I regret ever coming back to Tumblr. It's full of people who think they are literally saving lives in Gaza by posting on a website that is half porn bots and half Doctor Who gifs.

I like how teenagers on this site think that we're not allowed to like historical fiction because the original people the fiction is loosely based on had slaves, even if those characters in the show do not have slaves. In that case then I guess you also don't like Hamilton, Bridgerton, Doctor Who, Black Sails, Song of Achilles, Eagle of the Ninth, WWDITS, or any other books, films, or tv shows set before the abolition of slavery where the real people of those stories would have either owned slaves or benefited from slavery.

Different people have different real world issues they can tolerate. It's perfectly fine to say I don't like this show because the original character it was based on was a slave owner, in the same way you can no longer like Harry Potter because JKR is a TERF. But it can also be incredibly empowering to take a story from the past and make it queer and diverse and explicitly anti-racist, to make a king a queen or a well known womanizer gay, to add trans people into the narrative, to turn a major historical figure into a person of colour. Historical fiction isn't written for people in the past; it's written for the people of the present.

I blocked everyone I saw saying this stupid shit (especially that person who said they hope that ofmd fans are murdered in a genocide??? like what????) so it's not like they will see this anyway, but as someone who loves historical fiction and with two degrees in history it's really bothering me to see people call ofmd a show about slave owners, when that is blatantly untrue. The show doesn't deny that the world they live in has colonisation, slavery, racism, and sexism, but it is in no way about the real Blackbeard or Stede Bonnet, both of whom were probably terrible people, in the same way that Queen Charlotte in Bridgerton is not about the real Queen Charlotte or Nandor from WWDITS isn't a real Ottoman.

(I'd also argue that ofmd is historical in the same way that the first Captain Marvel film was set in the 90s - technically true but it has almost nothing to do with the story. But that's for another day, and I'm on my lunch break from working on helping real life people with real problems like homelessness.)

"I'm sick of people portraying this character as-" "I'm tired of seeing-" "I'm tired of fics where-"

okay then WRITE YOUR OWN. if you don't like the way others write your favorite characters, if you don't like certain tropes or scenarios, if you don't like certain headcanons, you're not obligated to read any of it. you are free to write your own shit. nothing is stopping you. fanfic writers don't owe you anything, and neither do authors, showrunners, etc. we're not here to cater to your own special little headcanons. we're here to tell stories we'd like to see and share them with people who want to see them. that's all. so stop complaining, and go make your own.

i agree with this to some extent, in that people should be allowed to write whatever fiction they want, but also people are allowed to be uncomfortable with tropes and trends and voice that on their own blog. especially when some fandom trends and tropes are linked to problematic ideas that are worth criticizing as some authors might not even realize they're perpetuating a problem (such as the language they may use to describe a POC, or characterizing women in misogynistic ways that don't line up with their more nuanced canon selves). and even if they're not problematic, i still have the right to discuss on my own blog if i think there's an element of canon that fanfics neglect or misrepresent. if you disagree you also have the ability to just scroll past it.

if you don't want to engage in such discussions because you would rather treat fanfic as a way to indulge in whatever makes you happy, that's fine. but many people want to discuss and criticize fanfiction as they would any other form of fiction, and I think that's more productive than just being like "well people worked really hard on this for free so you're not allowed to complain unless you make your own."

(also a lot of us do make our own fics for what we want to see, but when one particular headcanon or author already dominates the fandom, it can be quite hard to get views on your own work if it doesn't fit that mold, especially when some people get so attached to a headcanon they legitimately mistake it for canon and will call out any deviation from it as if it's "wrong." and don't get me started on trying to get attention for any fic that isn't tagged with a popular ship lmao.)

As an avid fanfic reader, there's a difference between (and apologies to Izzy/Lucius fans but this is just an example off the top of my head) 'I don't like Izzy/Lucius because I don't see it' and 'I'm not cool with this trend in Izzy/Lucius fics to bash Stede and Ed.' The former is whatever, who cares, write what you like. But we can discuss why the second one bothers us.

That said I think we should be careful not to confuse someone having fun with someone trying to make a statement via their fanfic. Be kind to each other, fandom.

Edit: oh I'm seeing people arguing about who's topping. Good lord. Disregard the above, that's definitely a stupid thing to fight over.

I just saw a fanfic author on tiktok advertising their fic like booktok does and peace and love but friend. your real life actual face??? associated with your fic???

listen, as far as y'all are concerned, I am a sentient seal with access to a keyboard, and we’re leaving it at that
