Genuine question from an outsider, what’s wrong with the New Zealand Treaty Principles Bill? The news articles I’ve read have just been so vaguely worded as to essentially stop at “Maori people don’t like this, because *vague gestures*”. Thanks!

This is really complicated because we don't have a constitution!

The Treaty is a contract, effectively an international agreement, between the British monarch and the Maaori tribal leaders at the time. Since then, the responsibilities of the British monarch have been folded into the body currently known as 'the Crown' which is basically the government. The responsibilities of the Maaori hapu leadership have remained pretty much where they are.

The Treaty is the legal foundation of the nation of New Zealand in that it provides legal justification for Pakeha to be in the country at all, let alone governing it.

The Treaty allows the Crown to govern New Zealand and purchase land, and grants Maaori all the same rights as British (now New Zealand) citizens, and it allows Maaori continued sovereignty over 'all their treasures', which includes, among other things, land, culture, language, and access to the sea to harvest food.

Needless to say, the Crown have pretty egregiously breached the Treaty countless times, including confiscating (not buying) almost all of the enormous Waikato region where Maipi-Clarke is from. For this reason, we have the Waitangi Tribunal, who investigate claims of Treaty breaches and recommend the compensation the Crown should pay to the specific tribe that was wronged. This is an ongoing process.

This bill is the Crown trying to redefine the terms of the Treaty unilaterally, just by saying 'yeah we said so', and not by going back to a gathering of the Maaori tribal leadership as it currently stands to say 'can we renegotiate'.

The bill says that Maaori will only have the same rights as everyone else, and whatever they have already received in compensation settlements. The sharp-eyed will note that 'everybody' does not have sovereignty, so the wording of the bill strips Maaori of one of the major things the Treaty promises them, while shutting the door to any future compensation for wrongs done to them.

2010. A Japanese woman sits down to take photos of her shiba inu dog for her blog. Suddenly, a man leaps out of a time portal. "Sorry, I can't let you do this. I cannot tell you why." She asks: "Is it forbidden knowledge from the future?" He sighs: "No, it's just too fucking stupid to explain."

Hot take, but cis people have gender identities. They aren't the gender they identify as because of their genitalia or what their birth certificate says. They're only cis because they identify with a gender and it happens to match their government documentation. Cis men aren't men because they're "obviously" men for having a penis. They're men because they identify as men. It's the self-identification that dictates this, not any other factor, even for cis folks. And we should be framing it this way. A cis man identifies as a man and a cis woman identifies as a woman. There is no automatic or inherent gender.

You are not "born a boy/girl." Infants don't have a gender. You acquire gender when you identify as it. No such thing as "biologically a man/woman."

"I don't identify as anything, I'm a man."

It sure sounds like you identify as a man, bud.

Giving a brownie to cis folks who rb this.

Gonna admit the "this isn't a hot take it's obvious" comments from a dozen or so people are grating on my nerves, so I'm gonna address that.

Just say you've never had an actual conversation with a cis person outside of a very leftist circle lol. Obvious to you. To you, fellow trans person. I wish I got paid every time I had to hear a cis person say they don't have a gender identity or don't "identify" as anything they just "are" a man or a woman.

Sometimes you have to stop and ask yourselves what group of people a post is mainly directed at.

You'll want to keep the sound off, it's just horrible crackling from me moving the phone. But. I got some REALLY COOL glasses today. They look glass, but they're acrylic plastic. I told my mom I thought that the bottom color would cause the water above it to shift colors, due to the design of the 'pillars' on the outside or whatever, and I was right. Except it's even cooler, because from the side it still looks clear, so I'll get the rainbow shift effect every time I tip it to take a drink. This will be a DELIGHT for me, every time.

Editing to add that this is a "crystal" (collection name) tumbler from Merritt designs. They make others (that I suspect do the same thing), however I think this exact design isn't around on their site anymore so it may no longer be in production.

Oh, it just dawned…It looks clear, but it's actually reflections…You can't actually see through to the opposite side of the glass, making this apperance no different than a cup painted black on the outside, while having an ornate, surreal, multi-colored rainbow design on the inside…

Nope it's clear!

The color just comes from refracted light from the cup design. The only color on it is in the bottom, the rest is clear acrylic.

Without water in it, it only refracts up the pillars on the sides.
