The Earth Story

@earthstory / earthstory.tumblr.com

This is the blog homepage of the Facebook group "The Earth Story" (Click here to visit our Facebook group). “The Earth Story” are group of volunteers with backgrounds throughout the Earth Sciences. We cover all Earth sciences - oceanography, climatology, geology, geophysics and much, much more. Our articles combine the latest research, stunning photography, and basic knowledge of geosciences, and are written for everyone!
We hope you find us to be a unique home for learning about the Earth sciences, and we hope you enjoy!

Original caption: "Almost three weeks of non-stop shooting, 150 Gb of videos & raw image files along with 50 GB of rendered video files to combine into this piece.
The time lapse was shot across North Pacific Ocean & East China Sea. The time lapse was taken over span of 20 days experiencing mesmerizing shades of Nature . *Note* The narrative of the time lapse is not linear . I purposefully reshuffled some of the shots to give it a Cinematic look."

Savage 10 metre fish of the Silurian and Devonian Heavily armoured piscine torpedoes with fierce teeth roamed the oceans in the early days of fishes, in fact the Devonian era is called the age of fishes by palaeontologists as they had a huge burst of speciation and diversified to fill most marine ecological niches during this time. The now extinct (fortunately) class known as placodermi (plate skin in Greek) was the apex predator of these long gone waters, and thrived from 438 to 358 million years ago, dying out at the end Devonian mass extinction (one of the lesser ones).

Captured overlooking the cliffs in Látrabjarg, this fog waterfall in Iceland is pretty spectacular, but unfortunately not something you can go view at any time. A hiker was fortunate enough to capture images of this natural phenomena where cold fog came into contact with warmer air causing it to cascade down to sea level. The fog not only looked like an enormous waterfall, but thanks to the roar of the wind sounded like one too. Video here: https://youtu.be/OnQiZBMaXG8 Image courtesy of Reginald Schmidt via r/videos

Caledonian folding Back in the early Cambrian some 500 million years ago, the continental dance had an active phase that resulted in the assembling of many of the plate fragments that form the bedrock beneath the European continent. Chunks of rock that were joined then that have stayed together through the vagaries of supercontinental gathering (the formation of Pangaea, completed some 300 million years back) and dispersal. There were two main landmasses in those days, known as Gondwana and Laurentia (for a piece on the formation of Gondwana see http://on.fb.me/1D548m8).

Live to Sea - A saga that follows Freddie Meadows on his tireless quest along the rugged edges of Sweden, in search of the region’s greatest waves; one of the final frontiers within surfing. "This journey has been long and beautiful. A journey that I feel in many ways has just begun; the majority of which remains undocumented due to the mystical nature and spontaneity of the Baltic Sea. It was early autumn of 2019, I was anchored behind an island when the name Live to Sea came to mind. It was the perfect description of what I do, of what all of us surfers do in some way. Live to Sea is for anyone and everyone who feels connected to the ocean, sea or any waters. For me this film is a tribute to the missions and moments that went unseen. Most importantly it is a tribute to the magic of nature and the sea. " - Freddie Meadowslivetosea.org Today The Baltic Sea is in critical condition.- it is considered one of the most polluted seas in the world.It can still be saved but actions should be taken immediately.Do you want to help? Coralline landscapes Corals are a symbiosis (an ecological relationship in which two or more species cooperate and live together to their mutual benefit) between polyps and algae. The polyps build the structures and hunt microorganisms, providing a home for the algae that contribute energy via photosynthesis. The resulting landscapes in macro are simply amazing. Sadly corals all over the world are under threat from human activities such as fishing, ocean warming due to climate change and increased acidification of the seawater due to the rise in dissolved CO2, and several major coral bleaching events in recent years have put reefs under stress worldwide. Tidally dominated deltas This is a satellite photo of part of the Gulf of Papua captured by the USGS Landsat program in 1989. It shows two major river deltas – the large river on the western side is the Fly River and the river that splits into many channels in the center of the image is the Kikori River. Several other smaller stream channels sit in-between these two larger features.

The End-Triassic Mass Extinction Since the start of life with hard parts, there are 5 known major “mass extinctions” where large fractions of the species and higher order taxa on this planet went extinct in short order. Two of these are fairly well understood – the Cretaceous/Paleogene mass extinction was triggered by an asteroid impact, and the Permian/Triassic mass extinction was triggered by events occurring during gigantic volcanic eruptions in modern-day Siberia. The extinction in-between those events, at the boundary between the Triassic and Jurassic, is less well understood.
