10 Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing

Need some creative ways to give your characters a real fight for survival? Here are 10 ideas:

1. Punctured Artery

A puncture to major arteries like the femoral artery (thigh), the carotid artery (neck), or radial artery (arm) can cause rapid blood loss. It starts off with a sharp pain, weakness, lightheadedness and eventually can lead to hypovolemic shock. Requires urgent medical attention.

2. Punctured Eye Socket

A punctured eye socket will cause blood vessel damage leading to internal bleeding. I would use this for non-combat characters trying to get away. The eyes are an easy weak spot + you don’t need much strength to cause a critical injury/puncture. Also good for a protag's tragic backstory.

3. Torn Achilles Tendon

A torn Achilles tendon can result in severe bleeding if nearby arteries or veins are damaged. Your character will be forced to hobble away as pain causes their foot to swell and bruise. Plus, you can easily adjust the pain levels per your scene, from swift cuts to explosive jumps.

4. Neck Hyperextension (Hangman’s Fracture)

This injury will fracture the C2 vertebra and can lead to spinal cord damage, paralysis or sudden death. This isn’t a light injury your character can come back from, so I would suggest using it only when you’re aiming for death.

5. Pierced Lung

A punctured lung will lead to a pneumothorax where air escapes into the chest cavity, collapsing the lung. Characters with this injury may have difficulty breathing, chest pain, and a cough that produces frothy blood (all the dramatics you need).

6. Severe Concussion

A severe concussion will lead to confusion, vomiting, immobility and memory loss. More dangerously, brain swelling, internal bleeding and damaged brain tissue. Plus, it has a long recovery period.

7. Shattered Pelvis

If you need something severe that restricts mobility but also causes severe pain then this is perfect! Involves signs of shock, internal bleeding, numbness, swelling—really a lot of things. Can occur if OC falls from a high place, hit repeatedly, car accident, etc.

8. Internal Bleeding from Blunt Force Trauma

I like using this when you need something subtle since it doesn't show immediate symptoms. Over time, they will feel weak, cold, nauseous, and intense pain. Perfect if you want that 'everyone made it out then suddenly someone collapses' moment.

9. Intestinal Perforation

A sharp blow or penetrating wound can cause a tear in the intestines, leaking bacteria into the body cavity, then peritonitis. It can go from small stomach pain to near death pretty quickly. Without prompt medical care, sepsis can set in, causing organ failure and death.

10. Cut to the Jugular

If you need something more visibly dramatic then go with the classic cut to the jugular. A warm rush of blood will pour out, and blood would spurt with every heartbeat. Causes panic, choking, and internal bleeding too. All the blood and gore you need.

This is a quick, brief list of ideas to provide writers inspiration. Since it is a shorter blog, I have not covered the injuries in detail. Remember the worse the injury the more likely your character is to die (so be realistic folks). Happy writing! :)

10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing

While lethal injuries often take center stage, non-lethal injuries can create lasting effects on characters, shaping their journeys in unique ways. If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain during a scene, here are some ideas:

  1. Sprained Ankle
  • A common injury that can severely limit mobility, forcing characters to adapt their plans and experience frustration as they navigate their environment.
  1. Rib Contusion
  • A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult and create tension, especially during action scenes, where every breath becomes a reminder of vulnerability.
  1. Concussion
  • This brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a character’s judgment and creating a sense of unpredictability in their actions.
  1. Fractured Finger
  • A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills, causing frustration and emphasizing a character’s dependence on their hands.
  1. Road Rash
  • The raw, painful skin resulting from a fall can symbolize struggle and endurance, highlighting a character's resilience in the face of physical hardship.
  1. Shoulder Dislocation
  • This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation.
  1. Deep Laceration
  • A cut that requires stitches can evoke visceral imagery and tension, especially if the character has to navigate their surroundings while in pain.
  1. Burns
  • Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma, serving as a physical reminder of a character’s past mistakes or battles.
  1. Pulled Muscle
  • This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, providing an opportunity for characters to experience frustration or the need to lean on others for support.
  1. Tendonitis
  • Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted, highlighting their struggle to adapt and overcome.

if you're feeling powerless right now—and god knows I am—here's a reminder you can donate to the National Network of Abortion Funds, the Trans Law Center, Gaza Soup Kitchen, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund, and hundreds of other charities that will work to mitigate the damage that has been and will continue to be inflicted

life continues. we still have the capacity to do good, important work. that matters

If you're a writer you're supposed to write a lot of bullshit. It's part of the gig. You have to write a lot of absolute garbage in order to get to the good bits. Every once in a while you'll be like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time writing bullshit," but that's dumb. That's exactly the same as an Olympic runner being like "Oh, I wish I hadn't wasted all that time running all those practice laps"

Anonymous asked:

that enneagram post is SO detailed, and beautifully set out! I'm curious where you would place mianmian (if there's enough about her in canon, sorry qin su ;_;)! I'd be tempted to place her with the 1s just based on what was in your post but that's literally the extent of my knowledge about it so very curious what you think!

hmmm, Mianmian is a tough one as we really don't see that much of her in canon. so, what can we conclude from what we do see of her?

when we see her at ease (bantering with WWX in the inn, during the lantern ceremony in Gusu, and later when she meets Wangxian again with her family) she is cheerful and playful, and socially quick-witted. when we see her with Zixuan, it's clear that she is very politically savvy, and intensely, fiercely loyal. in the xuanwu cave she is clearly deeply rattled by her own sect brothers turning on her, and seems to strongly value Zixuan and the others protecting and standing up for her. during the Soup Incident she is not afraid to tell Zixuan that he's wrong - and yet she still bodily throws herself between him and WWX's punch. one of her most defining character moments is when she speaks out against the widespread condemnation of WWX and actually leaves the Jin sect over it, so clearly justice and truth are vitally important to her, and unlike characters like Zixuan or Lan Xichen, who hold great concern about rocking the political boat so do not speak up, she is absolutely unwilling to compromise her morals, despite the consequences.

to summarise: she is naturally cheerful and charismatic, fiercely loyal to her friends, and whilst she clearly struggles with fear and danger, when push comes to shove she values her morals higher than her own personal safety.

based on this, I would say on instinct that Mianmian could be a type 6 (like Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing). I would say 6 over 1, as type 1s often have issues with repression, resistance, and aggression (think Zixuan, Wangji, Song Lan) and will often become more reserved to try and "keep themselves in check" - I don't feel like, from what we see of her, that Mianmian has any of those issues.

the basic fear of type 6 is not having security and support. I can see that as being part of why she has such a close relationship with Zixuan - who gives her both - when she lives in a sect as toxic for women as the Jin sect. it is also why leaving the sect to strike out on her own is such a powerful statement... she has fucking snapped, baybee!! enough is enough!!! it serves as a really nice narrative parallel to WWX rescuing the Wen remnants; he is a 6, and it is a character defining moment for him to refuse to be complicit any longer, and forsake any security he once had with the Jiangs in order to follow his morals. it seems very much like she decides to make that same choice.

I would finish up what has turned into a fucking essay (whoops) with a quote directly from here about type 6:

We have named personality type Six The Loyalist because, of all the personality types, Sixes are the most loyal to their friends and to their beliefs. They will “go down with the ship” and hang on to relationships of all kinds far longer than most other types. Sixes are also loyal to ideas, systems, and beliefs—even to the belief that all ideas or authorities should be questioned or defied. Indeed, not all Sixes go along with the “status quo”: their beliefs may be rebellious and anti-authoritarian, even revolutionary. In any case, they will typically fight for their beliefs more fiercely than they will fight for themselves, and they will defend their community or family more tenaciously than they will defend themselves.

OK let Jiang Cheng and Wen Qing have a political marriage of convenience and  slowburn fall in love as they desperately try to save their people and are slowly forced via associating with their brothers to grimly take on saving everyone else as well.

also is anyone else charmed but a little alarmed by how all the Yunmeng Siblings go for people who are a combination of

  • Powerful
  • Competent
  • Share their values BUT
  • Are initially kind of mean to and/or dismissive of them
  • but in a way where if said powerful/competent/mean people DID choose them then they’d turn that power and competence to protecting them & theirs so like. the problem is can you be good/charming/worthy enough to earn that.
  • oh babies.

#this got me thinking about how unfazed wwx was by lwj being mean to him though. like i think it really didn’t register for him that much?#like sure he wanted to get a rise out of lwj bc he thought it was funny but also#being somebody’s punching bag isn’t new to him. being lashed out at for minor faults isn’t new to him#compared to madam yu and what he was dealing with on the streets this IS really just play fighting#and like. living in an environment where he can be punished at any time for any arbitrary reason (he breathed wrong in yzy’s presence)#he has two options: become incredibly meek and try to avoid punishment by never doing anything#or get used to punishment and learn how to endure it because it is going to happen and there’s nothing he can do about it.#and clearly he has gone with the second option. and that’s what he’s doing in cloud recesses too.#these 3k rules are so arbitrary and numerous and against his nature. there’s no way he’s not going to get punished#so there’s no reason for him to try particularly hard not to get in trouble.#and not only does lwj never actually hurt him he also protects him on occasion (e.g. the cold pool cave)#so in wwx’s mind that’s like. best friend material.#(the forehead ribbon is to wwx as a friendship bracelet is to a kid at summer camp)#the untamed#ANYWAY this post was about jiang cheng and wen qing and that part is ALSO galaxy brain#i would love to see them begrudgingly getting roped into supporting their brothers’ grand Causes for Justice#while they’re both like ‘i need to focus on my own goddamn family who the fuck are all these orphans’#well they’re YOUR orphans now. surprise!!! tags via @howdydowdy

Yes! And I think Jiang Cheng has kind of conditioned him to hear “your behaviour is APPALLING and you should be EMBARRASSED” as “I want to come play with you but I’m dutiful and repressed so you’re going to have to try a little harder to make me break. We’re going to have so much fun once you finally win me over!” There are people like Madam Yu and LQR who can’t be won over anyway and will always be looking for ways he’s a fuckup; people like JFM and Yanli who find him inherently delightful; and people who can be tormented into understanding his charms.

Really my fave WangNingXian dynamic is Lan Wangji looking at Wen Ning and going “He is literally a part of Wei Ying, a physical manifestation of his soul, as essential and inextricable as his shadow. They share a bond totally unlike the bond I myself share with Wei Ying. They are so completely intertwined, if I am to love everything that is Wei Ying, I must love Wen Ning as well.” And Wen Ning looking at Lan Wangji and going “He is literally a part of Wei Wuxian, a physical manifestation of his heart, as essential and inextricable as the breath in his lungs. They share a bond totally unlike the bond I myself share with Wei Wuxian. They are so completely intertwined, if I am to love everything that is We Wuxian, I must love Lan Wangji as well.”

And then they both fucking commit to that.

I know Nie ZongHui did not exist in the novel and therefore did not exist in CQL and he only made his first appearance in Fatal Journey

But I can’t believe CQL kept a badass like Nie ZongHui off screen! All those flashback episodes and no Nie ZongHui!? A bold yet frankly poor move! A Nie MingJue and Nie ZongHui team-up are taking out the Wen, Meng Yao, and the Yin Iron on that surprise attack like there is no chance for failure when there are no evil, possessive spirits in sight and your right-hand man is carrying two sabers (two sabers!)

sweet-hobgoblin bought me a kofi and asked me to do an enneagram overview on ChengQing, so here we go…

Both types 6 and 8 have a somewhat defensive view of the world - that life is unpredictable and people are untrustworthy, so they must protect themselves and those they love - and both struggle with trust issues, but the moment they are able to let their guard down with each other, a very strong bond can be formed. They both share a lot of the same vales, believing in hard work, keeping their word, unflinching loyalty, and building a more safe and secure community for the people they care about.

Type 6s bring warmth and empathy, though Wen Qing is a 6wing5, so she is more measured and introspective than a cheerful 6wing7 (see: Wei Wuxian), with a kind of practicality and analytical focus that the type 8 admires. Type 8s bring decisiveness and leadership skills, as well as an ability to face and endure challenges that inspires loyalty in 6s.

lots of people responded to my 3zun enneagram post saying they’d be interested in seeing more, so I made a sort of masterpost of the main characters! I am working on a post with a bunch of ships so watch this space for them. all future posts on this will be tagged #untamedenneagram. I stuck with the main adult characters because it’s pointless to try and type a character if you don’t know enough about them, and I have specifically avoided the Juniors, because enneagram is not recommended for anyone that young; kids and teenagers are still growing up and figuring out who they are, which means that naturally their personalities are likely to change as they mature. if people are really desperate to see the Juniors then I could maybe do a post where I make reeeeaal vague estimations on what their adult selves might be typed as.

disclaimer: these are just my opinions based on my interpretations of the characters - if you disagree, feel free to make your own post discussing your personal thoughts, but I am not in ANY way interested in getting into “ “ discourse ” ” about any of this :) also please remember, if you’re applying any of this to yourself, that whilst enneagram can be used as a fun tool for healthy self-reflection, every person is unique and we don’t always perfectly fit in boxes; take from this what is helpful and try not to get too hung up on it.

all type descriptions are taken from here. under the cut you can find the characters arranged by type with my thoughts on how they differ, as well as what I think their wings would be. MAYBE one day I’ll make something about subtypes, but I’ll need to do waaay more research 😵 if you have any thoughts/questions about my choices here, feel free to drop me an ask!
