An exercise in light painting and parallax displacement to create the illusion of 3D (or 2.5D) and motion in a series of still photographs captured after nightfall.
This film is comprised entirely of still images. All motion achieved in post production. The only time lapse shots are the star trails. All other shots are typically comprised of between 3 and 5 exposures of the same subject, but with different lighting in each, then blended together or transitioned between to give the effect of seamless motion.

“For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.” – Vincent Van Gogh
This is a highlight reel of my favorite nightscape timelapse scenes from the past 2-3 years, mostly from southern Utah. There are scenes from Zion, Bryce Canyon, Capitol Reef, Death Valley, Canyonlands, Glacier, Grand Staircase-Escalante, and other areas.
I’ve enjoyed thinking back to each of these experiences. Typically when I shoot an astrolapse I’m aiming for ~300 exposures, which will give me 10 seconds of video at 30 fps. With each exposure usually at ~25 seconds, I’m often hanging out under the stars for 2-2.5 hours with nothing to do while the camera is running.
It was spooky at first being alone out in the remote desert, but it’s become one of my favorite grounding experiences. Gazing up at an amazing starfield. Silence except for the camera shutter slowly clicking. Meditating. Taking it all in until the boundaries between myself and everything else start to dissolve.
“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.” ― Marcus Aurelius

A quick weekend trip out to a place of meditation and awe. The landscape and the peace that is felt there is unparalleled. If you ever have a moment, to just experience nature in it's most raw form, go and do it. Grateful for @loivophoto for planning the trip, and catching some great shots.

COLORFUL CANYONS
Photographed and produced 2014-2018, this 5 minute short film will take you to the wilderness of Western USA, mainly in Utah, with some clips from Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada.
You will see canyons with vivid colors, impressive geological features, and eroded layers of rock revealing 1,8 billion years of Earth's history.
