This is the blog homepage of the Facebook group "The Earth Story" (Click here to visit our Facebook group). “The Earth Story” are group of volunteers with backgrounds throughout the Earth Sciences. We cover all Earth sciences - oceanography, climatology, geology, geophysics and much, much more. Our articles combine the latest research, stunning photography, and basic knowledge of geosciences, and are written for everyone!
We hope you find us to be a unique home for learning about the Earth sciences, and we hope you enjoy!

In 2016 an exciting mission was ended. The Rosetta spacecraft made its final manouver. A controlled hard-landing on the comet Tschurjumow-Gerassimenko (67p). Before that Rosetta accompanied the Comet for more then 2 years. It researched valuable scientific data, brought a lander on to the comets surface and took a vast number of pictures. 2017 Esa released over 400000 images from Rosettas comet mission. Based on these material Motion Designer Christian Stangl and Composer Wolfgang Stangl worked together to create this shortfilm. The sequences are digitally enhanced real-footage from the probe.
Watch the beauty of an active alien body, far out in the dephts of our solar system.

Philae

The island of Philae was originally a nearly-permanent island within the Nile River in Egypt. In long, meandering rivers, islands occasionally form inside the rive from carried by the waters. These islands are long-lived but not truly permanent; the waters will split around them during normal flow, but during occasional hundred or thousand year floods the waters could cover an island and can erode or even destroy it.

This was the origin of the island Philae. It sat in the middle of the Nile River, surrounded by its waters on both sides. The island became the home of one of the Egyptian civilization’s most amazing temples, the Temple of Isis.

In the 1960s, the Aswan High Dam was built on the Nile River, creating Lake Nasser and providing energy and stable water flow to the nation of Egypt. The creation of this lake flooded much of the island of Philae. Some of the remnants of the temple were moved to higher ground before the construction of the dam. These photos reflect how it appears today, with some portion of the island flooded but some parts still in tact.

The island of Philae recently gave its name to the spacecraft built by the European Space Agency that dropped onto the surface of a comet from the Rosetta Spacecraft. The craft was named after the Rosetta stone that originally allowed translation between the ancient Egyptian Language and Greek. The island of Philae hosted an additional obelisk with the same setup –hosting Egyptian hieroglyphs and a translation into Greek.

The Rosetta spacecraft was named in the hopes that its data would allow humanity to translate some of the history of Earth as comets may have been part of the solar system soup combined together to form the planet we see today.

Hi Philae!

In November of 2014, the European Space Agency’s Rosetta Spacecraft dropped a washing machine sized box containing scientific instruments onto the surface of comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The systems designed to lock the lander in place didn’t fire, and so the lander – named Philae, bounced across the comet’s surface and came to rest in the shadow of a large surface obstacle.

The lander had enough power for a few days, but since it was in the shadow it slowly shut down after returning basic data on its environment. It briefly made contact with the orbiting Rosetta spacecraft earlier this summer when the comet was closest to the sun (that would help the lander’s solar panels receive more energy), but it never received enough to activate it.

This morning, the ESA published this series of images from Rosetta’s OSIRIS camera, taken during a close pass at the comet. In the lower right frame, the Philae lander was spotted leaning against a cliff. A small red dot in the upper right frame marks the location of this shot.

Finding the lander will allow scientists to use the data returned from Philae more appropriately, since they now know where on the comet their measurements came from and can compare what Philae saw in that spot to what the Rosetta spacecraft measured before and after.

Tonight, let's share a few videos showing the details of the Rosetta mission and how we got to the point where we are today, with a  lander on the surface of the comet, after more than 10 years in space, 3 rendezvous with Earth, a rendezvous with Mars, and finally a rendezvous with the comet 67P Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

This video tracks the spacecraft's path around the sun. More later.

The European Space Agency's Rosetta mission just dropped a lander onto a comet and it successfully harpooned and anchored itself to the comet. This is an image of the lander, known as Philae, imaged from the main spacecraft that dropped it.

Anxiously awaiting photos from the lander. Follow https://twitter.com/isuniverse and https://twitter.com/theearthstory for live updates. I'll post an image if available once I get back from teaching.
