This Mount Doom looking volcano is called Puyehue and is situated near Osorno in southern Chile. This magnificent eruption occurred in June 2011, causing 3,500 people to evacuate the area. After being dormant for over half a century, geologists suggest that the eruption was prompted by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake that shook Chile the previous year. The earthquake caused a fault system 500 km to slip by a few metres at a depth of 20-30 km below. It is speculated that this movement cause the magma chamber to become compressed, making an eruption imminent. As you can tell from the image, the cloud of ash that resulted from the eruption was massive, around 10km high and 5km wide. -Jean Image: CLAUDIO SANTANA/AFP/Getty Images
