They just don't make ships anymore where one person in the ship canonically convinces a grieving father to sacrifice himself to a terrible death by monster in order to save the life of the second person in the ship, and, when confronted about it, just says the second person's name so aching and soft

More How To Manage ADHD

“I never remember to take out the trash until my trash can is full, at which point the trash bag is really heavy and the stuff at the bottom has been rotting a while, and it’s awful!”

Small brain: “Try to train yourself to take out the trash on certain days at certain times.”

Large brain: “Buy a tiny trash can. Now you HAVE to empty it.”

That’s genius!

I just put it in front of my door when it’s full so I am physically unable to leave unless I pick it up.

The best advice I’ve ever received about managing my depression/anxiety/adhd is that disability exists in the context of the environment. Accommodations are not about changing yourself to work in your environment — it’s about changing your environment to better work for you.

So yeah, get a tiny trash can and put it by your door. Store your towels in your bathroom so you can immediately change them when they smell funny. Hang a basket by your door for your gloves and earbuds. Leave a box of cliff bars by your door so you never leave without breakfast. Change your environment and change your life!

“Change your environment and change your life”

I learned a long time ago that if I have to remember to pack a fork *every day* for lunch, I end up at work with no fork about 30% of the time.

But if I take an entire 50 count box of forks and put the entire thing in my lunch box? I *always have a fork.*

And I have extra forks for coworkers who forgot to pack a fork, and then I seem SUPER responsible. Lol.

Back in 2011 I attended an event called BMoreFail which was a business seminar on business failure, taught by guest speakers who had all failed at something, and I had a revelation.

If your system would work fine if people Just Would, but it does not work because people Don’t, and you feel very strongly that it works but people are not using it right and if only they Just Would everything would be fine… your system is a failure. Because if people were capable of Just Doing, they would be doing. The fact that people Don’t is an indication that they, in fact, cannot Just Would.

I was thinking of this in terms of workflow systems in business, but it’s just as meaningful in the systems you create for yourself that would work if you Just Would. Because if you Could, then you already Would. The fact that you Don’t even though it would work if you Just Would means that you in fact Can’t and you need to redesign the system.

That doesn’t always make it easier to figure out a system that will work, but it does tell you something about how to deal with the repeated failure of the system. Change it. The system is always what’s broken, not the people in it. Systems exist to serve people; if they cannot serve people because people can’t use them, they are wrong and must be changed.

if your Correct System sucks to use the Right Way, it isn’t correct and that isn’t the right way. redesign it.

I think Americans need to understand how normal it is in other countries to have extremely limited hours of operation to ensure the sanity and health of workers are kept in tact. We are so accustomed and entitled to demanding people’s time that we forget that they’re… y’know… people

Being in Germany was really humbling because legit the GROCERY STORE would straight up close for almost 3 days because of how holidays would line up and the hours were already limited to literally be from 8-8 because people need to go home and live their own lives

It is very common for places in Spain to straight up shut down for 2-3 hours because people take siestas seriously since it gets hot and people deserve to take a nap

The world is not going to end if you’re inconvenienced by just… coming back later. We’ve been spoiled with immediacy and technology that we forget there was a point in time in human history where a person had to trek 20+ minutes down to the village bakery only to find it closed because of some family emergency and that just meant there would be no bread that day- and that’s okay!!

The discourse surrounding labor is so sad because we should not demand or expect things to be open 24/7 because we were not designed to be constantly moving machines. We need to relearn how to plan better since downtime is a wonderful opportunity to reflect and enjoy the moment. Not everything needs to be done with gusto and fervor. Sometimes it’s fine to pivot and just enjoy the moment for what it is and try again later. Touch more nature. Bask in the sun and rain. Breathe.

i’m getting less and less able to tolerate tumblr/twitter posts that are like “adulthood is just [insert description of being brutally overworked and unable to tend to one’s home and basic needs]” like no…that’s not adulthood…..that’s capitalism. and you perpetuating its legitimacy with memes about how your suffering under capitalism is caused by your personal failure to ~adult~ correctly, or about how adulthood is just Like That, is not cute or funny.

it just makes me so angry because adulthood should be, and in many places historically was, a wonderful culmination when we grow into our responsibility for and full participation in our communities and take control of our own lives and build our own families. and capitalism has destroyed almost all of that for almost all of us and i just want people to be aware of that loss, at the very least

Three things that are simultaneously true:

- everyone has done something bad at some point

- people can change their behavior for the better

- the people that have been mistreated might still not want anything to do with that person ever again

I used to think communication was the key until I realized comprehension is. You can communicate all you want with someone but if they don’t understand you, its silent chaos.

"When we are looking for compassion, we need someone who is deeply rooted [...] it’s about connecting with the right person at the right time about the right issue.”

grown ass men are out here not eating fruit or vegetables or washing their face and having a list of things women must do to be attractive to them and thus gain their respect like grow the fuck up and eat a carrot literally no woman needs you

“No woman needs you” said the future cat lady lol

Newsflash. No man needs a bitch telling him to eat rabbit food and nagging him constantly.

I cannot wait to see feminism burn itself out.

I don’t get why ‘cat lady’ is an insult to women

My dude, you got this backward; welcome to the modern era, we have careers, money, we buy our own houses and cars, and we have easy access to a selection of vibrators our ancestresses could only dream of.  Companionship is great and everything, but as many of us discovered, it comes in many forms.

If a woman has a cat but you don’t see a guy, that’s usually because she did the math and overall, men scored lower than a furry animal that shits in a box and a Hitachi.

I want to be rich enough to leave $100 tips

I want to be rich enough to solve my friends life problems.

“Money doesn’t fix everything” but it can pay off my coworkers car so she can leave her abusive husband. It can buy gas money and bus tickets and pay rent and cover medical expenses and just.

It wouldn’t fix everything but it would provide a great first step and it’s so frustrating when the solution is so plain to see but completely unattainable and maybe I’m being naive but that’s just the mood for today lads.

Money doesn’t fix everything but being poor sure can fucking BREAK a lot of shit.

the most flattering thing in the world is when you get the "you got kudos!" email from ao3 and then you look at it and you got kudos from the same person on all your works because it means they read the first thing and thought it was good enough that they read everything else you've written and liked that too.

All stories are about wolves. All worth repeating, that is. Anything else is sentimental drivel.
All of them?
Sure, he says. Think about it. There's escaping from the wolves, fighting the wolves, capturing the wolves, taming the wolves. Being thrown to the wolves, or throwing others to the wolves so the wolves will eat them instead of you. Running with the wolf pack. Turning into a wolf. Best of all, turning into the head wolf. No other decent stories exist.
