its crazy how people deny the 10th Doctor’s shitty treatment of Martha was at least partially the result of anit-Black writing and misogynoir!! they’ll literally be like “no it wasn’t racism uwu he was just sad about Rose” my sibling in christ, even if that were the sole reason for the 10th Doctor behaving the way he did, that is still NOT any kind of reason enough to treat another person like that. “i am sad about my ex so i am literally going constantly compare you to her to your face and insult you by saying you’re not as good as her and yell at you for even trying to ask me about it” IS straight up insanely boarderline abusive behaviour that isn’t excuseable. and for y’all to pretend this was not at least escalated by Martha being Black is utter lunacy. ESPECIALLY when you saw how the 10th Doctor treated Donna in the special BEFORE he met Martha and he treated her with NOWHERE NEAR with the same level of vitriol. he even asks Donna to travel with him straight away. He kept “just one trip and that’s it”-ing Martha and he didn’t even give martha a TARDIS key until episode 8 of THE SEASON WHERE SHE WAS THE COMPANION. the only GLARING difference between Donna and Martha IS their race. again, the way Martha was written compared to the other companions of that era was very clearly racialised and this includes the Doctor being mad at her for [checks notes] not being Rose which is NOT SOMETHING HE DID WITH ANYONE ELSE. it’s a very clear and obvious to anyone, especially Black folks and poc, that RTD had an unconscious double standard in the way he wrote Black companions and I am so TIRED of people trying to justify the 10th Doctor treating Black people (i.e. Mickey as well) like shit “because of Rose” as if that’s even a fucking decent argument to make.

Normally I leave these kinds of posts alone because they’re not for me but this feels more like an anit-rose post than an anti-racism post. I mean your tag is -#rose tyler fans have some brain rot- so let’s talk about it.

  • I’ve been on tumblr in the Doctor Who, more specifically the Doctor/Rose fandom, for ten years and I’ve not ever seen a person who hasn’t talked about how much of a dick Ten is to Martha. Not even just Martha, Ten was a dick to a lot of people including Rose. It’s talked about a lot.

  • It “constantly” did not happen. He mentioned her by name what 3 times maybe? First in Smith and Jones where he said he was with and lost Rose, and then very clearly explained that Martha was not replacing Rose and to please stop flirting with him. Then he mentioned Rose in the Shakespeare Code and yes he slightly compared them and it was insensitive but he knew Martha for not even 24 hours at the time and he really shouldn’t have had to tip toe around her. All of which you can see my thoughts on here (x). Then he took her to New Earth, a place he had visited with Rose already. Then Jack brought her up, which I’m guessing is the time you said he “yelled at her”..? He yelled at both her and Jack for gossiping about his love life. If mentioning Rose a few times is “borderline abusive behavior” then you can say Martha borderline sexually harassed Ten... Martha: You're the one that kissed me. The Doctor: That was a genetic transfer! Martha: And if you will wear a tight suit. The Doctor: Now, don't! Martha: And then travel all the way across the universe just to ask me on a date. The Doctor: Stop it. He said he wasn’t interested and Martha continued to be jealous and mopey about his refusal. That’s not Ten’s fault.

  • When Ten brought up Rose to Donna, she responded with compassion and kindness. When Ten brought up Rose to Martha, she responded with “you kissed me”, flirting, and jealousy.

  • No. Donna was older, had no job, had just experienced heartbreak like him, wanted to travel, had no family obligations, wasn’t trying to get in his pants. Martha was in training for a very serious and tough job, had family obligations, was trying to get in his pants even after he said to “stop it”.

  • I believe the very first thing Mickey said to the Doctor was “Don’t. He’s an alien. He’s a thing.” If some dude who I just rescued called me a “thing” I’d probably be a dick to him too.

I am white so I know my opinion doesn’t matter but in my opinion every scene you mentioned was a stretch for racism. If you wanted to talk about the racist writing you could have mentioned how Martha’s family was literally enslaved and forced to work for someone named the Master, or how her feeling worried, uncomfortable, and unsafe in certain time periods was completely disregarded by the Doctor, or how she married the one other black side character (although even this is a stretch since she was also engaged to a white dude, and it makes 100% sense that she’d bond with Mickey over their rare shared experiences).

If you want to call me racists for disagreeing with OP then that’s fine because I’ll just blame it on all that brain rot I got for liking Rose Tyler. 🧠👎🏻

I’ll be one of the first to agree that Ten can be a real dick but in the case of not catering to Martha’s feelings for him I don’t think he is at all. The above gifs are how he responds to Martha flirting with him. He tells her straight up about Rose, and how she isn’t a replacement. He makes it very clear that he doesn’t want her flirting with him. Especially in that last gif! He holds eye contact, leans right into her face, and gives a very firm ‘stop it!’. Most of the tags in this post are about how awful ppl think Ten is because they think he’s not valuing Martha. They go right from the above scene to Shakespeare and sharing a bed. It’s been what? Maybe a couple of hours since Ten basically said ‘it’s not gonna happen lady!’ but ppl are calling him a dick because he mentioned Rose with Martha right there? They haven’t even known each for 24 hours but he’s supposed to pack his pain away and make sure she feels important to him at all times? Yes, he can be an insensitive, jackass, flirty slut but I’m on his side with this one. If anything Martha is the dick for not recognizing her new friend is in pain and instead just focuses on her own feelings of wanting him to like her. Yes, Ten said Rose was safe and with her family but clearly he’s upset. Donna noticed it immediately but Martha just wants to bone. If roles were reversed, and it was a woman who gave that firm of a ‘stop it!’ to a man, we’d be calling the guy a stalking pervert if he kept at it. This isn’t a critique on Martha as a whole. She’s fine, but he never gave her a reason to think he wanted her as more than a companion ever. I just don’t think Ten was in the wrong for not tiptoeing around her crush on him.
