OP I am sorry to be That Fan Who Adds A Buncha Dorky Comments, but anybody who doubts that Rhodey loves Tony (and that Tony loves him too), platonically or otherwise….watch this scene in Iron Man 2. They have some great scenes throughout the MCU but THIS ONE. This. Rhodey is the head of acquisitions and weapons development for US Department of Defense. That’s not just the Air Force, but every single branch of the US military, which is the largest military force in the world. Do you think he’s got time to talk a bunch of reserve troops down, the kinda guys who never see combat so they’re probably itching to flex and stunt on Iron Man? Rhodey has weapons to buy and build and test and approve for mass production, but he protects Tony’s creations and his home from the people he works for, wastes precious time in his day to make sure that the military doesn’t launch an offensive against his best friend. He then goes on to notice that Tony is physically ill when no one else in Tony’s life has picked up on that, and he changes the palladium core of the arc reactor without any direction from Tony. Seriously, Tony doesn’t even tell him where the fresh palladium is. Rhodey just knows. And then he tells Tony that he is not alone, that Tony has help and that Tony has a friend in him.
Rhodey wants Tony to be safe and healthy. Iron Man laid that down neatly and completely with the Afghanistan rescue (even more so when you watch the deleted scenes where Rhodey welcomes an official reprimand in lieu of stopping the search for Tony), and Iron Man 2 is no different. I’m sick of the fandom-at-large deriding Rhodey’s in IM2. News flash: they are grown men, and this is how they show love. He is not just a hardass who doesn’t want some annoying fellow MIT alum fucking up national security. He’s Tony’s best friend, confidante, and one of very few people who Tony trusts with his life.
