Ergo, may I present the headcannon that will live rent-free in my head:
Hitomi had been watching over Sango all these years...and then one day, while Sango is out to silently lament at what her life had become, he appears in her time of need...as a ghost of sorts.
telling her she's gonna be alright
even with an absent husband and the ever-bustling chaos that comes with raising her children alone
because she is, and always will be, loved. but Sango, with trauma from dealing with Naraku, is having a hard time separating the vision of the kind Lord and the evil hanyou who slaughtered her family.
