SilverV Recommended Reading

Wanted to do a post where I share some of my all-time favorite multi-chapter SilverV fics, in no particular order. Highly recommend checking all of these out, as well these authors' other work! I stg this fandom has some crazy talented writers.

  • cut loose (before it gets late) - cherrykiss Literally cannot recommend this one highly enough!!!! Set post-game, Johnny has his body back, but V is still dying. It's about Johnny and V getting together and is wonderfully painful and incredibly fun. Read this one, you will NOT regret it.
  • Run To You - JaneOfTheChoir Also set post-game, Johnny has his body back. Featuring Ambrosia, a Nomad V. The main plot involves her being kidnapped. Still in the early chapters, but an extremely exciting start!!!
  • Smoke and Retribution - madelinek Another one of my absolute favorites. This one is an AU where V is a popular musician during the same years as Samurai, and she enlists Johnny's help in getting out of her record deal with Arasaka. Really really fun and spicy!
  • Cyberpunk 2003: Never Fade Away - bubble_bones Another AU where V is alive during Johnny's time, but in this one, she's a fan who meets him after a show (and loses her virginity to him lol). It's the first part of a series, so if you dig it, there's PLENTY more where it came from!
  • Phantom Touch - teeterss This one is a new one that just started posting recently, but it's such a strong, promising start and I personally am very excited to see where it goes, so I'm including it on this list! Follows the story of the game but doesn't rewrite or include scenes from the game.
  • Can You Feel The Sun? - heartofsnark This one follows the story of the game and features a V named Aidan, the author's deaf OC. Top tier Johnny banter and dialogue in this one, and a super unique and fleshed out OC if that's your thing!
  • Feedback Loop - Cantique Covers the story of the game, also heavily features a V/Takemura romance. A classic for a reason! Also, there's a sequel.
  • Take Me Home - KettleBlack This one focuses more on River/V than Johnny/V, but still goes on this list for being EXCELLENT. This one really stuck with me and remains one of my all-time faves.
  • Do You Dream of Me? - ruruie If you've read my fic you know I am a SUCKER for dream tropes. This fic is a reimagining of the Devil ending and it absolutely ruined my life in the best way. Features a corpo V. Highly recommend!
  • The Rebel Path - elf_trash And last but hopefully not least, this one is mine!!! Covers the events of the game and beyond, including a rewrite of the endings and a fix-it. Features Vero, my street kid goblin daughter and has a Kerry/V romance arc as well. Very angsty, you've been warned.

Do yourself a favor and click on these links you won't regret it!!!

reblogging this again bc I feel like Edgerunners has brought a new influx of fans to the game and y'all should read some good soup

CDPR: Panam is the most popular love interest!

AO3:

Reblogging to add updated ao3 stats:

Kerry/V has overtaken Judy/V for the #2 spot, and it's interesting that there are now more than TWICE as many SilverV fics as the next one on the list.

I like Panam, too, and her romance is great and this post was never meant to be a dig at her or her fans! I think fandom often fills in where canon is lacking, and Panam already has a TON of romance content in the game whereas Johnny isn't even a canon option, so it makes sense there would be more fanmade content for that ship than for one where players were more or less satisfied with the canon story and content they got.

Still interesting to see these breakdowns, though! Hope CDPR is paying attention lol

A case for fan fiction

I'm a writer working on an original novel that I intend to try to get published. Here's why I think writing fan fiction is an excellent exercise for writers at any stage of their career.

  1. It's GREAT practice. If you do more of something, you get better at it. And if you have an idea for a fic that you keep thinking about, why would you actively stop yourself from writing something you actually WANT to write? They say to write what's at the front of your brain, and if that's a fic idea, just write it! Visual artists sketch existing characters all the time for inspiration or for practice, and one could argue that writing fanfiction is essentially the same thing but in literary form.
  2. Specifically, it's great practice at writing character voice. Trying to match the speaking style, mannerisms, and personality of an existing character is a unique challenge, and it forces you as a writer to become more aware of and intentional about these things! It's definitely strengthened the way I think about and characterize my original characters, and helped me make them each unique and consistent.
  3. It's like decorating a house versus building it from the ground up. Since the characters, scenarios, and world-building are often provided to you ready-made, it's an opportunity to practice simple things like prose, dialogue, and characterization without having to worry as much about creating the entire scaffolding to support it.
  4. It's an opportunity to try things you may not put in a piece of writing you intend to publish. Smut scenes are the obvious funny answer here, but another example I can think of that I've encountered in writing my own fic is that it's made me much better at writing and describing action scenes! And just generally, because I know from the get-go that I'm not writing my fic to publish, I allow myself to try things and experiment in ways that I wouldn't necessarily do in my original work.
  5. It can help you reconnect with your love for writing. There's something liberating about writing something purely for its own sake. Knowing going in that there's zero or limited potential to publish, the only remaining reason for you to be writing fanfic is because you just genuinely enjoy the act of writing, creating, and sharing it. Speaking personally, it's made me get back into the mindset of thinking of writing as something I do for fun, which means that I've now created the habit of defaulting to writing as my go-to activity during my pockets of free time throughout the day.
  6. The feedback you get from sharing it is great motivation to keep writing. The instant gratification of comments and readers' excitement for the next chapter are an excellent way to keep the momentum going! And the community I've discovered with other fic writers has become almost like a writers' workshop group of sorts. A lot of talented writers write fic, and it's an amazing community of people who write for fun that can help you grow and improve and challenge yourself as a writer.
  7. Sometimes you CAN publish it! We all know about 50 Shades of Grey, but that aside, often times elements or ideas or even the entire premise of a fanfic story can be adapted fairly easily into original content, especially if you're writing an AU or something more distantly removed from the canon. Of course, this isn't always possible, but that still doesn't mean its wasted effort - the things you learn from writing fic or writing tricks and tools you develop will almost inevitably be carried over into your original writing as well.

Basically, if you have aspirations to publish and are hesitant about writing fic for any reason, my advice is to stop overthinking it and just hecking do it! Writing is writing, and creating art from existing stories is something as old as art itself. There's zero shame in it, and the experience you'll get is well worth it.

Legit some of the most beautiful writing I've ever read has been in fanfic, and I've encountered some staggeringly talented writers in so many fandoms. I'm hopeful that the stigma surrounding it is lessening slowly but surely, because it really is as valid a form of creating as anything else is.

New chapter of The Rebel Path is up! I've never done Tumblr updates for my fic before lmao but I guess now's as good a time to start as any? This might be a one-time experiment too, who knows lol

For new readers, this is my Johnny/V slow burn that follows Johnny and V's relationship through the game and beyond. Mostly canon compliant with lots of heavy embellishment.

Fic is NSFW so no minors please!
