Great Big Garden Party in the Sky

28 - They/Them - Agender - Jewish - Float me down the river so I can look upon the stars. On my back I watch them dance with open vacant eyes. Float me down the river with a light heart for my prize. I wore it on my sleeves even though it stained them red. Float me down the river 'till I reach my destined bed. The rapids, my procession, your lanterns leading through the night. Float me down the river till the kelp holds me tight. Water cold and moss soft, fish tangle in my hair. By night you dreamed of mermaids but you never dreamed it was me.

Help a disabled queer Jew get a service dog

Hey, I'm Jack and I'm trying to raise some funds for a new service dog. My previous service dog passed away three years ago and my quality of life has broken through the basement without her help. I'm in the process of getting the new boy (still working on a name) and he's expected to be on his way to me June 20th.

I am planning on getting a loan through a local charity organization that offers low interest loans for people to get medical assistance supplies. It means that I can get him now, but it is money I do have to pay back. I have some money saved but it's not enough to cover the full amount. Right now my only income is through disability payments so any extra help I can get would be greatly appreciated.

The current goal is $10,000, which would cover all of the foreseeable expenses, but anything I can get would be helpful.

I'm also selling flower crowns to raise money. You can find that post here

Thanks gentle-friends, and happy pride!

Just watched the banned Moon Girl episode.

>the episode addresses the topic of trans kids in sports >the entire episode is about how bigots will always move the goalpost, and playing by their rules is pointless >the solution is not to play their game and break the rules >it also states that trans people should never feel like a burden >the character Brooklyn is explicitly stated to be trans >there is also an explicitly nonbinary character >multiple mentions of pride and depictions of pride flags, trans flags and progress flags

I'm not at all surprised this didn't get past the censors but I'm so mad that it didn't, because this could've been something really special, and the fact it was canned after being fully finished is downright painful. This episode was wonderful and I'm grateful to all the people who worked on it, and angry that their hard work was wasted. Disney did not deserve you.

I never want to hear another cis person talk shit about trans healthcare ever fucking again.

How many letters from a psychiatrist did this man need?

How many years did he have to live as his desired height (on stilts) before he would even have been considered?

What was his mandatory wait time on top of that to make sure he "really wanted it"? How many asked him if it was reversable just in case he changed in his mind?

How many right-wing weirdos are threatening to fire bomb the hospital that it was rumored on mumsnet maybe did a procedure like that one time?

How many people have centered their personality (Height Criticals) around hating him and organize online mobs to bully and harass him?

Hey so fun new scam just dropped! I got a call earlier today from someone spoofing the local police department's desk number, asking me if there was a reason I'd missed my jury summons this morning.

Friends, I had not received a jury summons for this month. Which I told him, at which point his previously clear diction suddenly turned into a rapid mumble, only becoming clear for scary words like 'federal' and then asking to confirm my address, at which point I hung up and decided to call the police department later.

When I called the police department the desk officer sounded so tired y'all. All I had to say was "Hey I got a call earlier saying I missed jury duty this morning?" and she immediately sighed and told me that yes it was a scam that was going around and thanked me for calling to confirm.

So this is your periodic reminder that law enforcement agencies will not call you to tell you that you're in trouble. If you need to pay a fine of some sort they will mail you a physical invoice. Anyone calling you saying they're from the police or any other law enforcement organization (up to the CIA and yes I have heard of scammers attempting to impersonate CIA agents over the phone) who then tries to get financial information from you over the phone is a scammer.

I know I actually bang on about this a weird amount, but it is my fervent hope that the information will stick in peoples' brains if they get randomly selected for the adrenaline spike lottery. Scammers use scary words to get you to panic in order to shut down your critical thinking, and if even one person's brain spits out "Tumblr user waterhobbit said the cops/CIA/federal marshalls don't call about this shit" before their bank account routing number is in the hands of assholes I will consider it a job well done.

The person in this post follows my rule of thumb that protects me from 99.9% of all phone scams, and i'd like to highlight it here

For ANY "important" call you actually think might be real, get the name of the agency or institution involved, (and here is the important part:) look up the phone number to that agency or institution on your own, and call back about it.

If you never use a phone number they give you and always look up the number on your own, they can never scam you. Here's how it looks.

"hi, i'm from your bank and your account has just been charged, just, so much money, we're worried it might be fraud."

"Thank you for letting me know, I'll call back later, goodbye"

Then i look up my bank's phone number, and call that number, and tell them i received a call about suspicious activity on my account.

If it's real, they'll help me with it, and if it's not they'll confirm it's not true. Either way, i know i'm talking to the actual bank and not a scammer.

This works for ALL phone scammers, no matter how scary or time sensitive they try to tell you it is. If it's real, something like "i'm driving right now but i'll call back in a few minutes, no thank you i already have the contact information for your agency/business" is ALWAYS an acceptable answer, at most they will want to give you some kind of a case number before you hang up. The more they resist you calling them back from a number you look up, the more likely they are to be a scam.

False urgency! False urgency!

They are banking on that adrenaline spike to keep you panicked and make you do things right now or else Big Scary Things! (That and baffling you with a concern or process you don't understand, and Consequences.)

I cannot speak for all situations of course but in general for everyday life, there is very, very little that you might possibly be contacted by your bank, the IRS (! they are not fast, y'all; also they don't call), or many offices of US government that you have to do right now right right now or else!

(I do have to scramble for government junk sometimes relating to disability, but it still comes by mail, it just comes weeks late, because ~government~. I digress. I also know those things are legit because they are routine in my life.)

The one time I actually got a call from my bank about a potential issue I didn't pick it up (because I thought it might be spam), and when I listened to the message I didn't call the number they left (because I thought it might be a scam). I called the bank's main office, told them I had a message from x department about y, could he transfer me so I could be sure I was speaking to the right person?

He was cheerfully happy to assure me he'd get me to the right place, transfer me, and I spoke to, it turned out, the same man who had left the message, who was nothing but happy I'd called back to resolve the (minor) issue. (And later, because I spoke with him a couple times - I took his direct number after that - when it came up and I mentioned why I'd called the main office to get in touch with him, he was glad to hear I'd been aware of the possibility and been cautious. They know those things are out there and they don't want you to get caught in them either!)

But you don't have to say why or that you did either, you don't have to explain at all or if you're more comfortable with an excuse you can say the name/number wasn't clear on the message you received but you may need to speak to someone about x.

Any LEGIT organization will be happy to give you their number and a contact name (may not be the person who's calling) that you can call back later.

Even if it's a very very urgent situation - legitimate, real organizations understand things like "I very much want to get this resolved but um I am literally in a bathtub right now so I will need a few minutes to get out, get dry, get to my wallet," etc. They also understand "I am driving; cannot answer you in detail; please call back or leave me your number so I can call you back in an hour."

Legit orgs do not call you about ANYTHING that needs resolution in less than an hour, short of "actually your building is on fire." (And in that case: They will attempt to provide verification. AND THEY WILL HAVE A NUMBER FOR YOU TO CALL BACK because they know that people get scam calls. (Note: "You need to evacuate immediately because of gas leak/fire/flood that's about to reach the power line" etc. warnings will NOT be asking you for personal info or money.)

Government orgs will give you the name and/or ID number of the person who called. They will not be reticent about it, either: They are calling you from their Legit Real Job about Legit Real Government Business and they do not care if you know their name. Their boss maybe recording everything they do; they don't give a fuck if you are also collecting details about them.

Scams are counting on you panicking because they tell you something is urgent. All actual financial "emergencies" come with warnings, letters (not phone calls) as first contact attempts, and a way to contact them back to work on the details.
