Somewhere Else au jontim but when they fight Jon looks so inexplicably sad and Tim can never figure out why. He's seen Jon go toe to toe with other professors and other academics, he almost looks like he enjoys it. His students can testify how terrifying Jon is when he's mad. But when Tim and Jon fight, Jon just goes quiet and sad. He'll defend himself sometimes but most of the time he just apologizes and Tim is So Confused.

He also never seems to say no hanging out? It's weird. Like Jon avoids him like the plague at the start, But the minute Tim befriends him and invites him out to drinks and stuff he almost always says yes.

Tim introduced him to Sasha and he seemed friendly to her, if not a little awkward. But the moment Tim says her name he goes quiet. The rest of the dinner Tim noticed that Jon never stops looking at her, stealing glances when he thinks no one is looking

Tim almost thinks that Jon might have a thing for her until Jon introduces Tim to his boyfriend Martin, and the Exact same thing happens

Except Tim has gotten used to Jon looking at him like a kicked puppy, he didn't expect this 6'5 bear of a man to Also do it LMAO

Terror prof Jon is so funny to me but I think that He isn't even mean, he's mostly awkward and a little bit boring unless he goes on one of his tangents. It's just that he's brutal when it comes to consultations and feedback, and his exams are excruciatingly detailed. His student ratings are so polarizing and his reviews are like "he made me cry once and I got dangerously close to failing but now I know a lot about the Nabateans. I might enlist in his class again next term."

something something Curly's whole downfall was being a bystander. He was supposed to use the little power he had to protect his crew by any means necessary, and he doesn't. He stands by and allows harm to come. And the moment he finally realizes that something must be done, is the very moment where he becomes so disabled that he physically can't. He goes from unwilling to unable to protect his crew, suddenly stuck in the role he gave to himself.

His eyelids are singed off, he can no longer close his eyes to look away from Jimmy's crimes. One of his eyes are gone, and yet he can see more clearly then ever before. He sees jimmy more clearly than ever before. He is forced to see the consequences of his inaction, and is forced to remain inactive. He is forced to watch Anya die. Forced to hear Daisukes screams through the vents. Forced to hear the gunshot that kills Swansea. Forced to see and hear Jimmy off himself, while Jimmy still thinks he is doing the right thing, while Jimmy still thinks that he's being good to Curly by leaving him in the cryochamber. And he cannot do a thing about it, because he chose earlier to not do a damn thing to prevent it all.

He chose to be a bystander, and he chose poorly. You dug your grave, now lie in it.

i like to think that a j&w modern au would involve aunt agatha making a tinder profile for bertie. it seems like the most modern equivalent of arranged marriage and i think the image of a ~70 year old women swiping right on a 20 yro girl she deems acceptable for her wayward (see: gay) nephew is... fitting

i. feel like stanford is simultaneously frankenstein and his monster.

he makes a scientific discovery aimed to show his success and genius and to prove that any time 'wasted' with the more esoteric sciences was worth it. that discovery is the cause of his downfall and causes him years of pain and suffering. that discovery puts his family at risk.

but he's also betrayed and left by the one person who he trusted- the one person who he thought he should trust- the one who made him notable and important now abandons him in a world new and terrifying. he is the cause of his creators downfall, although it's not him that's solely responsible. he ends the life he previously lived to move on to the sea.

since edwin is very closed off, except for when he’s with his best friend, charles, costume designer kelli dunsmore reflected his buttoned-up mentality through his bespoke suit, complete with bowtie and collar. edwin’s outfit, along with charles’ period garb, were designed to help them stand out more in modern day port townsend. “i knew edwin would, because no one dresses like that now,” says dunsmore.
dunsmore wanted everything about charles to feel “a little bit cool and underground,” from his union jack and the who bull’s-eye patches to his checkerboard pins. his little cross earring and chain on the outside of his shirt are also meant to be homages to the ’80s.
in the show, crystal’s hero color is purple, which you’ll notice in her velvet coat and long silk letterman jacket, which dunsmore thought of as a psychic cloak with hand-embroidered patches, including the wilting rose of england.
her brown trench coat represents an explosion of everything going on in her mind. dunsmore decided the scribbled words and drawings are a result of crystal writing all over it to express her inner turmoil. there are even lyrics on there from the song she’s listening to on the tube when she meets the dead boys.
david’s connection with crystal seeps into her wardrobe, too. since david wears a flower shirt, dunsmore’s team hand-painted flowers onto crystal’s black boots. and niko is wearing a dark sweater with flowers on it when we first meet her, as an homage to crystal. the costume department also drew the same rune pattern the dead boys use to exorcise david in episode 1 onto crystal’s trench coat and on the tab of her wool bomber jacket. “so she’s always got some sort of protection,” says dunmore.
every color niko wears is inspired by what’s happening in that episode, from the green post-sprite exodus to blue when she’s feeling sad. niko only wears a white look, with nods to her japanese heritage, in the finale as a reset. the charms on her obi belt represent the colors she’s worn all season.
night nurse is someone who’s in control all the time and likes things to be in their proper place. dunsmore looked to vivienne westwood for inspiration, since everything in night nurse’s world is a bit exaggerated. (by the way, niko’s orange monochromatic look is a nod to her scenes with night nurse and night nurse’s red hair.)
since david is a demon, he finds a london boy that looks cool enough for crystal to find attractive. that meant dunsmore dressing him in a shearling jacket you’d find in “all the guy ritchie movies,” black pants and creeper shoes. the costumer’s mood board for “david the d” featured radiohead and amy winehouse and her husband blake, who often wore hats similar to the one you see david wearing in the show.
pay close attention to monty’s leather jacket and you just might spot an inlaid crow feather or two.
it’s not only esther who wears clothes with a gilt, old-gold color — cat king and night nurse also do as a nod to their villainy. (esther and cat king also have similar fur coats.) amidst her beauty, dunsmore wanted esther to be a little rough around the edges. she wears a cuff around her hand that’s adorned with a snake and a ring with teeth all around it to represent the teeth she’s collecting from all the little girls. her eye necklace is meant to be her witch pendant.
mischievous as ever, cat king has (cat) eyes everywhere and is aware of edwin’s affection for charles. so he wears charles’ socks the first time he meets edwin.

I just finished a complete re-read for the third (fourth?) time and the recent updates are barreling toward some climactic events, so I therefore feel compelled to make a proper rec post for something LONG overdue:

The Glass Scientists, a webcomic about Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde, rogue science, Victorian repression, and a WHOLE lot more.

Our protagonist is the esteemed Dr. Henry Jekyll, co-founder of the Society for Arcane Sciences, an organization that aims to bring mad science into the mainstream by proving that not all who practice it are dangerous lunatics. This is easier said than done, especially with the violent death of a certain Dr. Frankenstein still weighing on the minds of the public years after the fact. Not to mention...

... Henry's own inner demons.

Edward Hyde serves as a sort of release valve for Henry's stresses whenever the pressure of running the Society proves to be too much. Hyde is everything he can't be: spontaneous, emotional, uninhibited. Free to take what he wants without guilt or public consequences.

And oh, Henry wants.

His transformation into Hyde is a physical manifestation of the repression of his queer inclinations. This is not subtext. It's not even an accident on Henry's part. It's a central facet to who he is as a person (and, by extension, who Hyde is, as well).

...But listen. We don't have time to unpack all THAT! Not when there are so many other delightful characters to meet! Such as Henry's best friend / business partner / old flame Robert:

Or Jasper, the newest member of the Society, a plucky young cryptozoologist who happens to also be a werewolf, and who gets swept up in a VERY cute relationship with the slightly unhinged cook (and Henry's other best friend), Rachel:

Or Hyde himself, who despite all his debauchery may not actually be the pinnacle of evil that he believes himself to be:

Because if you couldn't tell from the sampling of panels in this post, this comic is not only a gripping emotional drama but also an OUTRAGEOUS comedy, when the mood calls for it. It truly strikes a perfect balance of the two, in my humble opinion.

On top of all that, the art is gorgeous, the atmosphere is impeccable (swinging from fantastical whimsy to genuine horror and back with deft skill), and the characters are deep and dynamic and full of gray areas.

I can't recommend it enough. It's hands-down my favorite actively-updating webcomic (new page every Monday!), and I'm for-real having to restrain myself from going back and starting ANOTHER re-read right now, it's that good. I've spoiled a tiny bit in this post, but believe me when I say the cast and events get so much weirder and more wonderful than even this. Please check it out.
