gift ideas, recipes to try and my bucket list). How does it make me a better student? I no longer waste free time thinking about what to watch, where to eat, or things to do. I get more things done that I’ve always wanted to do and can therefore appreciate when it’s time to get back to work. 5. Grades 3 (iPhone) Also self-explanatory! It helps you keep track of how each of your evaluations are affecting your final mark. Sometimes it’s hard to see how a 5% quiz improves/ruins your grade. I found myself 10X more motivated after using this app cause you can see just how much better you can do. 6. Inkflow Visual Notebook (iPad) I just recently discovered this and it is THE BEST. As a human bio major in my undergrad, I drew out flowcharts ALL THE TIME. The problem was that I’d run out of space or need to add a new molecule in between, and my OCD would hit the fan. This app allows you to take a photo of your work, but only scans the pencil/pen part, and therefore seamlessly fits in with the rest of your document. You can then erase, select, add and move around different components of the flowchart/note/picture/etc. 7. Flashcards+ (iPhone, iPad, Macbook, Windows) This is pretty self-explanatory! What I liked about this is that I was able to test myself while walking to places in the freezing -30 degrees Celsius weather in Toronto (which I wouldn’t be able to do with physical flashcards). Not to mention it saves so much time and paper, and you can easily share them with others. 8. Duolingo (iPhone, iPad) Learning a new language keeps your head sharp and resume competitive for this increasingly globalized world. I’m currently learning German and this app makes it super easy and fun! I started last week doing 15 minutes every day and I have already had a full (simple) conversation with my German friend - it’s that good! 9. Circle of 6 (iPhone) As newly independent adults, we need to organize our SAFETY. This app allows you to choose 6 people to send an emergency text to with your details and location at the click of a button (as well as an “I’m okay but thanks” message once the crisis is averted). 10. SAM (iPhone, iPad) If you’ve ever had anxiety attacks, you’ll understand how much time an attack eats up when you’re trying to be your most productive self. It has a toolbox of methods to calm you down and provides explanations for what you’re feeling. You can even rate each method so you know what works for you.

11. Dashlane (iPhone, iPad, Macbook, Windows) With all the different social media accounts, email accounts (going on my 4th one now that I’m a Masters student at a new university!), online shopping accounts, bank accounts, etc - it starts to get hard to keep track of all your usernames/passwords AND have strong, individual passwords for all of them. This helps keep track and allows the ability to change ALL your passwords at once if something were to happen to your various accounts.

12. Google Drive (iPhone, iPad, Macbook, Android, Windows) I can spend a whole blog post talking about this one. I have 100% of my documents saved on google drive on my desktop. This means I have 100% of my documents on my phone, ipad and .. anywhere with an internet connection. You won’t have to lug around a big laptop all the time, AND you can have the peace of mind knowing you have access to important information from literally anywhere in the world. And a bonus - it doesn’t take up any space (except in the cloud!). 13. Zotero (Macbook, Windows) I love doing research papers but I absolutely hate having to keep track of everything I’ve read. This app allows you to create folders to keep citations for each of your individual reports. Once you’re done, just choose your referencing method and it creates all your bibliography for you at the click of a button!

14. Self Control (Macbook, Windows) Need to study online but keep feeling tempted to go on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Youtube, etc? Put them all on a “Blacklist” on this Self Control app and prevent yourself from being able to access them for a certain amount of time. Even if you delete the app, you still can’t get on those sites until your time is up. LIFE SAVER.

Hopefully these tips have helped you in some way. I’d love to hear about other useful apps! The trick is to have apps that satisfy more than one function, so that you don’t clutter up your devices.

Efficiently,

The Organized Minimalist

DEAR RESEARCHERS OF TUMBLR

You know what’s awesome?  Research.  You know what’s not awesome?  Not being able to get access to research because it’s stuck behind a paywall and you don’t belong to an institution/your institution doesn’t subscribe to that particular journal.

FEAR NOT.

Here is a list of free, open access materials on a variety of subjects.  Feel free to add if you like!

GO FORTH AND LEARN SHIT, MY FRIENDS.

Directory of Open Access Journals- A compendium of over 9000 journals from 133 countries, multilingual and multidisciplinary.

Directory of Open Access Books- Like the above, but for ebooks.  Also multidisciplinary.

Ubiquity Press- Journals covering archaeology, comics scholarship, museum studies, psychology, history, international development, and more.  Also publishes open access ebooks on a wide variety of subjects.

Europeana-  Digital library about the history and culture of Europe.

Digital Public Library of America- American history, culture, economics, SO MUCH AMERICA.

Internet Archive- In addition to books, they have music and videos, too.  Free!  And legal!  They also have the Wayback Machine, which lets you see webpages as they looked at a particular time.

College and Research Libraries- Library science and information studies.  Because that’s what I do.

Library of Congress Digital Collections- American history and culture, historic newspapers, sound recordings, photographs, and a ton of other neat stuff.

LSE Digital Library- London history, women’s history.

Wiley Open Access- Science things!  Neurology, medicine, chemistry, ecology, engineering, food science, biology, psychology, veterinary medicine.

SpringerOpen-  Mainly STEM journals, looooong list.

Elsevier Open Access-  Elsevier’s kind of the devil but you might as well take advantage of this.  Mainly STEM, also a linguistics journal and a medical journal in Spanish.

Also, remember — there is a wide world of researchers out there, most of whom don’t give two figs about paywalls. Let people know what you’re having trouble accessing, and you’d be surprised how quickly a copy will find its way to your inbox. And if you do belong to an institution with a library, check out their interlibrary loan system, which is a more official way of getting things from behind a paywall at no cost to you.

Hello! A lot of you have been asking me where and how I’ve learn multiple languages and well, after a few hours of digging through my browser history and bookmarks, I was able to collect all of these resources. I have personally used all of these, so I can assure you they are useful! If there is something wrong with a website or a link, please let me know. Also, if you have any questions or if you want a learning buddy, my ask box is open. (I speak English and Spanish. I’m learning Korean, German, Japanese, Chinese, Portuguese, Italian, and Esperanto)

Note: Learning a new language requires a lot of dedication, more than you actually think! Especially if you’re learning multiple languages at the same time. It isn’t impossible, but it will take time. And by time I mean months and/or years! So please, be patient. Take your time. Don’t rush. Keep in mind that you will mess up and that’s okay. Practice as much as you can. Practice out loud. Talk to yourself if you can. It doesn’t matter if people think you’re crazy. They won’t be thinking the same when you become a polyglot, so don’t mind them. This is for you and your future.

Get started:

Multiple languages, one website

That’s it. That’s all I have right now. I’ll try to search for more and will keep updating this list! If you have a request for a specific language, just send me an ask. Have fun and good luck!

Things I Wish I Knew Before College

1. Leave your door open. If your door doesn’t stay open, find a way to open it. I know almost no one on my floor and I regret that.

2. The work is a lot different from high school. Make sure you have a study system that works.

3. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

4.  I have a lot of anxiety and it is hard for me to meet people. That’s why I try to do one thing everyday that scares me like eating in the dining hall alone or sitting in a coffee shop for a few hours. I wish I had started this earlier because I can already feel it helping.

5. No one knows what the fuck they are doing with their life. Don’t feel pressure to figure out your life your freshman year.

6. No one gives a fuck if you eat by yourself in the dining hall.

7. Join as many clubs as possible, even if you don’t think you are interested in the club. I joined a couple just because the people seemed cool.

8. Don’t rely on your roommate to make you friends.

9. Bring more storage. If you think you have enough, you don’t.

10. Call your parents. They miss you. Especially call them if you are the first to go to college because they are not used to this.

11. Don’t spend all your money on the sims. Especially before midterms.

Add on some more if you have any!

If you have any type of disability (mental or physical) register with the students with disabilities office. Even if you don’t think you need it, they can provide all sorts of accommodation. It’s nice to have.

A little tip for parents with children in school (or for children in school to show their parents)

My mom gave me and my sister two days every semester that she called “mental health days.”

Those were days, that for ANY reason, and without having to tell my mom the reason, we could skip the day of school. We’d just tell her we were taking a mental health day and she’d call the school and let them know we were not coming in.

#1 This helped keep our grades up by lowering our stress levels. I never got a C in any grade school class. The majority of my classes I received A’s. I also took 4 AP classes and they were not weighted. Trust me, it made a difference.

#2 I never felt the need to skip school. I knew if I ever wanted to or needed to my mom would help me.

Your kids are young and need time to recover. They need some days where they can do nothing but stay in bed for no reason. They need their own space where their privacy is respected. It will make a huge difference.

PSA

Guysss dont do the thing when writing an essay you write random words after a paragraph and then turn them white to increase word count!!! My college english teacher has been catching people left and right trying this because his computer screen formats the paper differently so he can see where the added words are, and he also turns the papers into audio with some program and he can hear all of the words you turned white. Its considered cheating and some of these students are in BIG trouble! Please just turn words like don’t, couldnt and didn’t ect into do not, could not and did not. It increases your word count and is not something that will get you in trouble!

Also a MAJORITY of the tips on tumblr for essays are bullshit if you’re turning a paper in electronically as anything other than a PDF.

Making your periods a font size larger? Not gonna work if your teacher turns all the font the same size to check. Invisible words? See above. Most colleges and universities have programs that SPECIFICALLY are made to counter shit like this, so unless you’re handing in a paper in person or in a PDF just do your fucking work.
