About Elminx

Hello Tumbles,

I'm Elminx, aka the Pesto Mystic - you can call me Elmin, Min, or Minx. She/her or They/Them pronouns, please. I live in Southern New England and practice folk-based cottage-styled witchcraft. I've been studying witchcraft and astrology since 1996. This blog will primarily cover these two topics and how they interrelate with one another.

Don't let the flower crown fool you - I'm very into vulture culture.

I primarily work with items that I find in my natural environment - I keep a small witch garden and practice safe wild harvesting. I also actively tend to a local Catholic Cemetery. I walk both in the shadows and in the light.

Depending on your viewpoint, you can call my alignment: Taurus/Aries/Taurus, Sun and Venus dominant, Mercurial, Polya, Kinky, or Queer. Mix those in any way that you wish, or don't. I strongly support trans rights and believe that "witch" is a gender-neutral term.

My Rules of Engagement:

Any words that I share here can be copied down and used freely so long it is for your personal use. If you wish to quote me in any other capacity, please contact me first for permission. My photography is marked with my watermark for a reason - it is not for your use. It is heavily magically warded against stealing (not directed specifically at the Tumblr community but I'm a photographer by trade and people on the internet are assholes) - do not save. I sell copies of my photography, including files that you can print for your personal use - if you wish to use my art, please message me and we can talk.

If you are an asshole, I am going to block you. Full stop.

Supporting Me

You can support me in multiple ways. I have a Ko-Fi account where you can tip me once, order an astrology commission, buy some art, or sign up to become a monthly supporter of this page.

Astrology Commissions

I write Natal Birth Reports, Synastry, and monthly Transit Reports.

A Natal Birth Report looks at the time, date, and place where you were born and interprets the varying aspects of your base personality - your life blueprint. This will help you to understand yourself and my Energy Updates better.

Synastry reports compare two natal birth charts together to look at the strengths and weaknesses of their pairing. This does not have to mean romantically, some of the most powerful synastries are between parents and children.

A Transit Report compares your Natal Birth Chart to the upcoming monthly transits. All Transit Reports received after the 15th of the month will apply to the following month (after May 15 will get you a July report, not June) because they take time to write.

I offer discounts on Transit Reports if you purchase for 3 or 12 months at a time.

If you are looking for the monthly astrology report, you can search my page for the Month+Year (For instance May 2022). If you're feeling really inspired, you can go through my entire Astrology tag.

Daily "avoiding hopelessness" checklist

Hey, friends. I know I've been really struggling to look towards the future with any kind of hope, so here are some little things I've been trying to do every day that might help you, too.

  • Accept that your productivity might look weird right now. Don't expect yourself to act as if nothing is wrong.
  • Make art. I try to write something every day, even if I don't really feel like it, and I've found that once I get into it, I'm grateful I did.
  • Do something to plan for the future. Doesn't have to be big. Even getting some ice cream you know future you will thank you for counts.
  • Eat. Even if you're not hungry. I keep skipping meals because I don't feel like eating, and then I force myself to make something and realize I was absolutely starving.
  • Clean up one thing in your space. If doing all the dishes and sweeping the floors and putting away laundry all feel too overwhelming, try just doing one of those things.
  • Lean on your online and offline communities. I live in a county that voted trump by a margin of eighty percent. My world feels scary and hostile right now, and it's my communities that are helping me feel hopeful.
  • Try to find one thing that feels normal. One thing that feels safe and normal and helps you feel a bit more grounded. My local grocery store just got their shipment of chocolate oranges in for the season. That's my thing.
  • Try to find one thing to look forward to, no matter how small. My thing is checking my ao3 inbox for comments on my fics.

Love you all <3

one of my moots made an excellent post about burn out in occult spaces and what to do magically about it, and I didn't want to derail so here's my little PSA:

Magic is not a "no energy" activity. Even visualization and energy conduction. If you are struggling to do basic magic after you've done magical self care, especially if you're struggling with basic care tasks, it's possible you need to rest. It's possible you need a fallow period in your practice.

I don't say this to discourage people from doing magic or practicing their craft, but as a witch with chronic fatigue who tried to push through burnout and made it worse.

My break was close to 5 years with small things like occasional divination and prayer, but it's worth taking even a week to a month if you feel like you're dragging your body around and nothing you do refreshes your energy

survey question time

Assume that your magic membership would let you and your friends go there (as long as you're with them) for free and works for any location within the chosen category (unless you pick that last one, in which case your membership is only valid for that one location).

(This is partially true honestly, because a lot of museums participate in reciprocity programs as a travel benefit so you can use your museum membership to get free or significantly reduced admission in museums out of town.)

Occult Care:

There has been a small pattern in my asks where people were asking about spiritual and energetic burnout. As you can image, this is concerning because it means that occult self-care isn't really spoken of. We have the basics of cleansing, warding, banishing, what to do and what not to do, etiquette and more - but we don't have a lot talking about the nitty gritty of it. Why it's recommended to have a consistent energy work practice or grounding, or even why grounding is so important. Nor do we talk about the qualities of energy outside of a proposed 'negative' and 'positive'.

Safe to say, there isn't a lot. This isn't a comprehensive post by any means, but is largely just a mashing together of experiences.

Fire and Water Energy

Outside of the praxis of 'negative' (or low vibration, apparently,) energy and 'positive' (high vibration) is a new world of consideration. One of those areas is the quality of energy in relation to other energies around it.

If an energy is hot or has a heating effect, it can be considered fiery in nature. This energy is active, moving, dynamic and can also be the cause of burnout. Putting too much electricity through a cord not made for it will cause an issue.

On the flipside is the cool energy of water. Too much of this can cause stagnation, episodes of spiritual depression, fogginess and sluggishness.

Generally, Fiery Energy is invoked during rituals because we ant movement. What this also means is that we're exposed to this heat, and so need to take time to also cultivate a 'cold' practice. That is that we need to spend time creating something to balance the 'active' forms of our practice. This can be meditation, energy work without any real goal in mind, lunar based meditations or ,quite honestly, intermittent ritual work.

Outside of a Ritual Circle

If you're in a dominantly fiery space, you'll come down quickly when exposed to the varied energetic qualities outside of your ritual or circle. If we were to consider the ritual as producing a high through a stress response, then the sudden drop creates something akin to the whole BDSM Concept of a 'drop'.

Despite the stigma, treating a ritual like a scene is something worth considering because there's a few key notes we can take.

  1. Preparation: This includes awareness of triggers, limitations, keywords, setting your intent, making sure everything's set and ordered both mentally and physically, self-awareness, grounding, mindfulness.
  2. The Scene Itself: little check-ins throughout the ritual to see how the effects are. If you're going too high, insert a little reprieve. If you're going too low, do the same.
  3. The After-Scene: Check with yourself, how do you feel? Do aftercare accordingly, slowly bring yourself back down to the earth. Manage symptoms accordingly (hunger, eat something small. Drink something, take a nap if you need to, mindfulness and grounding meditation to bring yourself from a neither-neither to 'here and now'. Go do something stupid, banish with laughter, basically treat yourself.

Ritual Aftercare for the Body

  • Extended sitting periods: go and walk around, or stretch your legs and arms. Do here what you'd do if you sat down in front of your laptop or computer for too long and needed to take a break.
  • Take a nap. Trust me, this works well. If you hate yourself, wash. If you hate the world, eat. If you feel like the world hates you, sleep.
  • A snack. Items to increase blood sugar, carbs, foods with electrolytes, yogurt. Alternatively, cold foods like peppermint tea, pear, apples, bananas and so on.
  • Bathing or showering.
  • Dry brushing to get blood and energy flowing again.
  • Savasana (Corpse Posture) - quite literally, lay down and let the energy do its own thing until it reaches equilibrium.

Ritual Aftercare for the Mind

  • Pranayama (often used to refer to mindful breathing before and after ritual) - sit for a few moments and just allow your mind to settle and follow your breath.
  • Emotional Regulation Techniques - One technique I like is to hug yourself and to rock back and forth, essentially be a parent to yourself and cradle yourself in that moment.
  • Five-Senses technique: look for five things you can see, four things you can feel, three things you can hear, two things you can smell and one thing you can taste.
  • Go for a walk.
  • Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT Tapping)

Ritual Aftercare for the Spiritual:

  • Anointing: Not really with Abramelin Oil but with other oils, especially those with earthy or grounding scents. The head, hands, feet and heart are preferred here.
  • Cold Water Bath: With too much fiery energy, washing the head with cold water is a good way to settle the fire energy lower to the body.
  • Sandalwood: A sandalwood tilak placed on the forehead soothes the mind and helps in establishing mental clarity.
  • Camphor Oil: A cooling oil is good to place on the head and the back of the ears to cool down the body.

Hey astrology side of tumblr! Why are people like this today?

Avatar
elminx

There aren't any exact aspects today, but the moon is in Aries, which always makes people testy and quick to fight. The aspects that are in effect all week are pretty trash.

Mercury square Saturn - watch what you say, someone is going to take you to account for it. Both Venus (in Capricorn) and Mars (in Leo) will tangle with the lunar nodes this week, which will make some people needy and others avoidant. That never goes well. And then, our full moon at 24 Taurus will be nearly exactly in conjunction with Uranus, a powderkeg waiting for a spark.

Saturn stations direct on Friday, too. Someone has got to pay the piper.

There's a lot of consequence coming up (Saturn/the lunar nodes) but most people would rather be out to lunch and avoid the very obvious outcome of their actions.

Hel and the Moon

Hi all! Hel always appears with some sort of moon imagery attached within my meditations. As well as I've started to notice whenever she is present in a tarot reading I pull the moon card.

I've been trying to research her connections to the moon but so far it has proven fruitless. Does anyone have any sources that relate Hel to the moon, or even just some UPGs might be fun to share about any Hel/Moon vibes? Thanks so much! :)

Sharing in case folks have experiences they'd like to share x0x

I have always associated Hel as the half moon as she is both living and dead. Like Loki, I see her in this way as the immortalized “Other” - one foot in one world and one foot in the other. This is why I myself and a number of my other queer and multiracial friends are drawn to her. She bridges the many worlds and helps us to figure out ways to exist within spaces that are not necessarily created for us. We honor her on the half moon for this reason.

You gotta just. Unfollow blogs that upset you. If you are so angry at a total stranger that you send them multiple anonymous messages, that is not normal. That is not healthy behavior.

Hi! I saw over your blog and, well, you seem to know about this and also seem kind, so

I'm recently getting into astrology, and my friend scared me saying that having the top four (Sun, Moon, RIsing, Mercury) be the same is a lot of bad luck....is that true? It's all Scorpio (born on 7:26 am 26th Oct 2003, Mumbai)

I dunno much about astrology yet, but that's bad, right? I've also generally have really bad luck all the time except in spring season. I also know people don't like my sign much...

Okay, first off there is no inherently good or bad placements in astrology. Some are easier than others, sure. But a good astrologer knows that people with more difficult placements tend to accomplish more; it’s like difficult placements act as motivation and drive. FWIW, I wouldn’t even consider having Sun, Moon, Ascendant, and Mercury in the same sign to be difficult - it just means you were born near dawn on or near a new moon.

That’s actually a pretty powerful placement.

Secondly, I love Scorpio. It might be my favorite sign.

I hope that helps.
